Regardless, Jobs' open letter still reeks of insincerity and self servitude. He knows that the record companies will not agree to reduced DRM restrictions and so simply passes the legal and media ball to them. Apple clearly wants to appropriate blame on the record companies to stop the European Union from going after them. Apple and Jobs are great at playing the media and this is a prime example of it.
There is a vast difference between the record companies and Apple's public relations - the record companies do not require public support to be successful businesses. Look at how much Sony screwed its customers over; only then did a boycott begin, one which probably had very little effect on their bottom line. Apple however probably want to avoid being associated with restrictive and heavy handed licensing as they can see what harm it has had on Microsoft's image. In the end Jobs' letter was a simple smoke and mirrors game to even out the blame across the whole industry, with DVD Jon's comments being proof of this.
The problem is without more details on the agreement Apple has with the record companies, it is impossible to know if Apple are playing fair or not.
Thats right frdmfght. A worm like MS Blaster would have completely wiped out a large proportion of our navigation and meteorological ability, so we always kept up to date whilst in a Marina, or even by asking a nice local if we could use there internet connection a download the hotfixes. The entire activation/WGA process just takes too long in an environment where we log accurately who is online by the second, and how much is transmitted.
Good point. I work on a blue water sailing vessel with three or four PCs and it is an absolute nightmare if we need to reinstall windows or even adobe creative suite whilst in the middle of the Atlantic. Not to mention data calls are either too slow to do online activation, or cost $14 per minute for single channel ISDN. On top of that we go through so many hard drives due to the boats constant slamming and movement that we are often asked why we have activated so many time in the past. All I can think is why do we have to spend even more money on satcom charges to install licensed software?
Inevitable solution? (Other than decent backups) simply use a pirated copy and WGA crack. A sad state of affairs indeed.
Socialism is not comunism. Most governments in Europe are socialist in that they are trying to equalise the socioeconomic devide (or at least claim to). The parent is correct as left wingers in europe have worked out that laissez-fair policies benefit the rich disproportionately and therefore push for maximum governement intervention, this article being an example. No government is going to get in power saying that they are going to liberalise the economy as that equates to reduced public spending, and so it keeps growing and gaining power.
It will have to get a lot worse before it gets any better. I think we are in dire need of economic collapse, some riots will help put the government back in place - they work for US after all.
That's ok. Good effort nontheless. If you want to improve i suggest going to a terminal and typing things like lspci, dmesg, cpuinfo, meminfo etc... I think what everyone would really like is a copy of/var/log/Xorg.0.log. Post these (for example type "dmesg > file.txt", then copy them to a flash card) somewhere and you earn your geek cards.
I ought to let you know, I was only using your post as an example of shit editorial. I have no intention of getting a PS3 or looking at the hardware. Kudos for getting linux on it though.
A bit harsh perhaps. Apologies. But for a tech site it was a fairly worthless article - no offense. Just thinking there could be countless better videos to be made of the PS3. As this is a geek site, you can replace moron with non-geek which for 95% of the population is a compliment. Hope you feel better.
What do you expect it is a faithful recreation of the world we live in. Next you'll by catching typhoid and watch people taking rice stools. In fact thinking about it, so you think the developers have a god mode where they can introduce plagues, frogs and such?
why is there no option on slashdot to hide stories that have been assigned a certain tag. I would love to have all the slashvertisments hidden forever as I never interested in any of their crap, and this one takes the biscuit - it is by an absolute moron.
I was kind of hoping for a completely flat, touch sensitive keyboard (think LCARS) so you could completely redesign the key layouts, or even use as a tablet etc...
Quite. This situation seems quite similar to that of steinbeck's retelling in the grapes of wrath. The whole worker/employer relationship is a perfect example of supply/demand dynamics. By maximising potential workers you are also reducing the importance of their skill set in our economy, and therefore can reduce wages. Proft!
To be fair this is a problem across all of western society, not just IT in the US. Here in the UK the middle shop owning classes have all but been wiped out in the last 40 years. No tears shed there. Once the ball started rolling - which it did once mankind left Africa - there is sadly little that we can do to stop it. You can't blame the migrant workers and you can't really blame the management, which puts the blame squarely on the government. Unfortunately a democratic government elected every 2-5 years is only looking for short term economic gain.
Besides, isn't migration and cheap labour effectively what made the US the superpower it is today?
Exactly. Basically if you want a pseudo blackberry phone which does email well then the S60 series is the way to go. I have just got the E70 and it is simply amazing. The screen is clear and dense enough that web browsing is a charm - a far cry from my experiences of WAP 5 years ago! Now I can do online banking on the move, look up topics on wikipedia whilst in lectures, put bids on ebay, etc... all using public hotspots.
Granted the interface is slow and fairly cumbersome, plus vodafone is taking a while to release the new firmware, but I have found myself doing some rather remarkable things with the E70. For example, I was installing ubuntu on my desktop and knew that I needed to use ndiswrapper for the wireless card, my laptop is in another halls sniffing wifi so I used my phone to download the new version and the drivers. A quick swap of the SD card and I saved myself a major hassle of finding someones windows computer.
It goes to show that we shouldn't treat the S60 as a phone, and more like a PC. If you don't like it, don't get it.
But nontheless, if you provide people with an outlet for feeling like they are making a difference to the world - be it correct or not - chances are they won't search for another one. This here is an example.
These computer engineers and scietists you speak of are clearly so eager to use their expertise to help the people of Africa that they have missed the big picture. Making software for current charities would be vastly more useful.

Yeah talk about improving America's image overseas. But hey, he could mount one hell of a campaign.

We must press for change.
All hail Kibo

Would be great for games as well. Maybe ver 2.0
