Burning a CD of songs for my friends is fucking fair use to me.
Think about that for a minute. You've got such a convenient way to rationalize this:
And where I live, it is LEGAL. I have 20 gigs worth of MP3s, all legally downloaded from P2P networks, ripped from CDs borrowed from friends or the public libraries.
And the best thing is that it allows me to do my little part to destroy those big music companies, all legally.
Why else would a country enact laws against the interests of both country's population and its future economic power? I can see limited term copyright laws being beneficial in Russia, but only with exemptions for income levels and educational use. How does anyone benefit from a kid being computer illiterate because his parents one year salary still can not buy Vista, Office and Photoshop?
It's the bourgeois. The bourgois will only act in their self-interest, and too bad if this goes against the national interests. The US has a lot of nice goodies for bourgois all over the world who will toe their line, so the bourgeois will always seek to subvert democratic institutions in order to please Uncle Sam, because when Uncle Sam is happy, he happily gives them little trinkets while they make money on the back of their own countries.
The point is: FV = PV(1 + r)^n
Where FV = Future Value, PV = Present Value, r = rate of interest, and n = number of years.
When n is 400, the current value had best be pretty darn small or it just isn't worth it.
It only takes a fucking anglo-saxon to put a price on something, and then boldly declare, for a perfectly superficial reason, that "it's not worth it".
And you yankees wonder why the whole planet hate your guts.
This isn't a cable/DSL issue. This is a "we don't tell you how much but we cut you off anyhow" issue. In Canada we are generally advised our bandwidth limits.
Telus (DSL) offer you 10GB, 30GB, 60GB and 60GB for their 4 different speed packages.
It's not only that, it's a "technology" (yeah, right) issue. Those DSL providers who provide service over Bell Nexxia networks (most of Ontario and Québec) advertise limits but are unable to advertise them, because Bell will not account usage over their DSLAMS, so they are unable to figure out how each customer uses.
I really don't agree. I realize that around here it is popular to bad mouth America,
but I really cringe when I wonder what would happen to the UK if they were subjected
to the same level of terrorism that the US was with September 11th. Not to be too
condescending, but the tube bombings were really nothing in comparison to the numbers
killed in the WTC.
What bullshit!!!!
Britain had much more experience dealing with domestic terrorism than the US, thanks to the Irish Republican Army who never wasted any good opportunity to bomb London.
Better yet, it wasn't until AFTER 9/11 that the US finally outlawed giving money to the IRA in the US (remember those tipping dishes in irish bars? Did you think the money went to the busboys???)
Here in the US, people seem to have what I call a hysteria of action. If something bad happens to anyone , Sometime Must Be Done, so that nobody ever has to suffer ever again.
In my book, that's the sign of an advanced, enlightened civilization.

Though fucking noogies.
The United States bears within the seeds of it's own destruction. By indoctrinating kids with the notion of having money instead of doing something worthwile, it will only promote the learning of parasitic, destructive and lucrative crafts like lawyer, salesman or MBA.
Exactly 50 years ago, in 1957, Sputnick was launched and shocked the USA in realizing that their Science education was not at par with the pinko soviet communists. Since those 50 years, the US has entered a downdrain spiral of falling into "easy" mind tricks, illustrated most eloquently by the extreme rise of religious people who, as a matter of faith, will outright reject science.
It's not for nothing that muslims countries are ass-backwards: their religion impedes Science, just as the christianity is impeding Science in the USA.
There is no way out, unless the USA will ditch it's anglo-saxon greedyness mindset, dump the religion in the garbage heap of History (shooting all evangelists in the head oughta do it, as well as compulsory mixed masturbation classes for boys and girls) and get it's ass back together properly.
In the meanwhile, enlightened countries in Europe will sit back and have a good laugh at the USA's self-destructive habits consume it in an orgy of god-dictated stupidity.
I'm a web designer/developer in a mostly print design shop, and we actually ran into a situation where one of our designers quit to work in-house with one of our clients. The effect being that she left, and having no more need of us, the client did too.
So what happens? Nothing really. We chose not to pursue the legal route because the client wasn't worth what we would've had to pay in legal fees, and secondly because no legal ruling would repair the situation. Sure, maybe we could bilk a little extra cash out of the client on the way out, but we couldn't seek an injunction against our designer working for them.
This is stupid. Suing their customers works very well for the RIAA, so why shouldn't it work for them too????
I'm perplexed at Bill's thinking here. He apparently doesn't think US students are getting enough math and science or are going into that field.
Bill is perfectly right here. There are insufficient numbers of science graduates in US schools, as evidenced by the extremely high number of evangelists christians who are not overwhelmed by intelligence given how they believe the absolute bullshit found in the bible.
And there will not be any more any time soon, because having an intelligent, independently-thinking population is not good for the economy, because they would not accept stupid menial jobs and blindlingly do what the boss tells them so they can buy all what their bosses want to sell them through commercials.
The whole of the USA is based on the necessity of an overabundance of stupid, ignorant people.

The Liberals in Canada have a history of being soft on terrorism.
Of course they are: they have to be; they're terrorists themselves.
During the 1960's and 1970's, they remote-controlled through the RCMP the FLQ "terrorist" group (which was heavily infiltrated by the RCMP) to put bombs here and there, and, most importantly, to kidnap a Québec minister (Pierre Laporte) days before he was to be indicted of influence peddling for the mob, thus sparing the newly-elected liberal government much embarrassment.
In addition, this proved a golden opportunity to declare martial law and suspend basic civil liberties, during which 400 political opponents of canada prime minister Trudeau were rounded-up and jailed without trial.
One thing that has to be understood about advertising awards is that they are TOTALLY disconnected from reality or life. Those awards are nothing but self-contragulatory pat-in-the-back intellectual masturbation feel-good devices, awarded by admakers to other admakers. You know, those goddammed fucking admakers who shove advertising down our throats all over the place, including those hated spammers.
Case in point, some 30 years ago, Coca-Cola sales were plumetting and Coca-Cola ran a 2 minute-long ad where children holding hands were singing around a christmas tree. This ad brought down zillions of advertising awards and whatnot, yet, despite that, sales continues to plummet.
Teach kids not to give a rat's ass about what others say.
I went to a french private school, where everything was imported from France, up to the teaching methods.
One of those was that, whenever you screwed-up, the teacher would encourage other kids to laugh at you. So, under those circumstances, you quickly learned not to give a shit about what others said of you.
The problem is that the vast majority of people I talk to don't see the government as a threat. The idea that the government is there to help is completely accepted over here. In fact, people get upset when the government doesn't take care of something (up to the point where they demand the government take action about money people lost on investments, or salaries of top executives perceived to be too high).
The problem is that you are either a bourgeois or an anglo-saxon (or both). Anglo-saxons have had that cultural thing against the State which actually can be traced back to the magna-carta.
The rest of Europe did not have magna-carta, so they don't think that the State/Government is bad, evil, wicked and self-serving. Since they don't think that, their governments are actually good, nice, benevolent and provide actual good services to the public.
Dada21 does not believe in the State. For him, everyone should look after himself, without any kind of laws or protection except by provided by oneself.
They should stick it to Amazon, just to teach them.
Up here (socialist country with a healthy distrust of private entreprise -- thoughout History we have been thoroughly screwed by private entrepreneurs), we have potent consumer protection laws.
Example:
I go to the grocery, and I see that boxes of two frozen pizzas are at $8 instead of $14. So I pick two of them.
I get to the cash, and the girl scans it.
$14 rings the register.
-- Er, they're on special at $8.
The law says that whenever there is a scanning error, the item is free (or $10 discount if the final price is >$10). So I got a box of two pizzas for free and the other for $8.
The law also states that posters stating this fact MUST BE displayed next to EACH cash registers, so the consumers know their rights and the stores can't weasel out of it.
This was late at night, and the dude who has the authorization to fix it was home (it was fun to see the personnel there running scared like headless chickens). So they had to endure giving free boxes of two pizzas until the guy came to work to fix it, or they change their operating procedure.
That teaches them much faster than any other half-baked chamber-of-commerce thought "self-policing" measure...
The chinese one works very good actually, and most Chinese are so brainwashed that they don't have any desire to search for info other than what the government approves.
But norwegians are not brainwashed. And have democracy. And are not jailed when they bitch against their government. And are of western culture.
Those were left-wingextremists. Right-wingers have no problem with kings and the like.
Just shred some coaster CDs, and sprinkle them in shipments. That oughta yield enough false positives to clog the system...
