The good thing is that you dont actually need to test the time machine, just build it and say ok, this time tomorrow we will be sending back this apple a whole day...
and you just sit and wait for an apple to appear out of thin air:)...
hmmm and you grab that apple and send it back tomorrow... and you NEVER needed to buy that apple !!!
All they said is that is not their ball park, that means, that its not a food, or drug, or medical procedure, or herb... duh! Its a chip, and it does nothing to your body. (tho we COULD argue that having a radio emitter stuck inside our bodies could increase cancer odds)
So far all they said was if they want to sell it the FDA woldn't bother them. And its a voluntary thing, hell you even have to pay to have it installed, i can imagine a load of things i rather spend $200 on !!!
I guess that when these are mandatory in the us its going to be a sad day for all americans, anonimity down the drain, for good, for life.
I dont think that any good that these might do outweigh that simple fact.
I wonder if a stronng, but small, localized EMP would shut it down... or at least erase the volatile info (medical records, id, etc)...
blah... sometimes i feel that techonolgy sucks, and i have a quad xeon server in my bedroom...
Actually all this really is is an extension of the digital signature. I mean, if you recieve an encrypted, digitally signed email as a subpoena the email itself should be a valid legal document. The problem will reside in proving that you got the email and that you read it.
I guess only that you got it... cos it could be alleged that the receipt of a signed email with a subject such as court subpoena, case #.... and NOT opening it to read the details is just as bad as getting the note in person and not bothering to read it to know where and when you are supposed to show up in court.
So only a DELIVERY receipt is needed and not a READ one... granted not all MX send deliveries... but the implementation can't be all that hard.
I know not all problems are solved with this(i've email accts i barely check once every couple of months, just to keep them active) but i see it as a step in the rite direction towards speeding as simplifying the exchange of legal docs.
Yes, exactly this is the case with consultants, big firms dont even add a door to a building without a consulting company coming in. And it is also a case of liabilities.
Just as with the DB, if things run smoothly then everything is ok... but if for some reason it collapses (or the door gets jammed) you better have someone large behind you to lay the blame. (well, we hired Accenture, and they are the best, and they said a door there was a great idea, hell they studied it for 6 months!!)
I dont think that any large companies can use them. The use of free (as in beer) appz looks bad on sharehodlers.
Plus, senior IT execs need reliable support and assurance that they got the best software in the market for the job, just in case things go wrong. Its a liabilities thing
Short on technical data ? try non-existing techincal data, unless you count using treads there was absolutely NO description of anything in these babies.
It would be good for rescue operations (not for body-search ones) if the robots were equipped with a speaker/mic besides the teleprescence equipment. This way, if they found somebody alive the ppl topside could comunicate with them.
Give them some hope.
Are this things tethered ? or wireless ? the article shows that small tracked one without any cables sticking out, but its not operating. Cos I guess all the steel and iron would fuck up wireless comms its not like line-of-sight or some office walls between the robots and the operator. And a very powerfull tx/rx module would require a lot of juice.

I never saw a place that sold ready made beowulfs... i think you need to "assemble them" yourself.
And if u can manage that in two hours you should come work for us !

Ok its BETTER than Sega's idea, but obly becasue the GBA is in color and more usable... but the mini game idea was Sega's (unless they ripped it off someone else that is:)

He might have been all that... but as to YAY ! i'd wait and see if you end up with the aussie equivalent of Network Solutions.
Companies can be MUCH worse than a single human could possible be (well, maybe not in M$'s case...), i think that was the reason they were invented in the first place:)
DivX decoding is fairly proc-intensive, the most important point in proof here beign that the Dreamcast, which has a powerfull graphics chip, but a mediocre cpu (by pc standards) cant play DivX.
And this got me thinking on another thing that goes completely unsaid. What about the AUDIO for that full-screen video.
DivX usually uses stereo mp3 @ 128kbps, and we ALL (well, some) know that 128kbps 44.100Khz Stero is 15kb/s of data. And the acceptabiliy bar to have passable soundtrack is at 96kbps 44.1kHz St and THAT is 11kb/s...
I HIGHLY doubt that these guys found a more efficient audio codec (dont bring up OGG and the like, the compression gain is not THAT significant) so we get only about 17kb/s full-screen video with passable audio (or 22kb/s if sound is mono, but mono sound sucks)
So we are back to the original thought, this has got to be a better zooming process for small images, together with a good video codec (maybe even a DivX one) and crappy sound.
Yes but the article is extremely short on technical data.
What is this FULL-SCREEN video ?? 320x200 ? 640x480 ? true NTSC @ 29.97 FPS ? DVD resolution ? HDTV ?
Or is it 1/4 tv resolution zoomed to fit the screen ? with 1/2 the fps ?
Maybe all they did was improove the zoom, iterpolation and anti-aliasing algorithms in the player. So they send a crappy video and it ends up looking ok.
Anyway its all hot air until we get some technical data.

All they know is, WHAT ??? the mission critical software of that firm is free ??
Most people asociate free with cheap or crappy. Not serious OSs and appz
Sad, stupid, narrowminded, whatever you wish to call it

So there would be no need to compare time from point a to b. The sat does that for you. So they coud INSTANTLY know if your're speeding.
Hell, they could even SMS you your ticket. And charge the fine to your phone bill.
:)
OR your wife could use the GPS in your phone to verify that you ARE working late in your office and not someplace else.
OR your boss to check you are sick at home and not at the beach.
That is the best thing about technology, the possibilities to get screwed with it are endless.

"If you can't improve the silence, don't speak."
Its only the PCB.
I too own a LD player and it would be awesome to hook it up and play.
But i cant recall now if it reads CDRs or not. That would seriously complicate the use of warezd roms.
And getting the real thing should be close to impossible.

These two places make and sell Clusters

err so ... i like NTSC for action parts and PAL for pausing :)

And yes, as the frame-size for PAL is larger than NTSC's the bitrate is the same
And that leads to the neverending discussion of which standard is better.(hehe notice how that discussion never includes SECAM, poor french)

Two-fold congratulations !
a) First thread i saw without the idiotic FIRST-POST
b) And an excellent one (err, two?) word summary of the game
