    These companies are getting free bugtesting and security scanning. They should make something where the class gets paid to demonstrate these vulnerabilities on their software, and then they use the information to write patches and updates.

    OK, now how many Linux, BSD, or OS X viruses, trojans, other malware programs are successfully spreading in the wild? ZERO, ZILCH, NADA, ZIP.

    That's because no one bothers to write malware for these systems. The majority of computer users use Windows, so that's the target audience.

    It's very easy to secure Windows. Just be careful what you do with your computer, especially if it has an Internet connection. If you want to download some $exCashMoneyV!@gRa_UltimateSearchBar toolbar, that's your fault.

    I'm no fan of Microsoft, but I don't bash them for things they didn't do.

    No, the new law would apply to possible future offenses. There is no way to make a new law and then charge the mother under that law. That is a violation of the Ex Post Facto clause of the Constitution, Article I. Section 10. This is why they're trying to creatively reinterpret the existing law to squeeze in this case. They really, really, really want to punish this person, but no law exists, so they really have no recourse.

    It's certainly a shitty situation, but we have to realize that the law doesn't exist for the purpose of exacting vengeance.

    Exactly. The law usually protects more people than it harms (unless it's some shit like the Patriot Act or DMCA.) Sometimes you'll have serial killers walk free, but society has its own punishment independent of the legal system. It was written to protect the innocents who are being persecuted by a crazy corrupt government (not necessarily talking about our current government.)

    Not if you're wearing a fireproof suit. If you know what you're doing, you'll probably be able to win at the conman's own game. Obviously many people don't, and they get suckered.
