Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if MS had included a proper, unified installer/updater/uninstaller interface and strongly influenced software to use it.
Imagine a package manager for everything, provided by MS so that there wouldn't be ten different kinds of package managers causing the same problem again.
I also have a time limit for my decision. If I don't click fast enough, then I miss the opportunity the notification is giving me. In addition, if the notification is about something important, I may miss it if I'm away, so this means that important notifications must also be displayed
For IM notifications, Download completions, Email Notifications and other such notifiers, The clicking option is solely for convenience while the person is at the computer. The time limit need only be long enough for me to see it while I am sitting there.
If it is that important, such as an email notification, printer jammed message, or updates available notification, I will get this convenience pop-up AND a tray notifier so I am aware of it when I return to my computer, or if I want to action on it later.
The important thing to realize is that pop-up notifications were intended for CONVENIENCE. So I feel that yes, they should be clickable.
Frequently when I restart my computer (most often while connected to a USB dock with audio) my volume control forgets its setting. Meaning I end up with volume buttons that do nothing and so I need to change the default mixer setting.
Ok, minor inconvenience maybe, but where is it?
System->Prefs->Sound? (here it is!)
System->Prefs->Default Soundcard? (sounds right, but its not!)
System->Prefs->Volume Control? (nope)
System->Prefs->Multimedia System Selector? (nope)
Also related, but more obviously seperate is:
System->Prefs->Pulse Audio Preferences.
Some degree of unification of settings need to occur. All these options need to be consolidated and put in one, sensible place.
Computer science topics could serve as examples of applications of those mathematical foundations
My biggest difficulties in learning mathematics has been applications. I have always found it very difficult to study something with no usefulness. Without application, mathematics is worthless. Math is about accomplishing something, not about "what is the cosine of pi?"
Many math courses I have taken seem to avoid doing any application beyond "What is the area of this square?"
1-2 hours worth of work every night, every test is "closed book", every quiz is unannounced, and there's no such thing as extra credit. You should hear the crying of unfairness and cruelty. (The funny thing is for the 4 years I've been at my school, my AP class has had the highest passing rate of all AP courses taught at our school.)
Now this is why you are precisely the kind of teacher I dislike the most. The one who thinks their class is the only one that matters.
Do you honestly think that after being in school from 8am to 3pm (7 hours) students should be expected to study an additional 6-12 hours? (1-2 hours per subject). This is ridiculous, as no person, let alone child has that kind of attention span or time (12-19 hours).
It is my humble opinion that the majority of 'textbook' learning should be done at school, and afterwards, the students need time to learn to play, interact, and learn responsibilities besides that of doing their homework.
I have also felt that many students would benefit from having more time focused on them, and so small group learning should be the norm, not 25-40 students in a classroom for a lecture. It is not the amount of time spent learning or the hours of homework spent, but the quality and efficiency that matters. We need to increase the number of teachers per student-perhaps 1 student per 6 kids. This would have to be accomplished likely by trained volunteers or less-qualified Teacher Assistants and one teacher.
However, I do strongly agree that there has been a softening in standards across the board, and that students expect to be coddled more. But I do think that the expectations on students are higher. There is simply much more to have to learn and know on a daily basis.
It is no longer the three R's (readin', 'ritin' and 'rithmatic) Now we have Social Studies, Health, Computer Science, Cooking, English, Spanish, Gym class, and on top of that students are expected to perform 50 hours of community service a year and after school activities and boy/girlscouts and have a part-time job when they reach 15 or 16.
What ever happened to bein' a kid?
Education is going to need to be revamped in a big way.
See Mosquito Ringtone. Some high-frequency sounds (such as those made by high-frequency DC-AC inverters) cannot by heard by some people. This does not make the people who can hear them crazy. They just have more acute hearing than you.
I agree. Two words completely address all these issues:
*Access to a computer
*Access to similar software
*Access to the internet
*All student have these resources
These two magical words are: COMPUTER LAB
Have a decently-sized, well provisioned computer lab that is open at least an hour before and 3 hours after school. Costs will be lessened, and only a computer lab attendant will be required compared to repairs and damages, etc, not to mention the crazy costs of macbooks compared to generic desktops or even apple desktops.
Doesn't not purchasing poorly made hardware on the grounds that it is poorly made, even if that means going without, demonstrate to your kids that they should not be consumer whores and demand a certain amount of quality, no matter how much or how little the item costs?
Personally, I think this attitude that the grandparent should buy an Xbox to appease his kid or to allow his kid to be a (IMNSHO) whiny game nerd anyway just so he doesn't miss out is far less valuable. It would simply reinforce the consumerist idea that "I gotta have it... everyone has one, so what if it sucks"
I've been using Ubuntu since edgy (currently on Intrepid, which has been VERY buggy compared to hardy) and Have NEVER used indexing. I simply cannot see the point, my files are organized using directories. I simply never installed indexing, and have no issues.
First off, really good analogy, in itself. However, I think you missed the fact that the students would *not* be administering the systems, in fact, I never learned any of that even in college (I'm almost finished college)

actually, at a university of 40k students, with a large percentage of them living in campus housing, bandwidth usage become an issue. My university allows students to use 4GB of downloads and 4 GB uploads each week. This means a way is needed to match connections and traffic to a particular student so they can be provided with an online bandwidth meter, and so we can penalize those who abuse the resources.
I work at a computer help desk at a large PA university. Just yesterday I saw a lappy come in with complaints of "slowness, possible virus". Our AV didn't detect anything, but this was a lenovo laptop with a 1.6 gHz Celeron-M with 512MB of ram. This system was running, you guessed it, Vista WITH Aero enabled. Took 5 minutes just to shut the damn thing down! Seriously messed up! The best we could do was turn off Aero, adjust swap settings and recommend a RAM upgrade.
And signings have limited effectiveness beyond single authors/bands, I'd like to see how you would fund the creation of an entire TV series with that.
I'm pretty sure television used to make money off of commericals, and way back when, they used to have cable tv, which you payed for because there were no commercials. Now you pay for cable tv AND there are commercials. Why can't I just pay for the shows I want to watch and get rid of commercials, or just pay for a few channels without commercials. And there is certainly no reason why the movie industry can't make movie theatres that are better than home entertainment and make money on concessions, have a commercial/socializing break and make money, All possibly without the use of copyright. Thing is, you need to CHANGE, re-invent, INNOVATE, all things they do not wish to do.
I wonder what effect the weight would have on the orbit of the earth? How much of a wobble will earth gain by attaching a tethered weight to one side? Maybe we should build two at a time, on opposite sides of the earth?
Well, I've always wondered why we don't have brake lights that give indication of the rate of deceleration. Like multiple lights or rapid flashing brake lights. The light would have to be related to the vehicle's deceleration rate and NOT to the brake pressure, as brake pressure would allow people to fake hard decel easier. But why not have a row of say, 3 lights, that get taller as the decel increases?
in some places, that may not be considered trespassing, since the door is unlocked, and no one and no sign asked you to leave or warned of trespassing.
buying the in-store warranty often means getting a replacement = go to store, get new one today. This is apposed to: pay shipping to send the defective unit to manufacturer, wait three weeks to find out they won't cover it/get a re-manufactured one, etc.
For certain items, this can be very worth it.
Umm, I'd just like to point out the that guy behind the point-of-sale counter making minimum wage or less (commission) probably doesn't have much choice where he works, and definately cannot afford to say "this company's products are sketchy, i'd rather not eat than work here"

Have you EVER used the Add/Remove application?
You just described all the things it has as if it didn't have them. See this image: http://dhashi.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/screenshot-add-remove-applications.png It has search, Categories, And Complete Descriptions, as well as links to more information.

Ideally players would do compression on-the-fly at your command so that only one copy would suffice.

im with you on that, I lurked from 2k3 to 2k6 or 7, definately missed out
Screw College (I'm at a state college, and it is quite expensive), use the money, start a bigger business, then use the profits to go to college

can drive on roads with cars instead of it's own track?

oh great, so now I have to worry about where my link came from AND what's on my facebook page to get hired? jeez!
