  1. consciousness from chaos comes from an intellectual attachment to the universe being strictly material (and completely explainable through precise language), as if everything unknown is actually knowable or as-yet-unknown. leave a little room for mystery is all i'm saying

  2. glad people are questioning the calorie on Why the Calorie Is Broken (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 1

the calorie is a gross rule of thumb at best. it doesn't account for any cycles in the body, insulin/leptin responses, digestion/processing time, how a person feels, or many other important factors. sure it's correct when you compare 300 vs 5000 calories in one day, but saying (almost) every adult should eat eg 2000 calories a day, every day, is a horrible disservice. our lifestyle (busyness, stress/anxiety, overscheduled eating, hurried/scant social connection) is more of a factor in obesity and disease than our number of calories.

  3. Beliefs on Math Says Conspiracies Are Prone To Unravel (bbc.com) · · Score: 1

Each person views and understands the world based on their own beliefs (personal truths). In my case for example, while I understand that there's lots of evidence suggesting it, I don't believe there was a big bang. I also believe the CDC covered up research findings about vaccines (but I don't know the details). I also believe the wealthiest people in the world aren't on the Forbes list. Is the moon landing fake? Probably not, but the video sure seems to be. But it would be arrogant of me to tell you that I'm absolutely right and you're not. It would also be foolish, because you view the world through the prism of your beliefs, too.

It's open-minded to understand that language is imperfect, and perspective is always biased, too. Know-it-all-ness is a very adolescent trait. (Yes, that is a demeaning remark. Don't take it personally.) Be kind, and more importantly, be humble, because whether you're right or wrong, life is a gift meant to be enjoyed.

I'll end the newage hippie woowoo here. Peace

"Values, life meanings, purposes, and qualities slip through science like a sea slips through the nets of fishermen. Yet man swims in this sea, so he cannot exclude it from his purview. This is what was meant when we noted earlier that a scientific world view is in principle impossible. Taken in its entirety, the world is not as science says it is; it is as science, philosophy, religion, the arts, and everyday speech say it is. Not science but the sum of man's symbol systems, of which science is but one, is the measure of things.

With science itself, there can be no quarrel. Scientism is another matter. Whereas science is positive, contenting itself with reporting what it discovers, scientism is negative. It goes beyond the actual findings of science to deny that other approaches to knowledge are valid and other truths true. In doing so it deserts science in favor of metaphysics-- bad metaphysics as it happens, for as contention that there are no truths save those of science is not itself a scientific truth, in affirming it scientism contradicts itself. It also carries marks of a religion-- a secular religion, resulting from overextrapolation from science, that has seldom numbered great scientists among its votaries."
