However it rarely works for a long time or with a lot of people.
The problem is that we live in a world of scarcity, we can't get all that stuff that we want, or need. The communist system tries to make everything equal, however that means everyone will be living in scarcity, and not really having what they need or want. Because everyone will be wanting, it will open the door for someone(s) to cheat the system and try to get more, once they have more they will hold on to it. And the system begins to fail.
Software like Open Source tends to work better, because there isn't a limit in supply. You can copy share make a copy of the copy and continue on and on. There is no scarcity in the Open Source Model.
No. Not at all, your analogy is horribly flawed. 5 points taken away from your house.
A car and roads have been made to work with each other, they are complements of each other.
A gun doesn't need to shoot a person, for you should hope your gun never does. If you are at a shooting range, the rule is if someone crosses the line everyone stops shooting. Even if the person isn't near your target, but the fact that they are near where you are shooting, you stop.
Well sometimes good idea are just at the wrong time.
Mindcraft was able to use the 3d+Networking aspect to modern games to make it far more popular than it would be at 2d and single player. Kids like to build blocks, but once they are done the like to show it to other people.
Back in the 1980's and 1990's networked multi-player games were hard to come by. As telephone service was rather expensive (Pay $0.10 per call for a local call, long distance charges), and data was slow, then the main game hub system needed some rather expensive equipment to gather and split the data meaning you need to pay a rather hefty for the time fee to play the games. (Think the old Sierra Network).
A while back I came up with an idea Kinda like YouTube/iTunes however at the time most people were limited to a 14.4k modem and downloading and Playing an MP3 would require the PC's full power to decode and play at real time. Good idea, but the technology wasn't there yet.
Our Economy on the whole needs more Apprenticeship like schooling.
Colleges (I think partially due to the GI Bill, for WWII and Vietnam War, combined with trying to dodge the draft) have seem to have taken the near monopoly on Higher Learning after High School. It isn't that College and University education is bad, but it isn't for everyone leaving a gap in labor. As well lowering the value of a College education.
Apprenticeships, vocational training, and other alternate forms of education should be a larger part of our modern economy. A lot of people go into Computer Science, or Computer Engineering degrees to be Programmers and System Admins. Those don't need Degrees they can be learned via an Apprenticeship program. Also not IT jobs but other white collar jobs, like Accounting, Marketing, Sales, Advertising, Management... Doesn't need College degrees but experience and learning from skilled workers.
However the problem was the Baby Boomer created a culture of Cut Throat type of thinking, where if the Apprentice passes the master it is seen as a threat on his job, and the idea of working you way up in an organization is no longer the case, we need to jump from job to job in order to advance in life.
I am not a Gun Owner, but if I were, I don't want to be on a public list to say I am one of "those people". The biggest problem I see is a lack of Gun Education, and proper handling of a firearm. For the most part (Yes they are exceptions) the Kids who grew up with parents with a Gun and were taught how to use a gun, actually tend not to be involved in Gun crimes. Because things like "Never point a gun (doesn't matter if it is loaded or not) at or near a person", "Take the Ammo out when you're done", "Put the gun in a safe place when not in use". After training these things become such a habit, that the idea of using a gun for violence is unthinkable. But Kid often grow up in area and are not taught gun safety, and politics tell people these things are bad, and you are bad if you have on or your parents does. So once the Kid grows up a bit, he sees this gun as a source of power over other people, and not a tool that needs to be respected so he will be far more willing to point it at people and shoot people he is angry at, as he doesn't have the habit of gun safety.
It can look like anything. But it doesn't work like anything. It still works like Linux. With its good and bad.
Linux has shown that it does have growth opportunities for the consumer market. Android has shown this. but the GNU/Linux (what we normally call Linux) is really going to stay more toward high end workstations and servers. But what Android has done was create their own OS not look like other OS's to seem like a cheap ripoff of iOS
Well, if they hate Windows 8 so much, They are going to pay more and go with Apple. Even if they don't have the extra cash they will just buy a lesser price Apple. Or they will just deal with it and use Windows 8.
When Linux Wins the Desktop, is the same day when the Desktop would be irrelevant for the common folk, and companies like Apple and Microsoft would just no longer support that platform.
The desktop will become like how Mainframes are today. Only used by people who have a particular use where they shine, there will still be new systems faster and better... However it will only be by a few companies and sold mostly to businesses.
Ok you hate PHP. But how many other Popular alternatives are out there. JSP Oracle is the bad guy right. ASP Microsoft is the bad guy right. Perl The 1990's called and they want their programming back. Ruby on Rails, good alternative however it will be hard to find replacement programmers. Python, Python is my favorite language, however it isn't that good for web.
If true, then the NSA has a really big security problem. Snowden was a contractor, I could see him getting access to the stuff that he is working on, which would be enough to get him into the trouble he is now. But for him to have access across all areas and departments. There is a serious problem with NSA internal security.
The thing is Windows actually runs better than Linux, for a lot of systems. Linux is good on servers, however for the desktop environment Windows actually runs quite well especially for the Moderate-Moderately Advanced users. Basic Users are fine with Linux. Click the button you open you app. Advanced Users are fine, being able to tweak every little detail. But the middle ground is where Windows Shine. Able to add new hardware that works without hours of googling to find you well recognized brand isn't fully supported so you try some Beta stuff and get the additional hardware to barely work. Having your system perform moderate server tasks, File Sharing, Print Sharing. Is fairly easy in windows. As well there is still a bunch of software that you can buy for windows that isn't avaialbable for Linux. However most GNU apps do have a windows port.
Ever sense XP Windows hasn't been a big crashing systems, I have actually seen Linux Crash more times than Windows over the course of 10 years, but that goes back to the issue of drivers.
Well we do have uses for this stuff beyond Smart Phones, and Tablets.
Think of Kiosks where you have hundreds of people touching these things, and only a few think of whipping it out, and some of these people have more than the bacteria that lives on a normal healthy people but bad ones too.
Health Care would love touch interaction however they are still using a lot of Membrane Buttons for what they are doing because it is better microbial.
Or other technologies.. Say a digital cutting board. It shows you where to place your cuts with your slab of raw meat on it. Then you can just wipe it down.
OSS groups release security fixes, they are applauded for caring about people's safety and security. Microsoft releases security fixes, they are appaled that they would let such a problem exist.
Throwing money at a problem doesn't always fix it. Saying that we don't support a tax raise doesn't mean we are not willing to solve the problems. There are so many thing that wants our 1% taxes. That if we add them all up taxes would be a lot higher. Often what is really needed is a process change, not more money.
Ahh to be young again, and have a strict moral code. Yes I am a sellout but I am glad I did. I still have my lines of what I consider right and wrong. However a lot of the things that use to enrage me as a kid no longer really bother me, as I realize that it just isn't that important on the grand scheme of things.
PC (Windows vs Linux) vs. Mac: So what after 10 years or so I need to buy new software and hardware anyways, I'll choose what I like then.
Open Source: well I no longer have free time to tinker with the source code. So I just get what works, If I need to shell out a few hundred bucks for software so be it, I am a sell out remember, I get paid to do my work so I have money.
Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll: I am married so Sex is out of the picture (in terms of it feeling like I am breaking the rules), Drugs (I am too old to care if they make me look cool or not, so I rather not mess with my body), Rock and Roll I have an iPhone I can listen to any damn music I want.
In summary I am comfortable with myself and my beliefs, I don't feel the need to show people off to make them look stupid, when they are just doing their job. As I see it, the NSA a government job, I get paid to use Powerful computers and make interesting algorithms. I can justify many of the moral imbiguities of saying it is helping more people than they are hurting.
Yes being a sellout give your more time in your life to be a good person.
Like many things their needs to be the correct balance. We need Patients and Copyrights however they need to be sure that they they are fare enough for the content creators to get their due for their work, but not so restrictive that it restricts innovation and free speech.
The thing about 3d is that you need to get it right (enough) before it really gets popular.
The Old 3D movies failed because of the Blue/Red filters really messed with the colors in the movie, once Color movies became more popular the 3d effect was less popular.
The New 3D movies (are better) and seem to be still somewhat popular in the theaters. The Polarized Glasses give you a better view and still get the 3d effect. However, there are still the headache problems, and the movie makers still exaggerating the effect, they are thinking 2d and adding a 3d effect to it.
The 3D TV isn't there yet. People don't watch TV like they do for movies. It is much more distracted, we watch TV, play with the Dog or the Kids, perhaps browse the internet on our phone or laptop, we get up cook dinner.... Having glasses that makes you just sit there just isn't the TV Experience.
Then you will not have as many websites. Making and supporting a web site takes time and money. To support a website you need to be able to do the following. 1. Have the site support or extend a product or service you are paying for. This is most corporate web sites. Their features are about the company and extras are there to keep you on it so you remember the name. 2. Some sort or grant (IE Begging for money). This will work as long as you have enough supporters. 3. Pay to use the service (Pay Wall). Your product really needs to be special enough for this. 4. Use some space to advertise.
I am not sure if you remembered how horrable adds were in the late 1990's early 2000. Adds and adds cluttering your system all about irrelevant stuff. Today for most reputable sites You have a couple adds, more or less about stuff you are interested in, they are not often a lot more subdued and out of the way. However because they are targeted towards your profile they are more useful and don't need to be so much in your face.
Perhaps we really need to completely rethink the Keyboard process, as a means of input. Qwerty is the norm, is because that is what they typewriters have been Query, there have been countless classes teaching people how to type on A Qwerty Keyboard. So when computers came out they stuck with it. Dvorak, while may offer some speed advantage not as much as people think. Perhaps in the world of touch screens we need to rethink user input and drop the Keyboard and replace it with something new. I do like the concept that Dasher has, as well other more abdaptive tequniques.
Why not just drop the Episode nonsense from the movies.
It isn't like anything you will do will stop a bunch of Raving Sci-Fi lunatics from complaining about it anyways. Even though they complain about it they are going to see it anyways.
That said, the biggest problem with Ep I-III, wasn't the special effects or Jar-Jar, but the fact we never really liked Anakin Skywalker. Yes we knew he will go to the darkside, but I wanted a character who I didn't want to go to the Dark Side, and the transition of Jedi Knight to Sith Lord should have been a tragic one. Not "Oh you are the Sith Master!" "Yea, wanna join the Dark Side, I'll give you a cool name" "Sure, sounds good, let me throw Samuel L. Jackson out the window" "Good, your name is now Darth Vader" "Sweet!"
Back in the ancient times civilizations had small centers of learning and education, where a good disaster could clear out civilization and they more or less need to start over. However now information is spread across the world. A super volcano kills the US. Europe and Asia still has most of our information and society will continue on, and vice versa.
A major super major disaster would probably send us back 70 years. And would probably take us 30 years to recover. We as people know about the internal combustion engine, transistors, optics... And could rebuild with our experience. Back in ancient times average joe knew how to make fire, the wheel and farming techniques. So a civilization was killed off, they didn't go have to reinvent the wheel, they already know how to make it. However in ancient times a small number of people understood mathematics, science, and reading, so it could get killed off and needed to be rediscovered. Not so much anymore today.
We are currently looking at our petty issues of today such as Bad economy and not having enough money for Food, Housing, BlueRay Player and an iPad, and having to pay for Cable too. So we are a bit depressed, people are protesting the government about stuff that governments tend to always do. And global warming creates more weather disasters that hit small areas. What is the East Coast compared to the rest of the world.
So if you want to be prepared for a collapse in civilization, think what they had in the 1940's
Dooomed we are all doooom.
