Every commercial airline pilot i have ever met was an ex air-force pilot. (In the USe abotu the only way to learn to fly jhets is to join the US Airforce.)
Given that, I would think they have training on the proper handling of a side arm. Maybe its time to arm them all.

Read the news. There were 4 planes downed. Only 3 of them went into buildings. Of the 3 that went into buildings only two hit at a height, the pentagon one hit at basicly ground level.
Its amazing what dumb luck can do. There are documented cases of people falling out of airplanes (at flyign altitude) and walking away with no more then severe bruises. I wouldnt want to bet my life on it but it does sometiems happen.
That may seem callous and devoid of feeling for the "innocents" of those countries but innocents are ALWAYS among the first victims of wars between countries and in sheltering those who would attack us IMO those countries DO wage war against us.
As we deal with this day of horror and shock, we will want to act. Those who cannot understand that an American of Arabian descent is as much an American as one of western european descent may feel the urge to lash out at their fellow americans.
Don't.
The innocent hurt and dead are hurt and ead and nothing can undo that. Creating more innocent victims does nothing but make this act of terrorism all the more successful. I've known many Muslims in my time and they were all kind, sweet, gentle people. Holding them to blame for an act like this woudl be akin to holding all christians to blame for the nbuts who shoot doctors in the name of "christianity."
People are likening this to Perl Harbor. In the wake of Perl Harbor we as a society comitted one of the greatest organized crimed against americans ever comitted-- sending japanese americans to internment camps. Lets prove we are better then those that came before or us or at elast have learend from their mistakes. Our enemies are OUTSIDE this country, not within it.
George Lucas has had a project for awhile to create educational games. Driodworks coems to mind, there may be others.
For (generally) non-violent, mind strethcing recreation, i'd also look at some of the adventure games. Escape from Monkey island is a fun new one. Some of the older ones like Day of the Tentacle or Sam and Max are still lots of fun too.
bfore you start panicking find out who your network-layer provider really is.
IUn my case its AT&T through TCI, which they bought.
Even if @Home goes under I strongly suspect AT&T will contiue to offer my cable modem and just switch toa different ISP servcies provider.
BTW a few more comments:
(1) I've had an AT&T @Hoem mdoem for a few yearsnow and generally found it highly reliable. Its porbably area dependant but in my area its MUCh more reliable then the IDSl we had efor awhile.
(2) I have some pity/sympathy for @Home. They invested TONS fo money in the infrastructure for Cable modem long before anyone knew it would be successful. Inre turn for this early invetment they acquired lock-ind eals with the various low level carriers like TCI to be the onew ISp provider on their lines.
Flash foward 3 years or so, cable mdoem is finally taking off and AOL and some other big ISPs go whining to the FCC that NOW they want in on cable modems, without having made the risky upfront investment to get it all started. The FCC caves and takes @Home's bought and paid for market advanatge away.
This was BAD call of the FCC. They really shoudl have at elast given @Home a 5 year period or so onc the amrekt cae alive to establish themselves before makign trhem open the mqrket up to agressive compettitors like AOL and MSN.
I know I'd think twice about ivnesting early in a new medium, based on what happened here.
For the past few generations Nvidia and MS have colluded to make sure that DX supprots the latest whiz bang featrues of NVidia cards.
At Quakecon a few weeks ago John Carmack took Micrsoft to task for putting thinly disguised Nvidia specific operations in DX8.
Fact of the matter though is that NVidia dominates the game-video car space and MS dominates the OS space, and they work togetehr to reinforce that lock.

Explain to me exactly and with what mechanism the JCP "Quashes bug reports?"
The JCP is repsonsible for the spec. The spec by definition has no bugs.
Various vendors license the spec and put out implementations. Each is responsible for ist own bugs.
Now doesn't that make more sense then martians are wathcing through your peephole? If not I have some preforssionals I can recommend to tyou.

Java has had hardware support for Java2D (and thus Swing) since JDK1.3 JDK1.4 brought in VolatileImage which allows full access to the card-resident memory and on-card graphcis ops.

I can confirm that this is what we have been told inside Sun. All our WTC employees got out fine. None of our pentagon employees were hurt.
How about a source?
I work for Sun and have been told by internal mail direct from the execs and our security people that all of our WTC employees got safely out.
Oh and there were only 250 total in the building.
Holding a short position on Sun stock by any chance?
This ocurred to me last night.

Journalism in general is dead.
It was replaced by "entertainment" and "advocacy" a long time asgo.
In an entire 4 year "Journbalism degree" my alma mater had not one section of one course on "Journalism ethics."
Journalism is dead, greed and stupidity killed it. Its enterred a mass grave with such things as "politics" and "community spirit".
So it goes.

JAMID has been favorably compared to Quake2/Unreal by EvilJohn, the organizer of Quakecon. (You can see the comments at javagaming.org).
And it was written in 1 month by 3 guys.
How long did Quake 2 and Unreal take to write in C?
It s a very sophistcated scene graph system which cooks down to display lists for speed... and all that logic is in (very fast) Java.
Which is why it took 3 guys 1 month to write JAMID.
Try doing that in C ontop of OGL.

When i got todesign my cube at one jobn, I covered onen entire cubicle wall with hang-in shelves.

In Java, a well controlled exception.
In C, a core dump.
Since you asked.
