  1. Selective quoting? on Another Study Decries Violent Games · · Score: 4, Insightful

The article then gets a little preachy. From the article: [snip] Numerous behavioral and cognitive studies have linked exposure to violent media and aggressive behavior.
There isn't anything preachy about that, it's stating a fact. Apparently, numerous studies have reached that conclusion. The very next line says something important that probably shouldn't be overlooked..

Now, researchers are using advanced imaging technology to scan the brain for clues to whether violent video games cause increases in aggression. They aren't saying that violent video games cause increased aggression, they're just saying that there is a link. One shouldn't think that they are making the mistake of assuming that correlation implies causation, they're simply saying that they see a link, and now they're investigating it. Proving causation is no easy task, there are pleny of reasons why two variables may be related. For instance, perhaps people who have "increased activity in areas of the brain linked to emotional arousal" are more likely to play violent video games because that "increased activity" makes them more interested in such games.

    From the wikipedia entry:

Homer: Not a bear in sight. The "Bear Patrol" is working like a charm!
    Lisa: That's specious reasoning, Dad.
    Homer: Thanks, honey.
Lisa: By your logic, I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away.
Homer: Hmm. How does it work?
Lisa: It doesn't work. It's just a stupid rock!
    Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: But I don't see any tigers around, do you?
Homer: Lisa, I want to buy your rock.

Don't listen to the jerks making stupid comments about why you suck and telling you how you should have done x, y, z. Remember, these are the same people that cause the first "But will it run Linux?" comment to be modded +5 everytime new hardware is discussed. But, now that you've actually shown it running linux (Sony said it could before, but I doubt many, if any, people had seen evidence), they are treating you like crap. Everyone can criticize (and most do), but they're not rushing out to buy a PS3 and do it themselves, or offer any useful advice (with a few exceptions). Instead, they're laughing at "teh stupid sony fanboi linux noob" who said "compile" instead of "boot." I would say, try not to let them get to you, you can't make everyone happy (especially here), and for what it's worth, I think it was pretty cool that you spent the time and effort to get it to run, especially considering you are not an expert (I am a linux noob myself). As for the comments about your ebay auction, I know exactly where you are coming from. I thought a PS3 would be cool, but I figured I'd wait until the price came down (and MGS 4 came out) before I picked on up. But, after seeing the prices people were getting on ebay, I had serious doubts as to whether or not I had missed an incredible opportunity. The $4000-$5000 profit is a month and a half of my salary, and knowing that I could have earned that in a few days.. Well, you bet your ass my PS3 would be on ebay right now too. I figure, the way you thought (and the way I would have thought too) was, "Well, I want this PS3, and it is really cool, but I'd have to be stupid to pass up earning this $4000 for 1 honest day's work."

To reiterate, don't let some people here ruin slashdot for you, there are some very useful stories/discussions and I usually learn a thing or two reading them each day (at the very least, I laugh my ass off thanks to the various smart-aleck members and his/her comments (stupid me, this is slashdot, they're all "his" comments)).

Take a look at some of the discussions surrounding NewYorkCountryLawyer, especially this one. This guy is a lawyer who is fighting for something that 99% of slashdot readers agree with, and he takes time out of his busy schedule to talk to us, answer our questions, and keep us informed about the RIAA. And we treat him like crap. Reading those discussions, you'd think slashdot was "news for lawyers", because everyone and his brother thinks they know more than an ACTUAL lawyer. There are plenty of experts who post to slashdot, and even more non-experts who think they know better. Try not to let the vocal minority get to you, Linus Torvalds himself could post to slashdot and there would be "slashvertisment" tags to his story and users who claimed to understand the Linux kernal better than he. Don't let the things people here get to you (especially not in real life). I think what you did was pretty cool, and the important thing is that you thought it was cool. I too would have figured that the slashdot crowd would have appreciated what you did, it's a shame that some of the loudest voices didn't.

Take care, I hope you have a nice night.

I don't know if you realized this when you did your calculations, but refining results in slightly less than 50% yield for gasoline from a barrel of oil (according to the U.S. Department of Energy). So it's possible that we'd be left with less than 1500 'tankfuls' of gasoline, although we'd still have the 600 barrels per person.

I think it is because Microsoft is trying to make money. The portable music business is worth millions upon millions. Same goes for the video game industry. Furthermore, the big companies in those industries can increase their market share in different industries because of the brand association that they get from their product (iPod, PS2, etc). Look at how many people argue that iPods have caused a surge in Mac sales. If Microsoft can take significant marketshare from Apple's iPod, they will be hurting their competition in the OS industry as well. Microsoft has the deep pockets that enable them to take risks like this to hurt their competitors. If they can destroy Apple's music industry, and Sony's media industry, it won't really be a waste of resources, will it?

I too am having this problem, and I suspect everyone else is, but hasn't noticed or doesn't care. What's really fun is that if this is fixed soon, all of the redundant comments will show up and be moderated down (I posted the same CNN link that you posted LiquidCooled in response to the Vista RTM because I didn't realize that you'd posted it 10 minutes before I did). Bring on the negative moderation! I don't see how this is trolling (although offtopic and redundant do apply).. It should at least be left in the top level for people to see.

Considering that PS3 seems to consume massive amounts of electricity and already has reports of overheating, I don't think it would be an ideal webserver. Considering it "consumes much more power than a top-end PC gaming rig" I can't imagine it is better than a traditional server as far as price/watt is concerned, it was built as a gaming platform, not a webserver. Furthermore, a machine which already has reports about overheating might not make the most reliable webserver.

While their punishment did not come from a court, it was deinitely 'inconvenient'. I don't think many people would be too happy if they were banned from their network while at college (even if they had done something illegal).
