If you code it well, there shouldn't be to many major differences across versions for most updates. You can write code that works good enough that works for many OS's and platforms where most updates to the code can be done and tested rather easily. Flash isn't a high performance App, so I doubt there are not many special 64bit code outside the normal library set.
That is why I think it needs a reboot. All the quest games too. Many of the old plots were designed to take advantage of the hardware of the time. For the early quest games it is mostly about walking around and taking a look at all the graphics, for each screen. As during the Quest time series games were in the focus on graphics stage of game design. I think the reboot of the games needs plots that move a bit faster a little less endless wondering until you stumble on the final key to the Rube Goldberg example to get everything working. Games are not far more immersive now and allow for a slew of new ways to solve the solutions. It is moving more towards game play and less on graphics.
Sure we post on Slashdot stating that it is the companies fault. Prices are too high or some other excuse. Face it the real truth for most people is the reason they download pirated software is to get it for free. They could be selling it for $1.00 and still they would pirate it. Probably coming up with some excuse that it is so cheap that it should be free anyways. The correct way to protest high prices is not to get the game threw any channel. You can live without a game. High piracy rates show that there is demand for the game however the piracy channel is too affordable priced below market value. So all it tells the company that Piracy is the competition not their product
Well the process of science is not a perfect one. We get leads we follow them and hit dead ends. Sometimes they get really close... Sometime you need to go back a few steps and retweek it sometimes you need to go to the starting board. I am sure any break-threw we find, there will be years of research that goes on, with plenty of failures.
How is giving credit to your sources and paying money to your inspiration stifling innovation. The Open Source people look at copyrights as a barrier, really they are not. It allows people to publish and post their material without fear that they are going to get ripped off. Say I was a Computer Science PHD student, (I am not but lets pretend I am) I spend all this time and research on the topic for my theses. Say it was very theoretical then a decade later when computing power is good enough to process my theory some snotnose grad student or even an undergrad gets a hold of my paper and turns my theory into a practical device. Sure the grad student deserves credit for turning theory into something practical.... However I get credit too for giving him the underlining concepts.
Sometimes the Judge needs to set the bar at a different level. Even if it is not in our sides favor. Fair Use Defense is very loose set of rules with a huge gray area, and would really need a higher court to mark such lines. And the Time and effort to prove fair use would be long and laborious and only give a small advantage to the case. We really need to debate more concrete issues. If we loose then we can try for a higher court. Who may be more willing to attempt to draw the fair use line. However if that line is drawn it may not be to our favor as well.
Yea... OS X full OS Windows Vista... Full OS A Linux Kernel... Just part of the OS
Perhaps you should take a look a work desktop with Linux on it. Graphical Artifacts everywhere that or have it randomly lockup on me. Most Linux Distributions who focus on Desktops would be ecstatic if they could get Linux to run as well as OS X 10.1 or Vista. Don't fool yourself Linux has problems a LOT of problems. If you get the perfect system and check every stupid hardware spec then you probably get a nice running Linux system... Sure Mac OS X fixes the problem by selling the OS that fits the PC. And Microsoft has everyone trying to make drivers for them. But still don't think that Linux is that superior then everything else. It is not.
How does one promote open source in a managerial culture?
In other words the college has purchased some tools that do work for them. You want them to dump their investment and go with open source tools that can takes years to perfect.
And that plastic bag in the box? That won't break down quickly. And the box may be put in a landfill packed to tight that it will not biodegrade. Sure Chips have an impact. However if they are 1% the size of the box. and the improved efficiency saves 2 out of hundred boxes, then you are better off. Heck those chips my be recyclable too.
Not as obvious as you may think. Managers sometimes keeps programmers in the meeting as a sanity check, What is worse wasting an hour and being board at a meeting. Or after an hour long meeting with management they come up with an idea that is impossible or difficult to program. And have to do it anyways as it has already been sold to the customer during that meeting.
Did you consider the environmental impact of better inventory control? Probably not, because it is one of those things that you see in your world normally. The better we can handle inventory, we are allowed to have smaller warehouses, more optimal shipping methods, better use so it can be sold before it expires or become obsolete then tossed anyways. Environmentalism is weighing the cost and benefits. Not going crazy and saying no to progress.
"The advantage of cursive over printing is that it is faster and less fatiguing to the hand. " The advantage of typing over cursive is that it is faster and less fatiguing to the hand, and it is more readable.
Some arts and skill dies over time as new improvements are made. Yes it is a loss in some ways but it often is the way it goes.
There is a real balance out there. The reason for the tight control is to prevent damaging software, which is a good thing. However Apple needs to lay off on apps that compete with the phones defaults. Sure their stuff is good but it doesn't always quite feet the need where a new app could.
I personally think their process should just check to insure the app doesn't kill the phone or slow it down way to much. And that it is age related. But besides that, let the honest companies make software without worry that they will get denied just because of some app approver with a God complex.
There is a balance that is needed to maintain. Enviromentalism and Personal Freedom. It is not one or the other. It is getting a good balance between the two. Greenpeace wants to dictate how people live, and make a huge fuss about any resistance, even if it is relatively minor.
The way that environmentalism works the best is threw education and marketing. Don't give the people these worst cases of dooms day scenario. This will only get a small group of people and when it doesn't go as plan they drop away and don't believe you any more. (Eg. Durring the 1970 they had predicted Global Cooling, that didn't happen so a lot of people won't believe in global warming. (Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me)) I like the trend that we are going in now for environmentalism. Put effort in research to make current technology more energy efficient. Implementing other sources of power, showing people that they can be green without breaking the budget.
If they are able to influence my Father to get a win turbine for his house (a staunch republican who still doesn't believe in global warming) then I think we are going in the right direction. Forcing people will only give push-back, showing them alternatives and good cost/benefit information will move to your goal much faster.
It would be interesting to see how these games run on a bunch of different peoples computers. Just as Linux works great for some people and for others it has a huge array of annoying glitches. I personally never hated Vista that much and it actually ran quite well on a MacBook Pro. Also when Vista was first released we have a lot of what we are having now a bunch of mostly good reviews of the system. Lets wait and see what real life will bring. When it is finally tested in eMachienes and Compaqs and Low end Dells... All those PC that windows beta tester would never run.
Ahh.... But if you were smart and you invested your upfront money you can be making 10% for the investment then paying the 7% thus still making 3% on top of that. There is a real value in paying over time even with interests. Then paying upfront.
You must not have worked with Indians before, they are just as good if not better then most American Workers, today. Especially if you have a good management team who can talk the language and know the culture. Sure you will come up a couple of bad eggs or some horror stories. But really you can get those same stories from any group of people. However I find them in general to be very motivated workers and rather quite intelligent and willing to learn new things. They became the american ideal while we have gotten fat lazy and feeling entitled.
The Robot will not do the job perfectly, hence the completive advantage of SpinBox humans can translate human speech better then a computer can. Robots have a lot of hidden costs as well. You change your process you need a full set of new robots and technology. Or you spend a lot of money for more general use robots which preform slower.
The cost of outsourcing isn't as cheap as saying well and American gets paid $25 an hour while an Indian gets paid $5 so it is 5 times cheaper working with India. There is extra management of working with people in different areas and other costs however this is a management issue which can be optimized to work.
I am sure if the work was being outsourced to a country were people speak the same language and look and have a similar culture to us and lighter skin, then there would be less of an outrage. You may deny that fact, and you may believe your denial. However I bet if you honestly looked in yourself you will realize most of the outrage with Indian workers is that they are not you race of people.
Outsourcing to India has many benefits besides cost being halfway around the world allows 24 hour operations. In essence doubling your output. And they are hard workers who do good quality work. Now if your management is stupid then you may get bad results but that is true anywhere.
It is not evil or part of some plot. It is just life. As we find better ways of doing things jobs are lost. Why don't we have a local blacksmith, because factories can for the most part do the same thing for cheaper and more quickly.
Oddly enough cars really don't impress girls that much. It actually impresses the guys more, and the girls follow the guys, so you may improve your exposure chances.
After looking at the pictures. I kinda wish they didn't put the transformers logo on it. Just the Autobot symbols so it looks like the character. Putting the logo on it reminds me of those cheap $3 costumes for Halloween where you get a mask and a plastic smock with the picture of what you are supposed to look like, its name and what show it is from. Just so when you go trick or treating the adults can properly guess who you are and make you feel like you actually did a good job in choosing a cool costume.
Don't forget the upgrades prices are with your car total price so you are paying for it via your car loan. Which means you don't need to wait to save up the couple of thousand for these upgrades. Or try to get the bank to loan you more money for extras which may be harder then getting the money for the car. Plus you pay it off with the price of your car. So you can make it part of your normal budget.
There Games G-A-M-E-S Really why should we care if someone has the ability to make them or not. It is not like a failure to make a game will end civilization or even harm it. If it comes out then we decide to buy it or not. Play with it for a few months dump in archive and pull it out every couple years for. That is if your lucky. This story makes it seem that a failure to produce a game is a huge loss to the world. Sorry it isn't. Failure to make a game isn't our fault it is due to poor management at the place making the games. Even with Indy games, if they fail they didn't manage the process right. Sorry. If the programmers can program write the program doesn't work and we give them no pity. But if wasn't managed right we give them pitty, Ohh lets give them more money to finish it. Why bad managers take more money then they should for the results they make. Good managers use the money and resources efficiently to produce the product with the budget given. Giving a company your personal bailout money just so they can manage their product poorly isn't a good investment or a good idea.
While the course may not be about working in teams and having the students learn to collaborate. You should teach them that anyway. It is a valuable skill in Real Life (c) [tm]. Now you should have them do it their own way but give them guidelines on what they should consider. Use a versioning system sure. Emails IM to make sure they are not stomping on each foot. Or do it the Old way (GASP) write out what they will do each of their responsibility make a project plan and who will do what and when. Make prototypes etc....
You don't need to grade them on their project management. However learning isn't always about the class you teach.
Yea giving people back full refunds after a period of use is an excellent business plan.
Amazon didn't want this to happen it is the publishers fault. If anything you can blame Amazon for not being tough on these publishers, and make contracts that stick. But the evil was in the publisher not the technology provider.
So... You went to a place who is paying for employees and rent for a building then traded with someone else and gave nothing back to them. So you have taken the value of the store without paying for such value. Man you are cheap bastard. Capitalism isn't what can you get away with. But trading for good of value.

The GPL spirit? Which one the idea of sharing for a common goal. Or the idea that is is pure evil to do anything not in RMS's vision?
