It's actually a lot of fun, and I've met some very interesting people. Diaspora already has most of the features described above, such as federation. I like how you can follow hashtags also, because it allows you to see comments from people you don't already know, and thus make new friends, something which I feel Facebook lacks. There are some strong devs still out there and waiting to jump in the game, I think D* will stay alive and eventually overtake Facebook.
Bitcoin uses encrypted wallets which are not linked to your name or address. It is the strongest computer in the world and it supports p2p DNS through namecoin. It is much more secure than online banking with ACH, and much harder to usurp than centralized BIND servers. Plus they won't print 1,000,000,000,000 of them this year.
Hmmmm no details whatsoever about the actual harware or software architectures. Not even a single picture of a single molecular sized anything. I call BS.
These systems are hyperbolic PDE's, solvable by C, C++, or MATLAB scripts. You need to satisfy the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition for convergence, which is related to the speed of the fastest waves in the system and the granularity of your model. Your order of accuracy can easily reach 100% error for 2nd order difference methods unless you have a fair number of points per wavelength, like 30 or so. Modelling large systems can quickly lead to running out of RAM unless you have access to a supercomputer, thats why they teach classes about these equations at high performance computing centers. Check out this page for a 1 and 2 spatial dimension matlab implementation of the leap-frog difference method. Hope it helps!
Just working with Ubuntu on a mac powerpc G4 titanium this week. Feisty apparently introduced a bug where the sound won't work on G4 titaniums (just titaniums!), I guess no one is ever going to fix that in the later kernels b/c G4's are getting older. Maybe if I was a linux guru I could fix that...
There is no flash for ppc users anymore, they just decided to stop supporting linux ppc users!
I'll still use it as long as I can get ppt and doc files running correctly (within a few hours command-lining), but if I'm in a crunch and I need something that just works, I'll be working on my XP desktop..
Wifi worked on startup, which was nice.
Beryl is fun, but it's really just eye-candy.
The problem with legalizing Mary Jane is that drug offenders make the best prison workers, and prison labour is the biggest growth sector in the American job market right now...
Just a warning, if you steal my identity and take me for $30G, I will shoot you dead. When there is no justice in the courts, the only real justice is vigilante.
Maybe we could just give the telcos like $200 billion dollars and have them built new hardware that would keep us competitive and stop the outflow of our tech industry to countries like Korea... Oh, wait... Seriously, why hasn't something been done to hold the telcos responsible for what I see as a MASSIVE fleecing of the american public? As I see it I already paid for my unlimited bancwidth for the next couple years...
LOL, you think online piracy will ever stop? Thats a very creative idea. I cringe to think what kind of "real" laws you would like to see... I'm gonna go pirate all sorts of songs and software now. HAHA.
Most people can actually sense electric current. When used in tiny amounts for muscle therapy it is quite pleasant. 120V @ 60Hz is not particularly pleasant. At rf and higher frequency, your body cannot sense the current and you can end up with nasty burns you don't even notice until you smell your flesh burning.
I remember playing with a flyback transformer with a negative feedback circuit (plasma globe driver). When started, it would buzz up from sonic to rf frequency, and create a little breakout arc on the electrode. My dog would not only wince at the sound but also apparently felt the rf shock once when she got too close to (but didn't even touch) the electrode.
I'm done with Ubuntu now and forever. Canonical is dead to me.
At least time has stopped, then.
... *until* the apocalypse?
We need more attacks orinating from the USA! We're losing! What the hell is Brazil smoking? Get us some of that!
"... a few hundred times hotter than the surface of the sun." That's very warm.

never paying for music again until the RIAA is dead and gone.

So what happens when all the people who are supposed to be mining the coal die? No one thought, "hey maybe this thing should run on solar power"?

Muahaha, my evil plan of turning people into oil is finally coming true! Wait, are people made of plastic?
Free markets always work best with strict government controls... Thats why they call them "free".

I think someone should FUCKING BOMB the FCC.
You can have my guns when you pry them from my cold dead hands...

What remains will be 'an island universe' made from the Milky Way and its nearby galactic Local Group neighbors in an overwhelmingly dark void...
yes, because crossing intergalactic space is so easy nowadays...
Ron Paul gets my vote, no contest. If you knew what freedom was you would already know to vote for him.
America: Your days are numbered.
Russian firemen will now be lighting fires. More at twelve.
