One question that I have is, "Why don't Open Source developers spend more time with their own creations and killer apps as opposed to ripping off what commercial companies have already created?" We see in a few instance that Open Source developers can do just that. Look at Apache, PHP, and MySQL for examples of packages that are unique, or not totally ripped off. Imagine what could be produced if OS developers actually built something truely unique!

While I haven't read Programming PHP I found that PHP Pocket Reference, also put out by O'Reilly and written by Rasmus Lerdorf, was one of the worst books, and easilly the worst Pocket Reference, that I've every seen. The book is lacking information and content relative to the time that book was published. Function lists are incomplete and the descriptions are weak. With that said, you may want to think twice about purchasing the full sized book.

  11. Americans can't think anymore on The Empire Stumbles · · Score: 1

The real issue with the current Star Wars franchise boils down to 2 points: 1) Star Wars movies are made for kids, and most of us who saw them as kids are seeing the new ones as adults, thus we are not the target market 2) Americans have become so incapable of following multiple storylines in a movie that they dislike those movies that do have more then 1 plot line. Point 1 is pretty self explanitory. We no longer see a Star Wars movie with the eyes and curiousity of a 10 year old. When I went to see Clones for the second time, I was listening to a kid about 8 years old sitting behind me talk with his dad prior to the movie. He was in awe. Those of us in our 20s and 30s have adult perspectives and are no longer thrilled by a basic action movie with multiple stories intermingled. Point 2 has been coming for some time. New complicated movies that have more then 1 plotline are to complex for the typical American these days. When I saw Brotherhood of the Wolf and the theater it was truely amazing. Several storylines, awesome dialog, although subtitled, and a whole tie-in with history. After discussing the movie with friends they found it complex and incomprehensible. Yes I live in the U.S., and my friends are quite bright as a general rule. But they are stereotypical in there viewing of movies.

This is just another example of how the US government is taking away basic freedoms from their citizens. At this point in our history, the average US citizen (naturalized or otherwise) have fewer freedoms and rights then under the British government prior to the Revolutionary War. We have more taxes, no real representation in Congress since the Senators and Representatives are bought and paid for by big bussiness. We can't bear arms in most cites, stories in the press are censored, our homes can be searched without a warrent under very weak excuses from the police, the state takes over federal control on a number of issues including gun control. It's only a matter of time before we can't cross the street without breaking the law.

  17. Windows won't die for a long time on ESR Says as PCs Get Cheaper, Windows Will Die · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think Eric is misreading the situation. If a PC goes below 350 bucks, people will be willing to spend much more for the OS. The reason for this is simple, 350 bucks is nothing relative to today's cost of a PC, thus $350 + OS

People won't move away from Windows for 1 of 2 simple reasons, "I don't have time to learn something new" or "I can't transfer my MS Office documents to ". While there are falacies in both arguments, end users are a stubborn ignorant bunch for the most part.
