  1. The local stations have to pay for the radio infrastructure and NPR fees just for NPR to tell them to listen elsewhere isn't really at good of a deal.
Last year there was some buzz about getting you cell phones to be enabled to play FM radio. Apparently that got shoved under some carpet. Do techies just seem to prefer audio that takes a lot of extra power to listen too?

  2. I would like to understand the data in more detail.
There are different sectors where we have programmers.
If you are a Programmer in a Not-for-Profit or Government agency (where I have noticed a higher amount of woman programmers) those areas pay less then working for a high demand tech company (which have more males). However the NFP and government tend to be more stable jobs with better benefits.

Having seen a company's recruiters feeds for different organizations I notice there are a Lot more woman applying for programming jobs in NFP and Government jobs. While tech companies have almost all men.

1980's Mainframes were expensive computers, most organizations could normally afford one, and they write all kinds of software on them, from managing their billing to controlling the factory. If you remove one component you can cause all others to have the same problem. Trying to fix the infrastructure will cost millions. For organizations that support the public, usually are under tight budget anyways so fixing them is very difficult.

I find that to be a lame excuse for things not working. It is excusing the problem that BSD doesn't have the markets interest that Linux and Windows has in order for a diverse set of drivers to be made for a wide range of Systems.

Most system with "Crap Hardware" will work perfectly well on other os for years and last well beyond the useful life of the device. Unless you want to build your PC by yourself (something much more difficult if you want a Laptop) you normally need to deal with what the vendor gives you in terms of hardware. Being that most vendors really don't care about making a FreeBSD based Desktop solution you will not find too many that meet this requirement fully, and will undoubtedly cheap out on some particular part so you will feel good at getting such a device below $1,000 vs above. Where on Windows and Linux you wouldn't really notice as it will be detected and works, at least partially. While BSD it will just fail to recognize the device.

I am not basing BSD Systems, I actually love working on them when the hardware works with them. However for Personal Computing they suck, because they have this elitist attitude towards hardware.

The biggest problem with IT workers is that they feel that their work and effort is not being recognized, and their pay and benefits are not being proportional to the effort and intelligence put in.
Unions will not fix that problem, but hinder it, as the top employee will be treated the same as the lazy and/or inadequate employee. As well Unions tend to have a wider agenda and will expand to beyond just your field, and to a wider scope. When it comes to negotiations they will agree on such things such as laying off the few high salary people in order to get twice as many cheaper employees, as they will bring in more money for dues.
Also with a Union shop, you learn to keep your mouth shut for any ideas that may be against the union, otherwise you are in trouble.

I have worked in unioned and non-unioned shops. Unions make sense for blue-collar jobs, because such jobs easily replaceable and are open to abuse towards a persons health and safety.
Government/Teaching jobs also does make sense for Unions because of the fickle nature of elected officials who are in charge, who may want to fire a teacher for failing the Football star so he can't win the big game. Or having the son of a member of the house of representative in detention for abusing an other student.
White-Collar jobs such as IT have much less health and safety concerns, and it is expensive to replace a good IT worker. Also most companies really fail miserably when they try to outsource, and in time they bring back local workers. Also IT workers can often find jobs in less time then blue collar workers.
I was Laid off in 2008, I was able to get an other job rather quickly.
