But maybe not more music than you can afford to download for music games. At least that has been my experience. And, furthermore, the drivers are part of the games themselves, so the old ones will never be able to access more than the 2Gb for the old type SD cards (though some 4gb non HD type cards work).

Of course, the hard drive isn't going to help the old games. So you have me there.

Of course, I don't think this would be a massive hardware change for it. Homebrewers are already putting hard drives on it. Maybe they release a Wii 2.0 with hard drive?

I don't agree that kids in the suburbs aren't exposed to an "anti-education" culture. It might not be a pervasive there (not to mention as pervasive in the adults there; inner city parents have a horrible anti-education attitude), but they are exposed to it through their peers. It's a society-wide problem in the U.S. It's easy to see when you compare it to Japan. If you read some translated Manga, you can see that the girls actually are interested in boys with good grades there, not just the big dumb jock.

Anyway, people have to want to learn. The drive isn't there any more for a good number of people in the U.S.

  12. Teachers Colleges are not teaching technology on Is Early Childhood Education Technology Moving Backwards? · · Score: 3, Insightful

During the summer I work around many education majors, and I can tell you that teachers are not being taught anything about technology in teaching programs. Most times they have less technical skills than your average college students. They can't work their ipods or simple digital cameras and they often have trouble using basic web sites to fill in web forms. It's all anecdotal, but I see the same thing year after year and I've seen it even going back to my own teachers in the 1980s.

Anyway, I am apt to agree with other comments in this thread. I am for tech in the classroom, but it's not going to do any good with the teachers we are putting out in the field. The best and brightest don't go into elementary education, and right now the jobs aren't there. We need tech education for our kids to succeed, but there will have to be some other fundamental fixes made before that curriculum is even possible.

Not everyone feels the need to play a state of the art first person shooter, but there are quite a lot of people who like to sit down for the occasional party game or session of Guitar Hero. I think a lot of the long time, hard core gamers hate it that the plebeians are starting to walk on their turf.

There are many for profits I hope succeed. I want the bad ones (and there are MANY types of bad companies) to fail. I also want companies to play fairly and not use sticks like "intellectual property" to shut other (usually smaller) businesses and individuals down.

I believe that for applications that many, many people use (OS, Office, web technologies, etc) Free software is the way to go because it is OPEN and it allows everyone to interact. There are many pieces of software that are more limited (like for a small specific industry) that wouldn't get built if it wasn't for For Profit companies because it takes a lot of interest to get an Open Source product off the ground and a big pool of potential users and developers. There has to be motivation somewhere. I think Linux works because of a huge amount of interest and people that need it. I think if you are one of 5 businesses in the world that make a certain type of widget, however, then you are not going to get Open Source to help you on your very specific software need and that's a good fit for a for profit company.

Like I said, it's been a couple of years now, and when we tried it what basically killed the whole thing is its problem doing mail merges. Arguably it had a BETTER interface to databases than any office product, but the problem is that everyone here has no technical inclination except for me and it requires thought. Plus back in version 2 it was buggy and it wouldn't match up formatting correctly. At lot of the research I did at the time pretty much seemed to indicate that the oo.org staff didn't care much about getting mail merges to work and it wasn't much a priority.

Maybe someone here can bring me up to date on any progress in this area. I hope that at some point oo.org can provide a really simple mail merge "wizard" (I hate that term) that works with spreadsheets that the plebeians can understand along with a database interface that can give programs like Crystal Reports a run for its money...

My thinking went this way about 3-4 years ago. After hearing a poor single mom on CNN upset and claiming her biggest fear in life was terrorism, I started to believe that any time a regular citizen has to even THINK about terrorism it is a tiny failure in government. It's like like worrying about other murders or your car being stolen is a failure in government. They are supposed to be there to protect your person. The fact that government has to harp on it's constantly to gain power is BIG failure of government, and our gullibility when it comes to terrorism is a failure in ourselves as a nation.
