    You've missed the point of my post, but never mind

    MySQL is safe because it's GPLed, allowing the code can be forked, hence MariaDB et al

    ...and any other OS without package management

    Most Linux distros will simply just point the mysql packages to mariadb (or whatever fork), and end-users will not have to do (or know) anything

    Upgrade, continue as usual, and wonder why the windows people are jumping up & down...

    It is indeed currently illegal to format shift here
    but it's not enforced

    Under the same law it's technically "illegal" to tape something off the TV
    but only in the most obvious of obvious selling-bootleg-copies-down-the-market instances is anything ever done about it

    Scientifically, in order to measure something and have a meaningful result you can compare across different samples, it has to have a strict and well understood definition

    I've never used Windows 7 (nor Vista, nor XP post service-release 1), so I can't draw any comparisons, but most people are technically illiterate and will simply use what's given to them
    This says nothing about which is technically "better" than the other
    MS stays dominant on the desktop through inertia only

    You're assuming the one goal of Linux (and by that, I mean the community around Linux and other FOSS projects) is to beat MS

    While some may wish to see Linux raise above Windows in market dominance, others (and I wager, most) do not see this as important, and only wish to produce a better suite of software than MS

    In this, Linux has most definitely won
    and it won many years ago

    If an off-by-one error results in the monthly report generation failing if the last day of the month falls on a saturday, then we'll quietly fix the code and tell the user this was a one-off problem most likely caused by incorrect user input but if it ever happens again to let you know

    Some proper organised crime group has usurped the name, surely.

    If you knock your phone into the passenger footwell reaching for your cigarrettes, are the council going to come next day and tear your road up?

    But I've seen the phrase "open source" used all over the place by non-tech people
    Particularly when they want to express the idea of a transparent process, one that's open (to debate and democratic reform)

    Possibly old legacy firmware images that are being kept for some reason?

    Actually, from what I've heard (yeah anecdotal, I know)
    Non-free binary-blob firmware in the kernel is fast becoming a non-issue
    With the success of Android and other non-x86 Linux based devices, having a closed CPU specific blob is not an option anymore if you want device makers to use your hardware

    I think you'll find Debian is doing this now, because now most devices have open firmware code that can be compiled for different architectures

    and race up the east coast into the demilitarised zone between N & S Korea
    Avoiding the barrage of automatic gun fire, we'll hurtle into North Korea

    Now, as many western maps have no details on the layout of North Korea, we'll all become James May for the day, and probably get lost
    But by mid-afternoon we must have traversed west through North Korea, and begin our journey back south down the western coast

    Again, avoiding the barrage of automatic gun fire as we pass into South Korea, we'll finish the race in a town called Gwangju for a traditional Korean evening meal (which Hammond won't eat)
