    Being that a dropped USB drive, is a rather expensive way to to try to infect a random PC. Unless you do so in some sort of work area, where you are hoping that the guy will do this to his work PC, so you can get onto the corporate network.
    But if a guy picks it up and plugs it into his PC. You are spending a lot of money for little value.

    However if you found someone's USB drive, you may be able to get valuable info from that and use it to your advantage, if you were of such a bad person to do so.

    In terms of economics, the risk/cost that you would face from putting in an untrusted usb is much less than the potential reward from doing so. So it isn't necessarily people just being stupid.

    There is value in the brand name (Good Will), Personal Info for a huge user base. A lot of this stuff allows them to borrow money much easier.

    However Turnover is very expensive to an institution. So preventing turnover is probably worth the cost of a 20 week paid time off.

    If it out of Warranty, it means you can still use it. However they are not responsible after that period for any defects in the product. This is true with software.
    So if I have software that is out of Warranty, I can still use it, however if there is a security flaw, or problem with it, it would be fair of me to not expect the company to give me a free patch, or upgrade.

    Now if I purchased the product via a contract, or as a service, once my term period of service has ended, it would be fair game for the company to cancel the service, if they no longer want to continue.

    In terms of sensitive data, I wouldn't trust a VPN over wi-fi for this level of security. Chances are Wi-Fi can be used with standard unclassified, and even medium security type of information. There is a lot of standard boring work going on too. It isn't all Top Secret huge decisions going across. A lot of it would be things like requesting time off from work, making sure the payroll is done, setting up an appointment for a weekly meeting with others.... That stuff VPN over Wi-Fi would be good enough. If someone would do the effort in hacking the VPN the value of the data would be rather minimal. I expect real secure data is still under a closed wired network.
    If they were smart, there wouldn't be a connection to the internet, however my experience probably will say otherwise.

    Never mind why 2 or 3 time a week when I do an apt-get upgrade there are new patches to apply. Because that is Linux and we get fixes to problems.

    For me is wasn't the GNU but the free as in cost part. Getting an OS that works like a $1000+ OS was a big deal.
    The traditional Unix systems had (and still have some) concerns about ownership, so FreeBSD could be canceled, or forced you to pay.

    Linux was one of the few Unix Like OS's that worked on PC hardware.
    It's initial timing was good too. Windows 3.11 was around for way too long. What was to be windows 95 was being delayed. And a lot of people were still big on command line interfaces. But wanted 32bit and multi-tasking.

    Then when Windows 95 was released, It failed on its promises which in my opinion finally met the requirements in Windows 7

    Bah there no real science behind that. it is all part of the Liberal Agenda for them to take over our lives.
    Some days it says light for over 16 hours a day, while other times is barely 8 hours of light. There are reports that some people have days that go by of all darkness and sometimes days of all light. How can you make sense of such chaos, to make a general statement like that.
    Night and Day is a myth.

    I always found it rather odd how culturally we treat Jewish people as a Race and a Religion.
    You can be a former Jew, by disallowing the religion. However if you treat it as some Racial background, then you can't change it.

    I saw a larger multi-touch monitor (the biggest expense) for about 4grand. Then you just hook it up to a PC and you are all set. Granted it isn't as fancy as an all in one... However my experience with these things, people often will want to plug in their laptops for their presentations. Not use someone else's computer

    However history also shows the product that most VC had disregarded as non-profitable but turned out to be a big hit. And the one crazy guy who invested in it, made out like a bandit.

    Part of the problem is it is very difficult to tell a stupid idea from a big hit a lot of the time. A lot of of the easy succesfully companies are solving problems that have already been solved, because the problem has been pointed out and are just solving them in a slightly different way, meaning it may interest some people. However the big hits solve a problem that people don't realize they have until the see the product. Before the iPhone, we were happy with our Cell phones, and Blackberries. Having a mobile version of the internet seemed rational for the small screens and limited input options.
    However Apple offered a phone with a full web browser, and full email, and lot of the components we were use to on a computer, and the multi-touch display allowed comfortable interfacing with the features. It solved problems that we didn't really knew that we had.

    Granted Apple was already a well established company sailing off the iPod success.

  16. I expect they would need to upgrade their video card a bit. 4k Video vs 4k gaming is rather different in terms of hardware needs.
    Video can be buffered, compressed for optimal performance. Video Games being dynamic and real time, not so much time to buffer display.

    I am sure a firmware patch could be used to enable it, and I expect you may see improvements in many games, but their may be a few that you will see problems because it would require some additional resources.

    Not even that just tilt the screen a few degrees. I have bigger problems with LCD Matted on my car dashboard, then I ever had with my phone.
    I expect the poster was trying to troll for CRT based cell phones or something.

    Chances are this didn't get recorded in history due to lack of marketing.
    Probably due to the fact neither side had gained an advantage they needed so no victor to make the history.

    I mean just think of the Korean war? If it weren't for the popular TV show M.A.S.H it probably would be really the forgotten war. And that is something that happened within people's lifetimes.

    I have Ubuntu 15.10 on my Lenovo Thinkpad X that has a multi-touch display and can be converted to a tablet.
    However I rarely ever do this because Ubuntu touch display defaults in general suck. I am not apt to change from the defaults because most of the time I want to use it like a desktop, this model is too old (big and bulky) to really be used as a tablet. However Ubuntu at its current state just sucked on tablet mode.

    One thing I never got about Most SQL databases is the use of the single quote as its primary string deliminator. Storing names is an extremely common tasks and names like O'Connor are often cause problems...
    However it could be stated that because of that it forces people to clean their syntax earlier in the process to prevent SQL injection. Unless the software producer gets lazy and say no special characters.

    The problem with these polls is how they are worded.
    I don't see conflict in Darwin's theory, and the idea that God may be influencing the process. Now you cannot make a scientific theroy saying that God is guiding it. Because God being considered a supernatural entity cannot be proved or disproved by science, as it would be an non-measurable factor. And saying in science that God is controlling it is just lazy approach to stop doing real science. But Darwinism theory is strongly predicated by a degree of luck.
    An Animal happened to have the correct gene mutation that will give it an advantage. That same mutation will not hinder its chances for sexual reproduction.
    Such a trait happens to be better for the environment. There is a lot of luck and random stuff going on. While we can science science can't say this is caused by God, because there is No evidence for this. This doesn't stop someone to personally believe such random factors are being determined or predetermined by some other supernatural intelligence.

    Slashdot is a bit different then other social media.
    While they may be a few big names out there, the most of us, even ones with max karma, are really just a few words in the static. Most of us really know this on Slashdot.
    No matter how insightful your post is, or qualified you are, it may get a lot of attention for about an hour, then shoved away as an old new article. However the attention is directed at your comment, not as much as yourself.
    I am not expecting results from future posts stating that Jellomizer guy, his views are not consistent, or look he trolled an article last month, obviously his statement now is false.

    Social media sites like Facebook, it is far more personal, if you are a big poster with a large following you are seen as yourself and are judged on the whole about your personality. Such as that Guy who keeps on posting Left/Right leaning political posts at the point of nausea. Or the person who is always saying how everything in his life is bad. On social media, you are judged as a person, while on Slashdot, your content is judged on its own.

    You cannot have a steady job as a Coder or Programmer in the United States. You will end up as just an expensive worker bee. You need to widen your skills across the organization. Most of the time they may call you a programmer, but need a consultant, someone who can look at what they are doing and come up with solutions. Understand their business and find ways to make it better or more efficient. If you just want to sit there and wait for your next program you will need to make, chances are you may be next on the chopping block.
    Because.
    1. They are cheaper programmers out there.
    2. The company is not benefiting from the technology
    3. Your skills are not being directed towards the need of the organization.

    Just by focusing on one job, coding, your are making yourself vulnerable, because you are not the type of employee you want to keep, but someone they either need at the moment, or can't find a better alternative.

    BTW:The above advice isn't 100% for a solid steady job, but it helps to make sure you are more valuable to the institution and are less likely to let you go.

    I never really got the idea of the "Darwin" Fish.
    Because Darwinism is opposite of christianity?
    While many major Christian religions fully accept the theory of evolution. Also the symbol of the fish symbol was meant because Jesus called to the disciples where were Fishermen to be Fishers of Men.

    Now you don't need to believe in the religion, but if you are going to protest some subset of a religion you probably should do it is a better way.

    I expect it is a point of optimization.
    While VC++ may have a bunch of bugs, it may be due to over optimization, for faster performance on Windows Platforms.
