As an aside, some of your friends are assholes. Our general rule is that those of us who made it into the higher paying roles, or have fewer expenses (no kids, etc.) pay for more of the drinks than the others. That way we all still get to hang out, be we plumbers, geeks or bankers.

As a result, we're a more diverse group than many other circles of friends that I've interacted with and we have some great times.

People in the UK have been afraid to defend themselves and their property for years because they perceive that the law is on the side of the criminal in such matters

Perceive? Gimme a break - it flat out is. Persistent offenders keep getting given community sentences and never see jail time. How can you get to 50 separate convictions without spending life in jail?

And yet more and more people are arrested for assault for defending themselves. Sure, mostly the charges are eventually dropped, but in many cases a simple arrest is enough to destroy your career or life. So why risk it? Let the kids kill the little old lady - as long as I make my train on time :(

And yet, that's never worked as far as I can tell.

You only have a chance of succeeding with a laches defense if the target of your claim can show that you maliciously waited for the patent to become widespread with a view to suing at that time.

As it stands here, the litigator hasn't owned the patent for very long, and sued almost as soon as getting it. No problems there.

The only surefire piece of the 'IP' pie that you have to actively protect is trademarks. Everything else can submarine to your heart's content.

  13. Can't buy them - that stops sales on E-Books Are Only 6% of Printed Book Sales · · Score: 1

In the UK, it seems very, very hard to find eBooks, and that can't be helping sales. I have a Sony PRS-505, and I have to visit 5 - 10 sites to find a book, and only if that is available. Some books have dismal sales because they only release books 1, 3 and 4 of a series as eBooks. If I can't get book 2, I'm not buying the others.

For a number of reasons, I can't buy paper books any more. It's mostly a space thing.

At the moment, it takes 30 - 60 minutes to buy many popular books. First, I have to buy an Amazon.com gift card with my real account. Then I have to use a proxy to hide my location and use a second account to use that gift card to buy a book on Amazon.com. Then I have to strip the DRM and then finally I can load it onto my reader. What a pain - If I could find the content, I'd pirate it!
