It is a lot like No Trespassing signs. There is nothing stopping someone from trespassing, however if they get injured on their property, they can at least show the court that they at least gave some warning not to go there, and they shouldn't be responsible for damages.
Is this a legal silver bullet? No not at all, but at least it shows some sort of attempt on having a case.
I guess you could just download them by login name. And then match it locally. Still bad, but not as bad as sending up your credentials to Google and trust they will be doing the right thing with them.
Of course... I wonder if you could use it to gain access to someone elses account who has been hacked... Still a bad idea.
Yes, but it was a pariody of Surge from Coca Cola. A popular drink during the late 1990's with a high caffeine and sugar amount, meant to exceed Mountain Due. It was rather addictive to the EXTREME!!!!!!11!! culture of the time. Man the 1990's was such a miserable era, when I take off my nostalgia glasses.
Big Companies, often have a lot of talking heads and big Egos. A large company is very productive when all the parts run smoothly, however when there is a problem, things go out of wack, and require business agility more prevalent with smaller companies.
It is surprising when a big company can handle a problem rather quickly. Because there are often so many checks and balances to prevent problems, that having to deal with them isn't dealt well.
Now Apple may had policy and procedures for this type of problem, but a lot of companies may not, because we cannot have a policy and procedure for all problems.
1. We have had crappy code for generations now. It is up to the compiler/interpreter to handle it better. Just as long as writing code is open to anyone, there is going to be crappy coding. We could try to make certified licensed fully credentialed coders, but I only see this cutting down on creativity in coding and what could be coded. For every 100 times we see crap code, there will be 1 time there would be ingenious code that would be caught by this tool, and basically prevent innovation. If IE 6 or Firefox 1 had this feature a decade ago, would we have tools like Google Maps, Gmail, or even giving suggestions based on what you are typing. Back then these were big and clunky JavaScript code, in a time where JavaScript was only for form validation.
2. I cannot disagree with you there. You need a lot of experience to know when some code is threaded and other is serial. Lack of a normal sleep command, and its workaround requires bizarre threaded calls. It is also a pain to try to explain how AJAX works, where sometimes I really want it synchronous.
But you can not control which App is playing and when. The Volume control on the Amstrad was fine, because it was an DOS based 8086 CPU with 512k of RAM, it will only run one app at once.
However we now have many apps running at once, and they call could be making noises. So the volume control is less useful. Because some noises we want to keep and others we want to toss.
What would happen if this was your code? Perhaps the internal Apple treatment of engineers is better then the general industry. But normally when there is a problem, the thumb is pressed down on the engineers. Often with the Stupid question on why was this flaw made that way, and why wasn't it caught (and not part of the root cause, but when we have to rush to fix the solution). Secondly, I expect a degree of pride you place in your work, to have your work publicly pointed out as a security problem, will probably hurt a little on the inside. Normally the engineers are now worried, because their job is now being interrupted by executives over your shoulder, forcing you to behave where you really need to be grumpy and crude, so you can get the job done (Often when people are in deep thought, their manners are first to go, hence why professional thinking people are often rather rude and tough to work with while on the job).
It is a German Company. Germans are Good Engineers. Engineers are really bad programmers. Obvious trolling aside....
Like most commercial software products (built anywhere in the world) business owners wants to get the product out the door as fast as possible. And will often rush to release the prototype software as the full live feature. I know by experience that it is very tough to convince executives that while your prototype works and shows off all the features, it will take a few month more of development to get it ready for release, not to add features, but get it to work faster, fix the holes that were created for debugging reasons, and setup hooks for new features and expansion that is planned or expected. As far as the Executive is concerned it is a product you can sell now, and fix later. The sooner you can get the product to the market that better.
What laws did he break. And will the victim of the crime press charges? Hacking itself isn't illegal, nor is stumbling on a security flaw. Crossing the line is using this security flaw to spy, or undo damage onto others.
Actually this makes an interesting case study in crisis management. For a problem like there there were many changes for Apple to flub the response and make it worse, however for the most part they handled it professionally (not perfectly). A major security flaw was found, in one of their new features that they were trying to push out as the next big thing. Having this exposed is painful to a company. 1. It hurts them in Marketing 2. It hurts in in PR 3. Their engineers are worried 4. Management is worried
This creates a lot of emotion within the company, emotion often will lead to brash decisions that will just make things work. (Think Steve Jobs "Your Holding it Wrong" on the iPhone 4 loosing connection when a left handed person hold the phone in a particular way.)
However once Apple spotted the reported flaw, and scoped out how bad it was (This seemed to take too long due to bad public bug reporting). They Stopped the service, and put a PR message out stating the problem and why they stopped it. They took the embarrassment of a flaw, to make sure their customer base would be safe. Engineers are now working on a fix. Now Apple management is reaching out to the person who found the bug and rewarded them, also it appears they are trying to make bug reporting more streamlined, to prevent it being public for a week.
I have seen other times when a security flaw is discovered a company would go into panic protected mode. Try to ignore the problem as long as it could, Actively hide or remove any communication about the problem to the public. Find legal action on the more vocal people pointing out the problem. And using PR and Marketing to try to white wash the the problem, while real people are getting hurt. Then finally the fix would be in their quarterly patch (which would probably break other things).
Apple is one of the largest for profit publicly traded companies, during a period of a record slowdown in sales, and with crazy variance in stock price. I am actually surprised on how well Apple is handling this problem. I know this is Slashdot and we are suppose to Hate Apple after 2008, and all things Apple. And a bunch of us are developers/administrators who never had a security hole (exposed), so we all think we are just that good at our job and it is easy to admonish a company for a security flaw. However a security flaw can happen from a misstep anywhere during the product life cycle development, and maintenance. Now the question you should ask yourself, if a major flaw was found what would you do? And how would your peers honestly respond to your action?
Audio on PC's have always been problematic. At least on my old Amstrad 1512 it had a volume on the PC Speaker. But in general now with multi-tasking apps. I wish I could really control how audio works on them. Mute this App, Allow App to play if focused, Allow App to play on background.
Almost how nVidia does this on Windows you can tell which app to use the more advanced card. Allow for performance Apps to run fast, and others to run slower, because that was good enough.
Well Nintendo, seems to be always dropping it personal community network system and making a new one for every hardware upgrade, then turning it off after a year or so.
Wii No longer can play Mario Cart Wii online. Wii-U I am now welcomed by the default connection, and real traffic.
I don't think Nintendo neally gets online game communities. And I bet they would be happy to get Microsoft to do it for them. Perhaps Nintendo, can use the extra resources to boost the specs in their gaming consoles to be closer to what the others have.
Except for the fact I don't know anyone personally who has a Play Station. That and looking at the Titles available, I cannot find anything that really sparks my interest. To be fair, I have a Wii-U and usually just me and my wife play monopoly on it.
While not a big fan of Microsoft, it would be nice to buy a game for what ever platform I have/want and be able to play it with other players even though they are not using my platform of choice.
What makes them to believe that exactly? Racial bias from AI has been shone in the past, because it is based off of data from racial biases. Where/what is their proof/evidence for such thing can really happen? Racial biases have been shown in resume filtering programs. The "deep learning" systems, found that factors such as a name or address was corralled with low employment chances, so it rejected the resumes.
There is crime in wealthy neighborhoods as well. Often more serious crimes. But it often goes under Kids will be Kids, while a minority will be treated more harshly and the police would not just scare off some kids, but track them down and arrest them. Poor neighborhoods are also more closely packed together. Putting more people together causes more conflict, and also it is easier to "police" as you don't need to travel far to find someone breaking some law.
Police need to find ways to stop and deescalate the problems before a crime happens. Yes they should be able to police anywhere, however they need to be aware of their own bias, and make sure they are thinking and working carefully to make sure their gut feelings are not the wrong one.
"BLA BLA BLA Police have a tough job, adding something to make them think will only delay a life and death moment..." Someone shouldn't go into policing, as a quick power rush, and their training should be more complete for them to make better quick decisions, and insure their biases are well controlled.
In terms of morals, Net Positive and Net Negative isn't good enough. How we handle justice in a society is a strong indication of our real morals as a society. It is really easy to justify immoral cruelty, if there is a strong net benefit. But it isn't the right thing to do. Even if nicer way of doing things has less of a net benefit, it is probably the better more moral thing to do.
The big problem as you had stated the true-net value isn't obvious and may not be calculated for a long time. There is only so much oppression a group can handle, and also if a group isn't allowed to be shared the benefits of society, they will not follow the rules of that society, and make their own sub groups, thus for a program to help identify crime, would find a stronger correlation to that area.
This isn't about Republicans, but the Trump Administration seems to be filled with people who's default stance is about making rules that tries to be cruel to people. I am unsure if it is because they are just so out of touch with reality and the "Rich Guy" solution of the problem seems so obvious, that they just don't understand how a lot of people just do not have the upfront money, or personal power to follow these solutions. Or they just want to be actively cruel to anyone who just doesn't fully support and love them.
There are things that would require understand of the words before deicing to act. Not all legal decisions are contractual. Lets use the old trope of the Miranda rights, yes the police doesn't need to give the speech, and you won't give a free pass just because they arrested you without it. However if given, and Google Transcribe came up with something wrong, then use made your decision based on the bad transcription, how would that play out in court. "You have the right to remember sentences. Any thing for sale can be used used against you in a court of law..."
The slow down in population especially in "1st world nations" is due to many factors which are not environmental, or resource base. * The availability of cheap, safe and effective birth control. * The microeconomics costs in having a child.
Currently our economic model, while on the large scale more population is better for the economy on the whole. It is a hindrance to the family, as a child is expensive and can set a middle class family back years in terms of money. This combined with birth control has turned raising a child as something almost considered a Hobby for a lot of people. In rural countries, a child become a member of your workforce, thus becomes an economic strength to your family.
I can see the population dropping for a while, but as we are starting to see in ageing countries like Japan and France, additional intensives to try to increase child birth.
In terms of resources, our technology to increase output still seems to be able to keep up with growth. Sure we get some Hippy dippy stuff with people complaining about GMO, preservatives, and radiation treatment. But we have the ability to feed the world for a while.
If Google actually cares about helping people, and not just using it as a Cash grab to get a group of people to switch to Google. I don't see why Google cannot release an iOS app. Google and Microsoft does have a set of Apps for iOS as well as for Android. The real question goes into how Google expect to monetize the technology.
Well it depends. If Google cannot find a way to monetize it, it will just say locked up as an unused patent, in their R&D Department. Then you get question on how well it will transcribe for you. Would it transcribe data well enough for a Hearing Impaired person to make sound legal decisions from its transcriptions. Also depending on how Google monetizes it, there can be significant privacy and security concerns around it.
It seems by tone of your post, you have a hard time differentiating socialism from communism. Socialism welcomes a free market, however will get involved if something goes too far, or does more harm then good. Compared to Communism, which Government controls the business, in all aspects.
With the recent government shutdown, the the closing of the FDA. New types of Beer couldn't be released, and new drugs cannot be approved. In essence putting a hold on economic growth. Because the FDA, FCC, SCC... While not perfect, has the goal of doing more good then harm, and make sure free trade, doesn't devolve into snake oil sales.
The issue is, local pollution is more manageable, then global climate change, where the CO2 is a global problem. What makes it more insidious, is that CO2 isn't pollution that you can see or smell, also itself doesn't have that much of a negative effect on your health.
The solution to smog pollution is dilution. So they just move these polluting sources to someone else back yard, we call it offering new jobs, in poor areas. So the rich get all the value without the negative effect.
I think UK is a good model in showing that moving to cleaner energy sources doesn't need to wreck havoc to the economy like it is often argued.
So lighting the tracks on fire, is a standard way of solving frozen tracks... While we all love to see fire, and it often an interments of destruction, a controlled fire, has its benefits too.
