Well, I know that the local SSTV net here is still somewhat active. I've caught a decent amount of it while traveling as well. I'd say it's not dead yet, even if it is in a bit of a decline.

Oddly, I believe you have your gasoline and diesel prices mixed for the US. I've been a trucker for years, and it's been AGES since I saw diesel cheaper than gas. Where I usually get gas, it was $3.34 (US) for a gallon of unlead regular, and $4.29 for diesel.
My main computer to this day is an IBM Thinkpad 600E. PII/300, 160MB of RAM, 40 GB hard drive (the old 6 GB that it came with finally kicked recently) running Windows XP of all things (mostly because I do end up rebooting it a lot, and 2k takes forever to come up). I run Office 2003 and Firefox on it. It does thrash a good bit while Firefox is starting (and especially if Firefox has been idle a good while with a few tabs going and been swapped out), and on boot, but in all honesty, it's too bad. I imagine with Linux, it'd move even faster. It's not an ideal configuration, but it works well enough for editing Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and the evil that is Powerpoint, general web browsing (though.FLV's are painful, flash itself works fine), and instant messaging (Pidgin in this case).
I'll grant you that more would be better, but it's certainly not useless.
I'll second the ham radio use. I'd love to get my hands on an old C-band dish, but everyone seems to want a pile of money for them, oddly enough. Oh, well, I know I'll find one eventually.
73!
Lori Drew, OTOH, performed an act of criminal harassment against an unwitting teenage girl, causing her to commit suicide. I'm sure we'd all like to see her prosecuted, even if she had never used the internets to do it.
I agree with you, with one little caveat. I'd like to see her prosecuted for criminal harassment, not computer trespass. It would only seem logical to prosecute her for what she actually did.
Well, there's a few young hams about. I'm an Extra class ham myself, 25 years of age. K1PUP at your service. A good friend of mine is also 25 and an Extra, K1QV. I'm happy they dropped the high-speed morse requirement, though I can get by the lower one well enough. Knowing code is actually rather nice, in my opinion. It's useful to identify repeaters in the area, and to talk (well code) in less than optimal conditions. There's a few other younger hams in the area -- you just have to hunt around for us!
You know, I've been doing data entry for years...and at a decent speed. Until you said this, I didn't realize that I'd been hamstringing myself.
I've found that, oddly enough, I seem to only type with the middle 3 fingers on each hand, plus the pinkies for shift, and left thumb for space. Granted, my hands are fairly big (I can hit Q and P at the same time with one hand without use of the thumb), but it surprised to see that the pinky stays up in the air on both hands while I type. I guess I never bothered to look after so many scoldings while learing on a typewriter.

Oh! I misunderstood -- I thought those were prices quoted from the various locations, not currency conversions. My bad.

Got an invite? ;)

Well, it worked -- I couldn't resist :)
Actually, going by the page on backslashdot.org, nothing belongs on it! /. however... ;)

Hehe, yeah. Though...wouldn't those be hare brakes? *ducks*
Bring in....THE COMFY CHAIR! *dramatic chord*
You, sir, caused me to almost spit coffee all over my monitor and keyboard. I know it's an old joke, but it was unexpected. Way to go :)
Ohh, so that's how I ended up with so many, despite the lack of actually purchasing any in years!
Drill a hole in it and refill, of course!
I don't know about you, but I know that my water bill is anything but free...
No, actually, it's hunter2.

I don't know where the GP is, but I'm in Springfield, MA and every 7-11 for miles around has Bawls.
Whoosh!
Not as such. You're limited by the combined upstream of the peers. I regularly see download speeds on well-seeded Linux ISOs in the >300k/sec range.

Obviously, a football is the particle which, when resting in air with a temperature of 22C and a pressure of 1013.25 hPa, generates a Football Field.

Thanks for the interesting test!
