    You could claim that you don't have the key to unlock the drive, that is a very real defence.

    Although it my be hard to argue that you don't have the key to your system disk, since you obviously use the system.

    There's a reason Craigslist, for example, has never gone public or sold a controlling stake to a major media company: because Craig Newmark knows exactly what would happen to the site if he did. He could get more money, sure, but he's very wealthy as it is, so he doesn't need more money.

    It's called "Integrity" and unfortunately it is in short supply.

    That's why people must start using whole drive encryption. Encryption is not just for criminal use but is also to protect innocent people from having their rights violated, we need laws to prevent computers from being used as evidence.

    Had these people simply used a USB drive manually once a month (keeping it disconnected), they would've lost only one month worth of work (at most), instead of 13 years...

    Even then they would probably still be foolish enough to store the drive in the same physical place. I mean this is 13 YEARS worth of data, I just find it hard to grasp that someone would not have an off site back, different physical location and external to the system being backed up.

    As for the existence of magnets in the proximity of magnetically sensitive backups, a simple compass will indicate the existence of any harmful magnetic fields.

    I wish folks would keep these agreements in mind when they get on their soapbox about "anonymous" posters being "cowards" for not putting their names to their comments.

    Obviously you shouldn't sign the company name unless your working for them at the time. However your company does not own rights to the name you where given at birth. How people choose to identify themselves is a personal choice.

    Your wasting your breath (well fingers) because people with the parents level of ignorance really do believe they have the right to just leach and never contribute, not even 2-3KB of bandwidth to help recover the costs of sites they utilise.

    I do block pop ups, because they are intrusive but I don't understand why people have a problem with banner ads.
