This is the most insightful post I've ever read about global warming. Humans are quite arrogant to believe that we have that much power over nature. Let's face it folks, if we disappeared today, in 1000 years, all that would be left would be fossils...
So let's figure out how to not become fossils and make living in a warmer climate a reality, because we are sure going to have a harder time fighting an ice sheet if we actually can make the planet colder and it gets out of control.
#2 if you look through history, the average GLOBAL temperature over a one year period has typically hovered around 0 deg C for most of history. I hear that is an important temperature for something..... Anytime the temperature strays from freezing dramatic changes happen to the global environment. See there's my problem with global warming. You're talking about average temperatures for most of history, which is MAYBE 2000 years. Considering ice ages last between 40,000-100,000 years, that doesn't seem too significant to predict the climate. The problem with scientists is, they are not geologists. Ask most geologists if climate change is occurring, and they will tell you that climate is never constant. Quite frankly, I'd rather have it warmer rather than colder. More survivable area on the earth if the tropics expand as opposed to half the earth being covered in ice.
After dutifully checking all three linked articles, not one of them specifies a version of Windows that "runs well". Just remember that poor foreign kids when Microsoft charges you $100 bucks for software they no longer support.
I don't doubt that Windows 3.1 runs fine under VirtualBox running in Linux... Of course that might have been mentioned in the article, but who reads that anyway?
Acutally, you can survive a limited amount of time exposed to space. See 2001: A Space Odyssey. Arthur C Clarke knew what he was talking about.
Yes, space is very very cold. But vacuums are very good insulators, so there isn't much to take the heat away from you other than radiation, which is a very slow process to lose heat by. Your blood will boil from the low pressure before you'd freeze or suffocate.
Don't get me wrong, I am a HUGE fan of linux, I use it on all my computers. However, there is no point in releasing drivers for this in Linux because the only use would be physics accelerated games, which won't be ported to Linux anyway. Any program that would use accurate physics in Linux already uses the CPU to calculate it.
I'd just thing you'd have to show that a majority of them are without legal basis because if you sue everybody, some of them are bound to have downloaded illegally.
What kind of a law can reduce racism? I was under the impression that you could not legislate thoughts... If people are racist, laws sure as hell wont change it. How about we trying changing society to reduce racism instead of changing the government?
It's all becoming clear now. A lot of Islamic terrorists are engineers. That explains why they have no infrastructure over there... The engineers are too busy killing themselves to build a society. Boy I'm glad my engineering degree will be put to better use than suicide.
You make some good points, however you are slightly misguided. First of all, hydrogen can be used in an existing otto cycle engine. Hydrogen combustion can easily run a modified engine since anything explosive and a gas could theoretically work (though random burning things are better suited for diesel engines). They actually did this on Mythbusters and fed hydrogen gas into the carburator of a car. It ran for a couple of seconds until it backfired and burning hydrogen came up in their faces, but that's because hydrogen has a different octane than gasoline (so does ethanol by the way), so both require a modified (more expensive) engine.
As for your next point, both hydrogen and ethanol require new infrastructure if they are to replace oil. Ethanol contrary to popular belief is not just gasoline from corn. It cannot and DOES NOT take the same production path as gasoline. Oil products are transported primarily by pipeline which costs about a penny per gallon to move it across the county. Ethanol cannot be used in pipelines because A) it grows mold B) is highly corrosive and C) is totally useless if water infiltrates the pipeline. Thus all ethanol today is shipped in barges, rail cars, and mostly by fuel trucks, all of which run on diesel. Thus the cost associated with shipping ethanol is much higher than shipping gasoline, which is the number one reason why E-85 stations are not everywhere.
In fact, the only reason why ethanol is taking off is because it's a fairly good additive to gasoline to increase the octane rating (much better than lead in any case) and the government pays oil companies to sell it. It isn't profitable at all to make or sell on its own.
Now if you want to talk about Biodiesel, now that's something totally different. It runs unmodified in diesel engines (and is actually better for them) and it can be piped right along side normal diesel in a pipeline (provided it doesn't get too cold). Plus diesel engines have been more efficient than otto cycle engines for a long time. They only reason they haven't taken off is because ignorant Americans (yes, I'm an American too) have a stupid idea that diesel is dirty technology.
No, it is not possible to uninstall IE altogether. Windows may report that it is uninstalled, but it is never gone. Which is the basis for security issues.
Windows would be much more secure if explorer.exe and iexplore.exe weren't the same application. Don't believe me? Open My Computer and type in a web address. Even if you "uninstalled" IE, explorer.exe will magically transform and become iexplore.exe and render a web page.
On a side note, it's interesting to see that Microsoft screws themselves over with this too. In Vista, if your license expires and you can only open a web browser to activate Vista, well you can just type the file location of explorer.exe and voila, you can run any application again. Does anyone else see the absurdity of having a web browser and a file browser being one and the same?
Well, since we're off topic, I have another similar situation... My first day on the job as a co-op, I wore a shirt and tie, and my boss told me not to wear a tie because I was making everyone look bad (I'm pretty sure he was joking). Some people like a more casual environment.
Rice can be stolen and then resold on an international market for money. I was under the impression that XOs could only be used in a certain area or they'd be useless. So the real question is, would you rather give $200 of rice to a dictator that the people will never see, or try and get them a machine that can help spread education and freedom to peoples all over the world?
That's a load of crap. Many of these applications differ from business to business... I learned AutoCAD in high school and college. My company uses Bentley. They still saw my extensive AutoCAD experience and knew that I learned to draft. Yes the commands are different, but so are the company policies, structure, and missions. You have to transition in any environment. Hence teaching should be about concepts, NOT software.
This is an excellent point. Companies just keep sticking more fancy looking crap on their websites leaving bandwidth unchanged.
My university did this with the registration website. The added flash and java to make it look cool, except when registration time hit, all that load brought the registration server to its knees. When many students weren't able to register for several days after their allotted time, the system was reverted to the plain ol' html interface it was before. When will websites realize that just because your public has the bandwidth, doesn't mean they need to use it?
If I ever get trapped in an underground bunker, I'll know to cut the crap and head straight into the vents. Only after I've grabbed my crowbar of course!
And don't even get me started on my ladder climbing education...
Hey, it worked in Star Trek

Didn't you see First Contact? As soon as we find aliens, world peace occurs. Can't you please think of the children?
I can just see the commanders of the future placing strategic infinite gernade bins around the battlefield so the soldiers can spam gernades upon the enemy.
Actually, I could care less if I got modded up. In fact, I already have excellent karma and didn't use the bonus because I knew it didn't contribute. However, I thought it was funny and apparently (with the exception of a random informative) was modded funny and thus the mods, in their infinite wisdom, agreed. The idea behind the funny mod not increasing karma is just that. Because it doesn't really add to the discussion, and it doesn't take a whole lot of thought to come up with. But it does brighten my day when I see a funny post, and thus it should be modded up so it can be seen by others. That is the spirit of Slashdot, not flaming as an AC.

Indeed, while it may be $1 a gallon, if you only get 5 miles to the gallon, it's not a particularly good deal now is it?
Now there is something to think about. Maybe the Russians or Chinese have put it to the test?

My girlfriend claims her bed shook from the earthquake last night and woke her up... I couldn't break the truth that it was really me! (zing)
Seriously though, it did wake her up and we live in Dayton, OH.
(note: I know no one will believe me that a slashdot person has a girlfriend, but she is a civil engineering major, and thus also a geek)

Welcome to chemistry 101. My name is danbert and our first lesson is the chemical makeup of water. It is one part oxygen and two parts hydrogen.
If there is water, there is oxygen and hydrogen. If we have the technology to get there, we have technology to do electrolosys.
