  1. What's this doing here? on Egyptian Security Forces Storm Pro-Morsi Camps Leaving Nearly 100 Dead · · Score: 1

While tragic if true, in the light of the blatant manipulation of public opinion by mainstream news agencies (paid for by various intelligence services) in recent years I don't believe ANYTHING regarding Asia+Africa that I see in our (western) media, or any other media for that matter. Also, as we have all (hopefully) learned by now, this kind of havoc is for the locals - here it's Egyptians - to solve, and for us it acts only as a distraction from our problems, like all the lying by our governments, price-fixing of commodities by big investment banks, paranoid-level spying by just about everybody with $5 to spare, pervasive corruption and outright stealing in the EU (and US isn't any better by now). I'm so angry just seeing this mind-game playing, adrenaline pumping piece of ... news here on /....

People, what happened to you? I grew up in the communist block, and we used to like the USA, the country where you could express your opinion, where there was real justice, where anybody could live a decent life if he was willing to work, without everybody else trying to rob him... This seems so long ago. Now I see exactly what we have overthrown some 23 years ago - a totalitarian state with security everywhere and unprosecutable prosecutors (who watches the watchers? well, nobody does), where the government bullies a smart, standup guy, and his neighbours are so twisted by all the intellectual property hype that they don't do anything about it but rather rationalize their apathy by explaining to themselves how he actually did commit a crime. Looks to me like the terrorists already won, your precious freedom is long gone, and your stay in Afghanistan is just a waste of money. Feel free to hate me for this opinion, at least you will have some illusion of freedom ;)

I don't agree with you. Look at the numbers at http://space.kursknet.ru/cosmos/english/other/stat_kk.sht NASA spends a lot of money, sever times more than the Russians, and with all this effort it manages to kill more people just because at the critical moment politics prevails over reason - that is more than mismanagement, that's really stupid, selfish, and arrogant. NASA did way more man-flights than USSR/Russia, but on the other hand the Russians spent much more time in space. You're right, at least the article suggest so. It also says that the court disregarded some EC directives and previous cases based on them. Since precedents are not binding in our law system, it is free to do so, and the plaintiff will have to appeal the decision in a higher court.

  16. Re:I live in Slovakia on Newspaper Articles Not Copyrightable In Slovakia · · Score: 2

Yes it does. It's not as strict as U.S. law, and it even recognizes 'private use' - for example I may copy a portion or all of certain types of copyrighted works (including movies and music, but not books) for private use, without having to notify or pay the copyright owner. He/she is reimbursed from a small tax levied on all recording media and devices (CD/DVD media and burners, HDDs, ...). The law also recognizes derivative works, which are allowed (a photo of a sculpture, for example) and other useful concepts. Besides, our police has never tried to go after small-time infringers who use p2p to dl movies, music, and software. All copyright-related busts were against companies using unlicensed software on a large scale or against individuals regularly selling unlicensed copies of copyrighted works. The court decision in question here does not mention fair use, it is based on the judge's notion that news articles are just reporting factual events, and thus are not creative works (yes, we still remember the purpose of copyright :). I know the original reasoning of the plaintiff and I have to say that in my opinion the judge is wrong, since the aggregated articles are sometimes also author commentaries, which clearly are creative works, sometimes of high quality. But I cannot imagine that many of our judges are educated enough in the modern issues of copyright in the virtual world to recognize the problem, and copyright laws is not really considered a big issue here. We are still waiting on the bastard who will come and turn it into a serious business.

I don't know how about other member coutries, but in Slovakia you can donate to the politician's party. The parties also get some state donations after elections based on the votes they get, so they're supposed to get a loan to cover the campaign, and then repay it from this donation. IRL this money is not enough to run a serious political party, so they make a lot of shady deals with the private sector. The corruption is almost universal.
