A retail system doesn't work well. Here is why. Lets say an individual needs $20,000 (arbitrary number but close) to pay what most would consider basic needs. Let us say he or she makes, say $30,000. The remain $10,000 is put into savings. (I don't think saving 1/3 of your income is reasonable but whatever). So $20,000 or 2/3 of his or her income is spent on things that would generally be hit by a retail tax. Food/electricity/transportation/etc.

Now lets take someone who makes $300,000. They also need about $20,000 for basic needs but let us assume their wealth makes them more prone to purchase things, so lets say they spend $100,000 (5 times the less wealthy individual) and save $200,000.

The effective tax rate for someone making $30k is 60% and the tax rate for some one earning $300k is 30%. Seems backwards to me. The wealthly do buy lots of things (and would be hit by a retail tax) but they don't buy more as a percentage of income. They have a tendency to invest. Which is good but doesn't negate the fact that they would be pay less taxes (again as a percentage, which really is the way we should be, and hopefully are, thinking about tax rates).

Why do kids like violent games and games with sex* in them? I would say because a group of knowledgeable and attentive designers, marketers, artist, etc. primary goal is to design a video game that children will enjoy. Don't underestimate this. There are basic reactions that human beings can be depended to respond to. The goal of a game design team is to have an individual, from a targeted demographic (young males, generally but increasingly young women) greatly enjoy a game, usually expressed by hours and days of game play, and recommend that game to others. That as well as buying the sequel.

But so what? Show me that violent video games make violent children. Recently a report on NPR or the BBC described a group of kids who were given a competitive game to play together. The researches recorded which children were more violent prone as well as there level of violence. Then the kids were given some "violent" video games to play. Lastly, they played another competitive group game. No change. The non-violent kids remained non-violent and the violent kids maintained the same level of violence. Maybe long term game play effects a tendency towards violence. I doubt it. More likely some people like violent video games and most violent people like violent video games.

First McDonalds kept their coffee that hot (180 degrees) because it stays fresher longer. They had received dozens of complaints about serious burns and ignored them. They figured the money they saved on coffee was worth more then the hazard hot coffee posed (3 degree burns in 3-7 seconds -- try to get out of a car and take off you pants in 3-7 seconds as your groin is being charred).

So basically McDonalds did a cost/benefit calculation and figured profits were more important than inflicting serious wounds. And let me make a point, people spill food and drinks on themselves, it happens all the time and places that serve millions of people a year should probably take that into account. Don't try the gun/smoking analogy. Firstly analogies are logical fallacies, they illustrate but do not prove a point and second, at least nowadays, people realize that smoking and guns are dangerous. When I get a slushy I don't expect it to dissolve the lining of my stomach, just as one would not expect a cup of coffee to cause 3rd degree burns.

The original amount she received was one days PROFIT from McDonalds COFFEE sales. Millions of dollars. It was a punitive judgement, as in "you put profits before the health of your customers". She got it because she stepped forward when others didn't. She lost all of it on appeal except for lawyer's fee's and medical bills.
