This obviously has nothing to do with short attention span. On second thought, since this passage came at the end of the (one page) article, maybe a short attention span is to blame.

The Democrats should at a minimum cancel Bush's state of the union address. There is no constitutional requirement for the state of the union to be a speech. Deny him the trappings of office. Cancel funding for the Veeps office and airforce one while they are at it.

And after that, they should throw themselves on the ground, flailing and screaming. If that doesn't work, they should threaten to hold their breath until Bush apologizes and puts Libby back in prison.

Seriously though, what's the point? Libby would remain free and the Dems would come off looking like douchebags. There is a presidential election coming up, and the electorate doesn't like partisan politics. Libby's commutation will be a valuable talking point: "The Republicans, who think they are above the law..."

The Executive's power to pardon is an important check on the power of the Judiciary, but it's notoriously easy to abuse. In the end, the responsibility lies with the voters to punish the Executive by voting their party out.

I agree with you about the silliness of having a first-woman-in-space accolade, but sports are a different matter. Men and women have very different physiology after puberty and to pretend otherwise is fatuous. Granted, there are physiological characteristics that keep, say, (ethnic) Jews out of the NBA, but that's a very specific instance where height is at a premium. There are plenty of Jewish footballers who can compete at a world-class level.

Ending the gender-based segregation of sports would eliminate women's sports, and add little to the overall competition. They simply wouldn't be able to compete. With all due respect to Billy Jean King, Bobby Riggs was 55 when she beat him. She certainly wouldn't have fared as well against Jimmy Connors or Bjorn Borg?

That being said, I should reiterate my agreement that gender-based or race-based accolades are usually quite asinine. I saw a poster a while back announcing a lecture by Anousheh Ansari, the "first female space tourist."

Seems to me that as shootings get more prevalent it might be a good idea to have drills to limit deaths from mass panic.

Except they aren't becoming more prevalent. Worldwide, there have been around 5 shootings per year, and the number appears to be holding steady, at least for the last decade. I know that's not a very long record to plot a trend, but it's better than nothing.

Gruesome group deaths, when perpetrated by a person, have a huge psychological impact on the general public. The level of fear is vastly disproportionate to the actual threat. 24-hour news outlets intensify this fear by exaggerating the threat. I'm not saying that preparation is a bad thing, but there's no reason to scare people in the process.

Why do you assume they are lying about the evolution aspect of this game? They put out videos like a year ago that showed how you can choose where the body parts go, how many there are, what they are, etc, and the computer will calculate how the animal moves. This sounds more like Intelligent Design than evolution. Actually, now that I think about it, ID and evolution aren't mutually exclusive. ID and natural selection, however, are definitely mutex. I suppose a game in which your creatures evolved by natural selection would be more of a movie since it would require no participation (except the tweaking of universal constants, perhaps). And it would take forever.
