    The X-files has all the relevnace of WIN buttons (not the computer kind,lets see who remebers what they were) and the price of octarine tinted sunglasses on the hub.

    If you want to hear the real dealstuff the Xfile cant deliver anymore, go listen to art bell, go listen to X Minus One, Dimension X, and even Earth Search.

    It sadens me to see so many people so tied up in such a shitty excuse for a TV show. The only way X Files could get any worse is if they hired Richard Greeco and the cast of Freinds to come in and have the whole thing written by Sid and Marty Croft.

    David D, go home and have some sex with your wife. Jesus man, your married to one fine piece and you actualy leave the house? With all that so called "Sexual addiction" you have you should order in every night and day and get housekeeping to change your sheets every 6 hours.

    Do not hold your breath, or your security concerns, for an OFFICAL announcement. In fact, that it even came out at all is more than I thought would happen.

    The best course of action is to just assume the worst, or near worst. If you send something in the Clear over the wires it can be read. If you store something in the Clear, it can be gotten and read. If you encrypt something you will be hampering the easy reading of your transactions, but that sooner or latter those alwasy will be read if the need arises.

    Do not look to the media or your elected officials for guidence, thats a deer-in-the-headlights approach. Grab some good strong crypto, legal or not, and use it. Also dont put out on the wires things you dont want everyone knowing.

    This way you have some control over the flow of possibly compromised information

    oh yea, and on every clear or encrypted message tack on this string in the clear...

    Through out the administration of Clinton/Gore we have gotten a great look at how people Talk the Talk of Freedom and then walk all over it with jack boots.

    For all of you who support clinton/gore, thanks for being such a large part of the problem. With your vote you empowered an administration to continue cutting your freedoms with a hatchet. For all the bellywaching against Regan and Bush across the 80's you would have thought there would be some enlightenment in the 90's.Bzzzzzwrong.

    The sad part is that many of the voices taht played apologist to Clinton for his terms are already voicing thier support for Al Gore, on of the moving forces of much of the freedom removal under his current boss.

    One of the big questions this next election will answer is this, given that the net has spread to be a part of many voters lives, can it make a difference in education or is it just that the worst of judgment come out in the ballot box?

    Freedom or Fucked, the choice , as always, is between your ears.

    There is a marked difference between being INFLUENCED and RIPPING OFF. Its obvious when you watch Pat Boone do a Little Richard song that it was a Rip Off , and a bad one at that.

    When I first heard Green Day, before i even knew how they were, I thought "oh wow the buzzcocks got new songs out?".

    Taking a thing, a meme, an influence and then crafting it to make something all togther your own is a special talent. When done even half way it is a magic greater than all the corporate hocus pocus that springs forth the BackStreet Boys or Menudo part 23(ricky martinez)

    There is a tendenacy to attribut actual creative worth to groups that are doing little more than dressing up in thier parents/older siblings clothes, playing air gtr, making faces in the mirror and calling themselves a group.

    Entertaining? Sometimes. Creative? Not often.

    Influence is a great thing, being the Rich Little of Goth/Punk/Glam/Wahtever is a poor substitution.

    Long gone are the dys where Mr Bowie strutted and fretted his hours on stage. The mascara and glitter are now put aside for the serious nature of his retirement funds and of keeping the corporate entity know as DAVIDBOWIE.COM satiated.

    So to will many groups and artist go into this great good future, not with a loud bang of rock-n-rebellion but with the dull whimper of press releases and sponsorships.

    Even the often touted Chuck D, who has done some great things in his time, has fallen to teh siren call of the False Tech. MP4 was a bad move at best.

    Happily folks are begining to call the Emperor on his lack of New Clothes. TMBG, as has been pointed out on this forum, have been doing this for a long time. The bands on MP3.com, myself included, have been doing it and with a better biz model for a while as well.

    You would think, though, that the PR folks would know enough not to make such statements caliming thier artist is the FIRST to do something long since done. I think it was Billy Idol who tried to foist himself ont he net early on and got the bums rush in return. Its a shame the record companys did not learn form that.

    If your gonna front the net populace, at least do it properly.

    I think maybe Mr Bowie needs to harken back to his own songs to maybe grabt he glam back some, to learn the leason he tried to teach the world of two decades past.

    Ohh goody, another retro nostalgia chance to seel out on old ideas.

    The new crop of "glam" make the old crop look damn near respectable, not an easy task at all. They prance and flash but under it all its like Greenday was to punk, like perl jam is to rock, like puff daddy is to hip hop.

    No matter how much you try you cant rewrite history, you cant live in a time thats past, and you cant BE when your just a WANABE.

    For all the bellyaching about Abe I have to say his answers read better than most any Jon "I want to be a 18 year old hacker" Katz.

    No matter what you have to dump on this kid, he went and went where he wanted and used whatever tools he could to do it...More power to him. Would that more you loud mouthing do nothing "geeks" did the same. then maybe we would not have the general LACK of any real ACTION or WORTH here.

    In an age where 90% of the people talk loud and do nothing it is refreshing to see some one go out and kick some crap around. True he made some mistakes, true it was MTV (play the DK's "MTV get offf the air" here), and true he did play badly with terminology (which he cops to if you actualy read the aswers).. but he DID SOMETHING.

    Get off your fat code induced lard asses and go take a bit out of lifes pie.

    Chip wise- the K7..the systems you can roll around on of them is shapping up to be not only nice and powerfull but it somes in at a nice price.

    With a whole slew of periphs to choose from, OS's to lay on top and apps to run on them its a DIYers market now.

    G3 has a ways to go yet before it gets to the point you can rool the same systems with the same ease( ie walking into mom and pop parts stores and walking out with a Bag o' parts)

    I see this move to opening up the process on these other chips way way overdue. its not just a good idea, the rest of the market has shwon it to be a Do or Die option.

    I embrace anything that will let me roll it better, cheaper and faster....As david lee once said(and I paraphrase here)

    Who knows. The runnign track record of Steve "i used to be cool, really" Jobs is to act like a 5 year old at his own birthday party. Ita all about "me mine more" than about apple.

    Besides, Apple with out Wozz is Van Halen without David Lee....look at the history of both. Sure apple is selling mroe now, but its the Sammy Hagar of computer (I cant drive 55 should be the theme song of the iMac generation)

    The G3 stuff is neat, but there is better happening all around them. MacOs X would have been great about three years ago, and with all the features they dumped for that time. As it stands its just another OS in a crowd of OS's (sun, *nix)

    Lets all just gather round and have a group prayer that Jobs either doesnt see this on his radar or neglects to act.

    No matter how great you feel in your jihad of choice, you have now to face the fact that the plunders are being divided, your work is being taged with a cash $ sticker and your bible of turth is now for sale on a shelf along side the DemonWin and others.

    I noticed this transition over a year or two back when folks seemed to be driftin from teh fun of playing with the system of Linudx and began the push towards making it User Freindly. Not that user freindly is a bad idea, but Linux is, at its best, a fast driving hard truning race track to test the skills and hone the ability of it users.

    When they started putting padding on the curves, all that changed.

    One can say Linux lost its virgin zeal the minute it stepped away from the practicalites of CLIdom and workability and spent large chunks of its time arguing over how an Icon should look on a screen.

    So now Linux is a Money Making venture with large chunks of cash at stake. You think the realses of tomorrow wont be thiniking about the demands of the Buying Public versus the Bleeding Edge Techers. Who do you think BUYS a linux install anyway, some one who knows how to do a net install over thier dsl??? Nope, its the same folks who BUY software and expect it to work out of the box( yes it has a box) with MINIMAL hassle. The words Kernerl and Complie are going to fade from the fore to be replaced by, CUSTOMER and Support. Chaching. Next customer please.

    I will support indie films that are orginals, not ones that are blatant rip offs of others and then try to seel themselves as something truly unique.

    Thats the same type of Big Hollywood spin that I am seeking NOT to support in films. If you can be fooled by this obvious tactic it speaks to the general decline of real support for real films and more to the Hypinization of the mindset

    Instead of looking to JOn katz or other Hype machines to tell you what to watch...go see some real films of worth like Evil Dead I and II (low budget horror film that makes blair witch project seem like a afternnon visit with Mr Rodgers) Night Of the Living Dead Most Early John Carptener films For non horror go rent out Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil(the newly released directors cut) ANYTHING by akira kerasua, Dr Strangelove..... Go nuts, head to a movie store and pick titles you never heard of before. EXPLORE, use your own mind. Waiting for hollywood to MAKE YOU a good film is as pointless as waiting for someone to teach you perl.. \ Do for yourself. If jon katz were realy into this so called "revolution" he would be yelling that louder than how hip he thinks he is.

To wit, Jon katz seeks to place Blair Witch Marketing Project as THE BEST ORIGINAL indie film ever...replaceing Clerks, Last Broadcast, and a slew of others. He wants us to forget about the idea of it being a Good movie or a BAD movie and instead only see it for its marketing. "dont look at its flaws, see how shinny it is" I was loking forward to having a movement of thought on slashdot, not more of the same fluff and nutters. Jon katz, the john the baptist of the Corporate Hype Machine , seeks to guide our tastes away from such concetps as truth in reivews, originality and content in lieu of his over blown verbosity that is full of sounf and fury and stinks like a rotting pile of baba ganush. I cant wait to see how he backpeddles on this backpeddle when people call him on his stupidity. Jon KAtz, if you are reading this (does he even read the forums here or is it just a drive by bullshit spray from his "hipster" vw bug?), if and when you can review a thing on its content and self rather than your hypefilled marketing mask, let me know.     Jon katz not only misses the point of real horror, he misses it on media as well.


    Old Time Radio shows like ESCAPE and SUSPENSE used the spoken word and some sound fx to make the audience feel these emotions, to sit on the edge of thier seats. They used WORDS to spark the minds eye, not a visual stream to spoon feed the audience.


    If Katz were truly into touting the real ways of Low-Techo he would have at least mentioned this, but hhe is once again found empty of real substance.
