Well unfortunately it comes down to how you can monitize OSS. 1. Selling media: most software today doesn’t have media. So no more selling CD or Tapes. 2. Consulting services: That means the product needs to sufficiently complex and hard to use that you need specialists to figure it out. 3. Grant/Donations: The product will need to be popular enough to get the interest and numbers. 4. Hobbie: Don’t expect wide usage for long because it will only get updated on what is fun and once the product isn’t fun it will die.
Much of the software just can’t be done as OSS because software development is not cheap nor is it really fun. We need to pay people to suffer to get the product out.
Just stay out of silicon valley. STEM is still allows rewarding careers. However the work that is in real need isn't the high press fancy job at Google. But the guy fixing and improving processes at the local manufacturer, hospital or bank. SV tries to attract talent away from these real job by using Cult reasoning, by making the initial switch from College Life to work life nearly seamless. Which isn't bad, but then you get stuck there and you will be stuck in SV for about 10 years then you are too old to work there anymore and kicked out to the rest of the world with no assets to live off of.
That guy who does STEM work for the non-tech company is the guy who has a home, family and a car, the $75,000 a year would be enough to live off of and prosper. With the freedom to leave a job and move to a different area all together if needed, as you can sell your home and pack up your car and move to wherever.
Not California, but Silicon Valley. It turned from an incubator of creative ideas and new technology, to a commune where you are suppose to all think alike. Nearly every city has a spot for technology and plenty of jobs, much of them pay almost as well as SV, but the cost of living is much lower and you can live like a human being and not a caged animal.
Sure your work probably wont be on display on national TV, however you probably didn't get credit for it anyways. But you get to work on new and interesting stuff, and a better life, plus in these cities they will actually try to bend backward to accommodate your needs, as you are the only Middle Class jobs left.
That is assuming that you are a people person. For the introvert spending a day in an open office, having to go to a living center where you still need to interact with a bunch of people to take advantage of these shared services. Sounds like hell to me.
This is why I became a morning person. I would wake up at 5:00 am in college just so I can lock myself in the computer lab where there would be no one there at that time, even during a deadline. And I can just sit there do my work alone with just my thoughts, giving myself a good recharge time to face the day.
Actually this seems like moving back to a feudal system. Sure we get fancy adult dorms now. Then they will be company owned housing, then to a point where an entire community will be owned by the company. Where it will take care of all your needs, just as long as you work for them. They will just deduct all the expenses out of your paycheck, so you have nothing less to save, because using the company housing, you have access to bunch of services, that you may not use or want, but are paying for it anyways. So not having extra money to be socially mobile, you will be stuck in this housing, and forced to work for the company at their terms, or be homeless.
Why can’t Arizona feed itself without importing food from other states. The US is the 3rd / 4th largest country having a wide range of resources, so we are not fighting over access to clean water, and food because we have the space to do such.
These countries who bring there students to the US are often their best and brightest. Then a percentage of them will stay here so we have more of the best and brightest paying taxes and contributing to our society. The bulk that goes back to their home country will know about American values and have a better understanding of us and would be less likely to blindly hate us, and being the best and brightest they may get into a position of power and their experience with the US for the most part would affect our relationship with them.
Foreign students are a net positive. We are not diverse enough as we keep on doing things the same way because it didn’t fail yet.
Often these kids will be on a big set of grants. Either from the college to get the best and brightest. Or from their parents government to give these kids a top education so they come back as the best and brightest. Now say 80% return to their home it is a benefit for the home country and the 20% that stays in the US is a benefit to us. And those who returned to the home country they returned with a better understanding on what America is and see us beyond what the nation will have us portrayed as, for good or for bad.
You are assuming that the culture had followed the same technology progression we have. Lets assume there is a civilization that is on par with us. However there was emphasis 2 hundred years ago, on glass production vs metal. So other then radio communication they may have an optical communication infrastructure. With a massive fiber-optic infrastructure, and laser based transmitters to cross areas where a wired connection may not be practical. They may be just a generation into radio communication, technology. where they will be sending binary data, and not thinking about all the stuff needed to send voice, and haven't figured out how to narrow the bandwidth to AM/FM bands. So our radio communication will just reach blind ears, with perhaps why a few bits in their test experiment is getting lost.
For a teenager a few months is a long time for them. But I will argue that most teenagers don't have real friends, what they call their friends are acquaintances of safety, they may evolve into real friends later in their life. But in these areas of Acquaintances if you can do something to increase your status with them then chances are you will be able to do things that you want vs what they want. Teenager friends groups are very hierarchical almost lineally. If the Alpha is missing from the group the Beta will take their spot without any though. The person at the end while may not be abused from their friend group, are usually left to follow and just be there, and if there is a conflict they will be the first to go. Happiness normally is the core feeling when you are safe. If having that iPhone puts you well in the safe area of their social circle, thus will make them feel happy, vs not having one which may put them lower in their friend hierarchy which means they are less safe.
For the mature adult, Having or not having an iPhone doesn't really create the same sense of happiness. It is more about the utility of it vs. the cost. The utility may help improve your overall safeness, being able to do your work on the phone to keep you from getting fired, or helping you get promoted, vs the $1000 which you could use towards other things which will help you make you feel happy.
The idea of Value does get in the way of happiness, however it part of life, there isn't enough resources to get everything we want and when we want it. We will need to prioritize on what we want and what we are willing to pay for it. My phone is 3 years old, its battery lasts only a few hours with moderate use... I don't like the idea of being without a phone so I will need to get an other phone. Should I spend $100 and get a new battery, only to have the phone no longer be supported in a year, and go with the hassle of getting it replaced and installed. Should I spend $500 and by a newer but not top of the line, and get 3 more years of service out of it. Should I spend $1000 and get the newest and get a good 4 years out of it.
In terms of dollars, you should just keep on replacing the battery and deal with it being out of support. Getting the state of the art is actually the worst that you can pick in terms of dollars, however you have a year of running thing faster then they were made for, 2 years of on par design, and a year where things run slowly. Having nice things is fun, and it feels good. Is it worth it, is a personal choice.
They are a lot of really stupid people with high IQ. Many use the fact that they know they have a High IQ to stop trying to learn new information because they got a number that said that they are smart. Also there is experience that will come into play, which has a larger factor for someone with an IQ 100 vs an IQ of 120 their experience, education and adaptability will come into play and override a raw ability to learn and information.
If they are genetic traits toward IQ, I expect it would be quite complex not just a smart gene. However if found, it would make more sense to treat people with mental disabilities with an IQ under 60 so they can process information at a rate where they can be a productive citizen. Trying to boost a person with an IQ of 90 to say an IQ of 130 probably wouldn't have a real effect on society, as other factors could affect their lives.
It would depend if they were in rural or urban areas. In rural areas it may be tricky for many because they will have to grow their own food. But if you took people from the 1600 and teleported then in the middle of nowhere with no supplies they would die out too.
If we took people from today give them a few months of supplies. Chances are if teleported to the 1600 they would be able to survive.
In an urban environment we would just need to find a job that would be a good match to our future skills.
Which brings up the point. I am not suggesting that the $1000 iPhone is the best value. Because Value is very personal. There is value in impressing your friends, especially if you are a teenager, where their social status is very important to them, if they have the fancy iPhone X while their friends have the less impressive iPhone 8. It puts them one notch in their social status, because they have the better thing. Now if their friends were solid Android Users, the iPhone would outcast them, but if they had a shiny Note 8 then that would have more value. When I was that age, Shoes were the status symbol (Nike being the top brand, then Rebox, then Adieus being a distant third ), even though as a kid, the advantage of having a shoe that is over $100 isn't much over a shoe that is about $20 however as a kid, your daily life was based on what Shoe you had, and it was important.
For the elderly, it isn't as much about status, but similarity. As you get older you have an instinct to get involved with like people. Hence all the old ladies in church events, even though when they were younger they weren't actively involved in the church. Or the guy who was a hippy as a teenager, is now a stout conservative afraid of these people with off skin colors. Getting an iPad because others in their group has an iPad is important not as a status symbol, but as a way to prevent them from seeming like they are not in that group.
For the Middle adults 25-65 they more or less are empowered to make what ever decision with less consequences of what others think, so the decision to get an an iPhone vs a Samsung Note, may be based if they already have a ton of paid apps they don't want to purchase again, what is supported in their work environment, or what features they really want or need. Because at this age, we are able to be independent without the need to be protected by your parents or your peers.
That is true for now... However with our new isolationist stance, if prolonged, it would mean our cultural export will diminish. The Glamour of American media, is because of the change of it over time, and the attempt to show how America should be, vs what it actually is. As we keep isolated our view of ourselves will become more and more delusional, without the rest of the world being able to keep us honest.
Black Friday is for the extroverts, who wants to feel the rush of the season hit them like a brick, be around people and come up with what seems to be interesting stories to tell people.
Still even before the days of online shopping, a lot of people would do their shopping after a couple of weeks after black Friday where the stock has been replenished, and the crowds are more festive, and less aggressive.
I think part of the problem today, is that the stores have been aggressive in their sales and marketing, so people feel like they will need to rush in and purchase before it is sold out and the deal is no longer available, so this had changed from a time of high volume sales, to an aggressive competition to win the shopping game and get the best deal ever.
Because the #1 American sin is to purchase something that isn't the best value. Why do you think people are so angry at the $1000 iPhone, it is because they want it or something similar to it, but cannot justify the cost especially compared to its competition, they can afford it, but it isn't the best deal. And if they get it then they have made a bad purchasing decision. Which is really Bad! Even though the product may bring enjoyment to their lives for a good deal of time.
Some christian cultures, celibate Christmas on January 6th, as it is traditionally considered the Epiphany (the time where the 3 Magi had offered the gifts of Gold, Incense and Muir) so the aspect of sharing gifts during this time seems more appropriate.
There is also confusing religion with the will of the religious rulers and its followers who don't try to comprehend the message.
In short people are jerks and will be jerks no matter what faith or lack of they have.
There really isn't much difference in Kill all the people who disagree with me because God is on my side, vs Kill all the people who disagree with me because there is No God so I will not suffer any sort of afterlife punishment.
The question is what information are they taking. Google may pull my location to give me search results that are local. Other browsers may be just tracking the MAC of my device and based on my viewing habits it will determine if I am a valued citizen or not.
So it isn’t what they are collecting but how they are using it. I am not giving google a free pass. One click on something political divisive has me flagged as hey take a look at all this content based on the political belief each more insane then the previous.
Currently google thinks I have a strong anti-Mormon stance because I saw a kinda funny video making fun of Mormons. Previously I got flooded with options about anti-feminists stances. Because I watch someone’s commentary which I found lacking explaining how boy students were being left behind academically.
Such trends do worry me, just because I have a passing interest in a topic to have me flagged as someone with sting believe in that area is worrisome.
You run this program, you see a CPU Core peaking. The computer is putting all its effort into doing something that you wouldn't even notice after the screen gets full.
So it is an easy push to villify them. Those godless Democrats are trying to push an atheist addenda source with those few people who happen to be democrats and push an atheist adgenda.
Those idiot republicans who are trying to bring the country back a century. Reference by those few people pushing a racist agenda who have red trump hats.
If you are on the side of the Democrats you may be a god fearing individual and you realize that these people are not representative of you but a subset group.
If you are a Republican however you are very inclusive and tolerant, you see the racist as not representative of you and the republicans on whole.
We see the news headlines liberals/conservatives are doing something you don’t like. Not a subset of the group is doing something you don’t like. So it just reinforces tribalism tendencies that we have and bypass common sense and you make sure those other guys don’t get power, because they are far more dangerous then your side is.
AI don’t have instinct that people have. Feral people will still walk on two legs, they will come up with some forms of commication, and form some sort of social code. There are some aspects that make us uniquely human that AI don’t have.

You can use open source software for just as much spying and lack of privacy.
How we license a product doesn’t dictate what it does or how it is used.

No that wasn’t my argument at all.
Why can’t Arizona feed itself without importing food from other states.

The former.
Because my kid will be the target of the violence and discrimination regardless of their actions.
Most countries have these problems too. Often far worse then these viral videos.
That is wrong and you are stupid to think that.
These countries who bring there students to the US are often their best and brightest. Then a percentage of them will stay here so we have more of the best and brightest paying taxes and contributing to our society.
