Perhaps you been asleep since 1990... the priority isn't to make ourselves better as a race anymore. After working so hard to make ourselves rich there is no time anyway.

I am not a lawyer, but I've investigated Supreme Court decisions on rights of students several times. They always start "The student doesn't shed his or her constitutional rights at the schoolhouse doors, but...." and then go on to describe rights of administrators that describe a situation where the students have no rights.

All the lawyers have to do is describe a reasonable case that the admins were trying to "keep order" in the schoolhouse and this goes nowhere. The Supreme Court has often went out of its way to make school administrators despots in their own little fiefdoms. Anyone that has attended a public school since 1970 knows this.

Yeah.. I agree with that. I filled out their form and suggested the city in Indiana where I live. We have the choice between Comcast Cable Modem and Verizon DSL and that's it (except for Satellite, but that really isn't a possibility for us). My folks have Verizon DSL and they see brief outages at least weekly. My Comcast service is reliable as long as you keep your speed down below some undocumented level. But if you have a torrent that goes to fast it cuts out and requires the cable modem to be rebooted. It's very ridiculous.

Google could get into that market and change the rules like they have with other services. They have a better than average chance of doing it, too, but Google Buzz shows that they are still human.

I am not sure I get this press release. Does this mean Amazon is going to raise the price of just MacMillan books? The beginning seems to imply yes and the end seems to say no.

If it's all new titles that would be collusion. If not it actually looks like an opportunity the market could actually work for once. Other vendors could keep down their prices for big parts of the book market that don't work on big author names and MacMillan could get hurt in end.

It occurs to me that authoring a book should be a lot like raising a child. You should have the right to full control of your progeny for a little while then it's not "yours" any more. To hold on to that relationship too long is unhealthy for everyone involved, including society as a hole.

This idea that artists control their work forever is unfair to everyone.
