But why would you want to waste the good stuff like Bass, Samual Adams, Fat Tire, Guinness, etc? Coors, miller and bud are just...bad. Yes I only live a few miles from Golden Colorado, and a Anheiser Busche plant isn't to far away either...now I know what they're using it for!

  5. Becoming a Unix Admin on How Did You Become a UNIX Administrator? · · Score: 5, Informative

You are not too old to become a tech person at 33. As a matter of fact, you are more likely to be taken seriously then someone who is 20.

Becoming a Jr Unix admin requires that you know the basics of Unix/Linux: creating user accounts, installations, problem determination, permissions, disk space, adding hardware, backup strategies, and simple shell scripting to name a few. Solid end user knowledge of a real *nix like Solaris, AIX, HPUX, or True64 is a huge plus.

Getting your foot in the door is often more important than what you know. You usually have to have someone on the inside who knows you before you have a chance of getting hired. Unix administration isn't a job that you can get by walking in off the street. Since you are a programmer, you do have a much better chance.

One must remember that for the most part you have no Constitutional rights if you are under age 18. The rights and resposibilities belong to your guardians. Also, how does preventing a person from play a video game deny them their Constitutional rights? The video game isn't saying anything or displaying anything of value (point and shoot video games that is...Leather Goddesses of Phobos is another story) to the free speech world. This is just a thought from the devil's advocate point of view. I personally don't believe what I just said, I've already lost enough of my Constitutional rights. We need more people on soap boxes (literally) out on the streets, people carrying guns because they can, and people who aren't apathetic of our political system.

  23. Exchange on When Is Exchange Inappropriate For The Enterprise? · · Score: 2

There are a number of reasons that the politically powerful would prefer to use Outlook and Exchange. First and foremost is name recognition. They've never heard of sendmail or q-mail, but Exchange they have. The second is the groupware features like calander, address book, etc. They don't realize that you need a dedicated admin to handle an Exchange server of 1000 employees, or the new equipment. We have found a solution to both of these. We run sendmail on an ultra 5 (small company with 35 users or so). On the desktop is Outlook. If you put Outlook on all of the desktops, you need to make sure that they are IDENTICAL versions or it can cause a serious headache (which I'm living with right now). We periodically push a new address book out to the users. You can also use LDAP for address books with Outlook. We have a web based calander server from Sun that works okay for that part of groupware. The advantage to this setup is maintenance. We spend about 10 minutes a week fixing things. This is usually new aliases, removing aliases, adding/removing users, etc. In the 10 months since we brought this system online we've had 0 major outages.
