Why ? Why is it a necessity ? Do you really think having publicly addressed cell phones and voip handsets in their millions on the internet is going to a be a good thing ? NAT might not be the prettiest idea around but it has advantages beyond just expanding the available ip address space, and the biggest advantage is security. Wouldn't it be great if I constantly had to patch my cell phone software because of venerability's.

This makes me mad , how bloody ironic is that the US can make Australia extradite its own citizens for "Copyright Infringement", yet the US wont even sign (and is bribing other countries not to as well) the treaty for the International Criminal court that would allow prosecution of War crimes and wouldn't even require countries to extradite to it if there own legal systems could handle the alleged crime.., Bloody Howard (I am currently living in NZ and I am starting to actually like NZ's socialist overlords in comparison) someone needs to give Costello the keys to a bus ..

What is up with the American education system ? , First it produces creationists, then global warming deniers. Study the science mate, have a good hard look at it , a lot of scientists being funded independently have done a lot of work before coming to any conclusions. I won't even respond to your points since they follow the same urban logic that creationists favor and we all know there is no point arguing with them. But I would recommend you and read the scientific literature about global warming (both sides, and avoid the ones funded by oil companies, republicans and environmental nut jobs) and you will see that the majority opinion in favor of global warming has a very well researched argument that make your points look rather juvenile.

  4. Linux needs a better desktop on An Open Source Tipping Point? · · Score: 1

I think Linux is heading towards tipping point in the server space, (look at the companies like Cisco and what they are producing new software on at them moment) but I don't think Linux will ever reach desktop tipping point without a major change in the way some things are done. There is a very good example of a Desktop Libre software project currently well on its way to tipping point, Firefox , the most important thing to note about Firefox is that it is Firefox doing it not Mozilla. Mozilla has been stable and available for a good few years now but it wasn't till Firefox grew out of it that it became a threat to IE. As most of us know it is because of the speed and ease of use that was introduced through the Firefox project. Linux also needs a change for it to break through in the Desktop space and I believe it is something to re-engineer/replace X-Windows. I have been using Linux for 6 years now and have used it for desktops most of that time , however 1.5 years ago I bought a 12" Powerbook and I haven't really used Linux for anything but servers since. The GUI's of KDE and Gnome are both good and are getting better but there is something severely lacking about the graphical under pinings of Linux that make the, seem cheap and nasty in comparison to the commercial GUI's. Linux on the desktop needs to learn from OSX not Windows Just imagine , (and no this is never gonna happen) if OS X was open sourced , Aqua would take 6 months to become the GUI of choice for alot of unix users and would propel linux into the desktop market like a bat out of hell. The linux community (especially Gnome and KDE) needs to get together and sort out a new or fixed graphical engine to help it go forward into the future.

Here in New Zealand every single bank has an internet banking service (in fact my bank www.bankdirect.co.nz is phone and internet only) only one of our banks (BNZ) services is OS dependant. When the first services were introduced the banks flirted with OS dependant sites but soon gave up. We also can do mostly everything via our web banking that we could do at a phisical bank I have had to ring my bank all of 2 times in the year and a half I have been with them. We also have a wide spread (95% of retail stores, including fast food , taxis and fuel pumps) EFTPOS (electronic fund transfer point of sale) system so hardly anyone uses Checks anymore and young people hardly even carry cash, this intergrated with internet banking is awesome as your money becomes alot easier to manage :-).

I live in a geek flat(name for communal rental property in NZ), we have a 10/100/1000baseT capable flush mount UTP network and a network cupboard with a 48 port patch panel, sat net connection, 24 port switch and a 32 extension Digital/Analog PABX we built it all ourselves with minimal fuss, all it took was 4 of us (3 boys and my missus) deciding we wanted to live together one of the main attractions for us all was the fact we all wanted a geek setup. The best thing about our house though is the fact that it is spacious beautiful and nice to live in (you dont havce to comprise comfort for geekness:-). Heaps of our mates have similar setups at their flats. I would suggest you find a bunch of geek mates you know you can live with find your self a nice house and when you sign the Tenancy contract you ask the landlord about weather they would be all right with some well done wiring added for free (heh not suprisingly they almost always say yes :-) Good Luck

Secondly , surely the inclusion of a public referendum on a parties internal candidate balloting system must be against some part of your constitution (it would seem oddd if you were allowed to carry guns and shoot each other, but basic democratic fairness wasn't upheld) as it it is a mass pervision of democracy to favour one group of people over another
And Thirdly , its about time geeks got more political about these things , i sure as hell know that if I wasn't on the other side of the pacific ocean I would be helping out informing the voters of Holland, Michigan about the issue (it shouldn't be hard with the sort of facts that were presented in this article) so maybe anyone who feels strongly about this issue and is able to travel to Holland should go and help out. I would be pretty certain that the AFA will ship in many pious individuals for their campain. (plus if it is a real fight , your national media might pick up on it thus giving the anti-censorware argument a good hearing).

I come from a country that has no written constitution or bill of rights but I dont feel any less free than any American , yes I may not be free to buy a handgun for the sole purpose of shooting people, walk down the street waving a swastika or deny my child medical treatment because of my messed up religious views, but I can watch a television program with less fear it has had all pictures of naked bums cut out so as not to offend my innocent eyes or buy a beer at the same age as I can vote or go off to war ... I am not saying that America is that much worse than every other country but it is deffinantly no better than many of it's peers.
