That's funny. I'm posting from chrome now. (not my fav browser, but it's not bad) Are you using windows or mac? Because on Ubuntu I only ever get updates to chrome when I hit the update button on Synaptic. 8-)
But ya, at my university they have download and upload limits per week, and having updates push you over pisses people off all the time. (I used to work at the desk that was involved in assisting the users and handling bandwidth issues) I'd I'd say they definitely need to fix that.
To both my HelpDesk and the User's frustrations, the only information the lockout system gives us is usually "Misc Bot" or "Misc Bots". It sucks having to tell users that when they ask just why they need to be reformatted.
They do exactly that at my University. Students get disconnected from the network when a bot or worm or rootkit is detected. I'm not sure what methods they use to detect, but when this happens, the user is REQUIRED to bring their computer to the Residential Computing Desk and have it reformatted. (They are allowed to and assisted with make(ing) backups of their personal files.)
The users are sent an email informing them of the situation, but usually they never get it, and just visit or call the desk when their internet won't work.
It's always pretty funny (but rare) when a Mac needs to be reformatted, the user is almost always blown away that they can be infected.
The notion that natural selection determines that outcome of the universe is, to many people, a profoundly unsettling explanation.
(just speculating) Could this perhaps be due to a tendency for people to shirk responsibility for what happens to them, e.g. blame luck or fate for lack of preparation or ability?
Such as saying "it wasn't meant to be" for failed relationships instead of analyzing what went wrong or was incompatible and learning from it.
Or perhaps to be able to have hope that despite what they do, if it was "meant to be", then they would have gotten that house/job/child.
Just makes me wonder how much religion and faith stems from personal failings and the human need for hope.
As far as I can tell, College is about getting some piece of paper that states you paid at least $x dues to the 'cushy job club' and sat through 'professors' (read: researchers required to teach) trying to explain concepts to people with nowhere near the familiarity with the subject they have, making them terrible teachers, since they are unable to relate things in terms and at a level the students understand, since they have far surpassed that level.
Exposure to culture consists of dealing with greeks, geeks and alcohol. A trade school or apprenticeship would undoubtedly impart much more knowledge in ANY applied field than sitting through lecture at a US college.

They are merely checking if the machine has been compromised, before going ahead with applying the patch. Do you want to include an entire rootkit scanner, removal tool, definition files, etc. with every update you send out on windows update?
Well, I'd damn well expect that if they decide not to install the update because of the infection, THEN it should tell me about it and perhaps download and run the appropriate MSRT.
maybe it does, but TFS doesn't say, and I really shouldn't be on/. right now anyway.
Have you investigated your browsing habits? Because, In my experience, opening 20+ pages with 5-10 images each (art, I swear!) ends up eating a lot a memory. Memory usage depends on your browsing habits as well.
I agree, but my point remains, he couldn't speak? he couldn't at least acknowledge the 911 operator? Even just to say, "hold on a sec"?
As well, he didn't know how to shut the car off? I know it's not your usual keyed ignition, but you should at least spend the time to learn how to turn the car on and off before you drive it!
Not at you, Cro Magnon, but whoever modded me...
Flame bait? really? I expressed my disbelief at the man's incompetency and detailed what he obviously should have done in response but failed to do (i.e. why my disbelief is reasonable).
Of course that is welcoming a response, but really, isn't that the whole point of the comments on Slashdot? To respond to articles and discuss them?
I've got plenty of positive karma, so I'm not worried, but Mods, please leave the flamebait moderation for the obvious, unsupported attempts at pissing people off
Just listened to the 911 call. The guy was only going 80 mph and couldn't even manage to answer the 911 operator verbally, but he was able to dial them? WTF? Was he on drugs or retarded or something? I could see freaking out if my car was doing 110 or something, but 80? I mean please, just put ur blinkers on, keep tapping the horn, and make it clear to the other vehicles that you have a problem. They will get out of your way, and 80mph on the highway shouldn't be difficult to drive.
Finally, what the hell is with people not knowing how to operate a multi-ton machine but doing it anyway? What kinda moron drives a car without knowing how to disengage or shut off the engine?
The man should lose his license for being incompetent!
I think weight is another big factor. If it's supposed to be a "tablet", like say a clipboard with some papers on it i'm working-on/reading/checking-of-stuff then it needs to be nearly as light weight as one, so i can just hold it up in the air like a clipboard while using it. Holding an 5 lb laptop gets pretty tiring. Otherwise, it just becomes a hard-to-read desk with a screen on it, and not very convenient as a "tablet"
Because since it is FOSS, there is NO EXCUSE for Internet Explorer or anyone else to implement it. I have no problem with sites using x264 (I would prefer theora), i am willing to pay a few bucks for Firefox if it mean it would come with x264 support AND theora.
At this point, everyone wins. At the very least, EVERYONE could play the theora in some fashion, so then it will be up to individual sites to decide. Thus why Wikipedia and OVA are trying to tilt the numbers toward theora.
Seven is iffy, from a UI point of view. Some of the UI and management changes are nice. Some were just change for change's sake, and quite backward in usability.
And, no, you don't hear me making apologies for my incompetence. It's a fact. If and when I ever find the need to learn to fly, THEN I will become competent. Til then, I won't go near an aircraft.
The above advice would serve a lot of people well when it comes to computers.
Eh, I as an "Intelligent Person" (for specific, possibly low, values of intelligence) tend to get at least a basic working knowledge of how the appliances and equipment I use on a daily basis works.
I can tell when the motor in my blender is burnt out, or if it's the switch, I can troubleshoot basic engine problems for my car, and understand how a gasoline engine works.
I think understanding programs, processes, ram, storage, etc are a core part of that knowledge that should be known about using a computer. Just as how a car functions and how to deal with with maintenance and emergency scenarios are important to driving a car.
I think as a race, we should not accept or expect ignorance
To be fair, I have to kill my gnome-panel every week or so because its memory use shoots from tens to hundreds of megs. It's likely one of the included applet-thingys, but still, it's a memory leak.
FOSS is 100% compatible with capitalism, as it is simply implements a different business model
Excellent point. you made me just realize yet another car anal-oh-gee.
With a simple automobile one could theoretically get anyone to perform repairs and maintenance. Same applies to open source. One can get any sufficiently qualified software engineer or programmer to implement, repair and maintain a piece of software.
Similarly, one can pick from a large variety of electricians to repair a large variety of brands of light switches and appliances
This is the very basis of a capitalistic economy. Imaginary Property quite often gets in the way of these possibilities.

:P
Oooh....BURN!
Uh oh, CowBoyNeal's at my door, he says I have to turn in my account and geek card for all the lame 'humor'
Ya but the problem is which is bigger a Litre or a Liter?
:ducks:

How do those people explain mules? Or any of the other creatures listed here: http://www.messybeast.com/genetics/hybrid-equines.htm

You say that now, but how about when that boss goes against the recommendations of his IT staff and ends up leaking YOUR private data.

What have you done, or what alternatives are available to someone in such a situation?
Enjoy the peace and quiet?
If your only computer is a netbook...
You're doin' it wrong!
You hear that sound up above? Must be windy in here today!
