A few years ago, my roommate and I built a credit card reader/copier for under $10. We copied a few metro passes (magnetic strip, no RFID)just to see if it would work, and we learned that it does, but you can't pass the 'same' card through the system 2 times n a row. my friend got the embarasing warning buzzer, and he was the one with the legetimate pass! they accsed us of doing a passback. we just played dumb. "no we didn't! i made a copy of his card! its right here! try it! see! there was no passback!" is a very bad defence.
we only used it once, just to see if it would work, then destroyed it. My advice is: you should be very careful with this kind of stuff. Not only unethical and wrong, it is also illegal.
while file sharing is doing a great deal of harm to the RIAA, they do still act as a filter, keeping some of the crap down, and marketing what is less crappy.
once there is a system set up that lets users filter content that is as effective as the lables, then they will be really screwed.
imagine an i-slashdot-tunes music service where everyone submits their tunes, people listen, rank and rate them.

I believe the reason why people are more concerned with guns than swimming pools is that guns only serve one purpose: killing things
on the other hand, a pool's primary reason for existing is not killing things, they are designed for cooling you down on a hot day, teaching swimming skills, providing low impact exercise, assisting with rehab after injury, and getting sexy women into skimpy swimsuits.
I don't think either should be outlawed either. people should just be smart about it. I have a fence around my yard to keep the little bastards out, I have a gate around my pool as a second line of defense, and a fat/hairy brother who spends all day in there drinking beer and listening to metallica, one sight of that and the kids will likely never return.
The UN and WTO are a bit too socialistic for my tastes, but that's just me. I agree with you completely.

The producer of an item should always make more money than any other person involved in the process that sounds great, and i wish it would work like that, but in reality, nothing I have seen in the creative field works like that.
As a visual artist, I deal with galleries, short term contracts and all that crap that has nothing to do with art quite often.
the standard gallery commission is 50%.
If a painting of mine sells for $1000, I get $500, and they get $500. But, I have to pay for the materials myself, so right there, the gallery is making more than I am off of a sale. Some gallery owners are also cheep bastards that expect me to pay for framing. That can easly cost me $250 each, a huge bite out of my profit. But, they do all the promotionm, advertising, even pay for all the food and drinks during the opening. they are the ones paying rent for the gallery space. they deal with all the sales tax. if they want rid of it, and sell it for 50% less, i get all the profits, they get nothing.
50% is a fair cut to me, I make it, I deliver it, and you do the rest, then mail me the cheque. I do not have a problem with that buisness model. I do not want to deal with ANY of that business stuff, and am glad to have someone else deal with it for me. I am not a salesman, but I realize their importance. a 50/50 split is fair. if the artist wants to keep it all, they had better expect to do the business work themselves.
here is where I get confused: the fine art market is tiny, the music market is huge.
but I get 50% of the final sale price. if an album costs the customer $16, why isn't the artist making $8 from that sale?
The music buisness has far too many middlemen. Trim the fat or die. It's that simple.
i got my copy off of the pirate bay, and burnt it to DVD myself, and I have had no problems at all with playback.
another reason to steal rather than going legit?
(p.s. I live in asia, getting legit copies of N.A. films is nearly impossible. I have supported the rest of the seeries by buying all the seasons on DVD)
why do the Canadiens constantly get things right where we can not. As an example, anyone who has ever gone to Niagra falls can tell you that the Canadiens are better than us at almost everything my personal favorite...
Americans have the right to bear arms. Canadian women have the right to bear breasts.
I believe the reason for us getting everything right while the US gets everything wrong, is that section 15 of the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms only extends rights to 'actual persons', not 'legal persons' like the US system (corporations are classified as 'legal persons') so we don't have the same problem of having to constantly welcome our evil corporate overlords.
I was on shaw@home for broadband way back when I was in highschool (Y2K-ish), and it was great, I never had a single problem with Shaw.
then Rogers came through our area and took over for shaw.
the day we were switched to rogers@home, download speeds were cut in half, and on average, my internet was down one day a month. soon after, prices shot way up.
rogers was terrible, but the only options in my area were rogers, sympatico, or dial-up, 3 bad options, and rogers was the least bad, so i was stuck with them untill i moved to south korea and got good internet service.
if i were able to use my one remaining mod point in this thread, I would use it to mod that comment +1 funny. (or +1 insightful, which seems to be the current trend regarding funny posts)
Of course, we're now one step closer to making it impossible to detect cheating on tests, and similar scenarios. While teachers will be unable to detect these silent, unvocalized sounds being transmitted through the air, I'm sure the transmitter collar around their neck MIGHT clue them in that something strange is going on.
students will try to hide the neck band under their collar, but teachers will change the rules for attending exams so the device wont be so easy to hide.
outside the exam room, a sign will be posted that reads:
T-shirts only. No turtlenecks allowed!
then teachers will wonder why all essay questions now include penis jokes.
Turns out he was using someone's wifi connection to browse child porn. Imagine having that traced to your ip. Given the current guilty until proven innocent attitude when it comes to crimes against children your likely to lose your house and job before they even bother (if they bother) to find out you were innocent in the first place. 1. you have my IP records. its an open account, no encryption...look at this, (opens.bat file that reveals internet activity) my neighbour, the creepy grade 3 teacher, is using it right now...how strange... 2. you have a list of the material that was downloaded. 3. Here is my hard drive, 4. here are all of my monthly backup disks 5. if you find any of that material, let me know.
the police are people, too. if you are kind, pleasent, honest, and up front with them, they tend to not be dicks.
as for the DoS attacks and spammers....I think I will check my wifi activity more often. but because most of my neighbours are really freaken old, i don't think i have to worry about that.

So how about radio? if a song is broadcast on the radio, and people can hear it for free, then record lables are losing hundreds of thousands of sales each time a song is played. you would think they would have regulated that, made the radio companies pay millions in royalties.
