    This sounds like a valid business decision for a "dot-com" startup to be making especially given the market. I'm going to continue supporting Loki. They will ultimately succeed.

    Two statements that need to be discussed:

    1. "Open Software is insecure."..Microsoft has one of the LEAST secure OS's (yesterday the root exploit on ALL Windows 2000/IIS 5 servers was discovered).. yet they say open source is insecure? Patches to open software are consistantly released sooner than those to closed software.

    2. "open-type" software licenses (the ones that allow all of the source code to be obtained) are bad. MS uses the BSD tcp/ip stack on all versions of Windows... without "open-type" software, MS would have no.. NO networking (at least no TCP/IP).

    I guess when scared, people will say anything.....

    Ok, so why would anyone want to buy a more bloated OS that has requires Micro$oft to "unlock" it for use and that has an unfamiliar interface? For the "web" interface? Not.. seems the same old "pay more, get less, have less freedom" scheme that M$ delivers so well.

    Linux/MySQL are FREE/Stable and easy to program

    (MySQL is also fast as a Rabit on crack..)

    "REAL"

    database.. now come on.. Access/MS SQL are full

    of GUI-boy toys.. that doesn't make them more

    "real". 98%.. if 98% works, and it's free,

    ok, lets see..

    #1. (note, I already found one). MySQL is free, fast and easy to use.

    #2. If you have a DBA that can't figure out MySQL but can understand MS-SQL, they are not a DBA.

    #3. Many, MANY sites use MySQL for production day-to-day HEAVY traffic..

    #4. The Windoze clients are where the duct-tape is, not the MySQL database.

    #5. Backup and Restoration of a MySQL database does not require special "pay to play" software.

    #6. Any junior level sys-admin knows enough unix to keep a linux box running and use MySQL on it. (if they are a "ONLY M$" admin, then fire them and hire a unix admin.. he will know both OS's anyway. Seldom is the reverse true)

    #7. MySQL support is free (via EXCELLENT newsgroups, IRC, etc..) --> Ever tried M$ support? It's an oxymoron.

    #8. A Crappy Idea, and maintenance disaster is a office with a single admin that only knows wintel, runs mission critical/security conscious apps. on it and is foolish enough to discredit the FASTEST growing OS on the market.

    Have a nice day.. now "go do the right

    thing". (Use the linux/MySQL solution).

    Duh, the Linux kernel has adapted rapidly from ancestors within it's same species. That's not evolution.. It's REVolution! :)

    Ok, sure there is evidence for adaptation within species. To take that to the next step is to say that creatures have evolved from one species to the next.. there has never been any evidence to support that theory. Sure, we are similiar in makeup to the rest of creation.. big deal. We are also 50% water.. that doesn't make us a lake (or does it *grin*). Why in the VERY VERY plentiful fossil record is there not a single intermediate link? IE: cat -> dog (there should be fossils of "cogs or dats"). "Punctuated Something" is the theory that these leaps between species happened so fast that there just isn't any evidence.. now THAT theory takes faith.. and lots of it!! (I was taught that Darwin said evolution occured over millions of years..) Show me the evidence of Evolution (no, not the "apemen" that have been found to be false..like the pigs tooth that was "scientifically" determined to have been from an ape-man and later the real source was discovered.). Darwin himself said that "the fossil record will add support to my theory", it appears that the fossil record has done the opposite. Where is the evidence of Evolution? I can see the evidence of Creation any time that I look in my childrens eyes, watch a sunset or examine the incredible design of DNA and the Genome (keyword is design).

    Yes, I experience the same problems.. I'm just happy that I'm not over 40 because then it becomes difficult to find a job. At least they will hire me (at 32) even if they don't listen to my advice. Fun problem we have with our current system...

    Seems as tho any PC without a command line is "ancient" .. well, so is the wheel. Sometimes the best way IS the old way.. sure, GUI is nice.. but without being able to script or get under the hood ,a user is quite crippled (albeit saved from their own stupidity). (kinda like M$ "ME", Windoze NT, etc..). Mac made an excellent choice in using freeBSD in OS/X hope they stick with it and allow for kernel updates/etc. -Celtic

    How does Microsoft figure? If we are dumb enough, we can use their "Jump" tool to port our java code to c# (which would be making platform independant code platform dependant -- I don't see any benefit). Sounds like MS is thinking of removing the Java Virtual Machine from IE and trying to take over the thin client world.. not by quality of product.. but by bullying their way in. -Celtic

    Let me get this straight.. so if the need (demand) for a type of skill decreases, then employers should still pay the higher wages? NOT EVEN CLOSE!! .. the GREAT thing about America and Capitalism is that anyone can be wealthy if they work hard, expand their education and have a little luck on their side. - of course if Society (and unions) Teach them TO MILK EVERYONE ELSE and live with the attitude.. it's not fair! not fair!!, it causes employees to become victims. Less productive/Less motivated victims. After all, we all should get the same wages right? (no, not right! the harder working, more skilled employees deserve more $ than the lazy ones that have earned seniority by sitting on their ass in a union for many years) -Celtic

    I will not join a union unless I am starving to death and that is the only option. Right now, the Unions are the ones that are acting as if they're starving to death. If only that was true. Union == Mobster, Lazy, Useless. Let a union take some of my wages?? For what?? For whining to my employer and making him lose money (the thing that allows him/her to hire me?) No Thanks! At one time they had a place.. now they aren't needed and it appears the union leaders are realizing such. -Celtic

    Listen, I am both Microsoft (MCSE) and Sun (SSA) certified. I have worked with Solaris, Linux and Windows for years. How can windows users that have little if any Unix knowledge, make any comment on what Taco has to say? I'm sure some of the posts were written by people with experiance on both platforms.. but.. Of the people that LOOVVEE M$ many know little or no Unix .. Most M$ users only know M$. Most Unix users know BOTH Unix and M$. Taco is entitled to his opinion (which it just so happens is accurate this time..you overly defensive Microsoft Borgs!) As far as microsoft.com being usefull, I guess that value is in the browser of the beholder. I don't personally have much use for Microsofts web site except when I need to patch my servers. Unfortunately, Microsoft often releases patches long LONG after a problem has been made known (see L0pht.com for a quote from the Microsoft folks). I admin both Unix and Windows machines, If I need a good technical reference I go to O'Reilly and buy a book on the subject.. not microsoft. Or I go to Docs.Sun.Com , Cisco or Linux.org but I don't go to Microsoft.com which is apparently a good thing because they have had DNS problems most of the day! -Celtic

    True, this sounds like a great idea.. but it also sounds like Microsoft is grasping any concept that can lead them toward world domination (in the desktop sense).. .net, C#, now this.. too bad they can't seem to get a simple enterprise level server (windows2000) to function properly.. then they could perhaps attempt these tasks.. But heh, they will be two companies soon anyhow.

    BwaaaHaaaHaaa... Apology.. for which?? 1. testing Linux to NT but not NT to linux file system performance. 2. using an older kernel 3. being PAID by Microsoft to do the 'test' 4. allowing you to 'cuwstomize' the test environment such that microsoft would look better (I am sorry that you got tasked with that.. after all, it must have been very VERY difficult to do)
