The problem is that many people do care. Even more unfortunately, Americans seem to have a hard time distinguishing between what to ignore (Swift boat veterans paid to speak against John Kerry,) and what may be a real reflection of character (George Bush skipping out on his Air Force duty.)
JK, no biggie, guys! We just got it as an.pdf attachment from some nice citizen at "i.r.t3h.l33t.haxxr.@hotmail.com!" It also has a cool.exe file, which he assures me is a some security software to keep or data safe! I've installed it on all computers containing sensitive information, so no worries:)
But, you're missing one huge, gigantic, all seeing, (not even remotely) all knowing, all powerful entity; The Middle-Man. The one that actually makes the money. Programmers, artists, etc. do get paid based somewhat on sales, but mostly on efficiency; how cost-effective they are. The vast majority of what you pay actually goes towards advertising to get you to buy what you just bought.
Pop music will always all sound the same, Movies will always be bland and generic, and software will always be redundant. I know that in 'the good old days,' it was different. I, too, miss the good old days. But the sad reality? They never happened. Companies will always support what sells the best. And when it does, other companies will always make something disgustingly similar to the original to cash in on it's success. And it will work, until people get sick of the original, and move onto the next big thing. So whether you buy it or not, the big thing will still be the big thing.
Now, I'm not supporting piracy. I own windows, for pete's sake! Windows! But I don't advocate giving your money to faceless conglomerations that you don't know, care for, or even trust. Want your favourite band to make money? Go to a show, and buy the CD from them. They'll actually make some money off of it. If you wait and buy it at Sam Goody, the band will be lucky to see an entire penny of the profits. If you get it at cheapo? Not even a sliver. Want to support some really good movies? Start going to independent film festivals. As much as I enjoy they Pirates of the Caribbean series, Johnny Depp isn't affected by my attendance. Want to promote new and innovative games? Be a beta tester! Save them money on internal testing, and have fun while you do it.
I'm sure that every chinese person was going to go to the real disneyland, but with this fake one, what's the point? No need to spend thousands of dollars that you "have," no-sirree!
It's a freaking myspace page. Of his 160,000 "friends," how many are over 18? Perhaps 25%? Of those 40,000, how many are registered? Even a quarter of those? I doubt it. Maybe an eighth. So of those 5,000, how many actually care enough to vote? Probably half.
So there's one district of one county of one state, all 'won' because of the "hard work" on myspace. Totally worth... a few cents.
Have you tried one? Because they do, in fact, make some very good products.
Now, are they as good as steve says? Well, I'm sure to him they are. It's a matter of opinion, really. Are they frequently better than alternatives? Yes, they do make some very good hardware, and software. Is it better than some linux distros? Yeah. Better than all? No. Better than windows? By a long shot.
Just because people like apple doesn't make it bad.
Pfff, the government works for google. We allllll work for google, just with varying degrees of separation o_o
Anyway, yeah, it does sort of make it seem like that. "Oh yeah, we just take some kites with cameras on them, and set up a good delay. Ya know, like 30 seconds or so, eh? Then we launch it up real good, and when it comes down, sometimes it's a real good picture, yaknow, eh?"
So what you're saying is: never use any software, ever, or you deserve to have the holes that are present in ANY pice of software exploited. That's brilliant!
Now, was it pretty cool that he did this? Definitely. But he was an idiot for not coming forward with it sooner. It completely strips his "I was going to tell Cisco later!" argument of any credibility. If you want students to study vulnerabilities in software, you do it on a closed network; not one that is used by other students and faculty.
This is a school. Their primary concern should be education. That's why it's called a "school." If they have a research department, it's concern is research. And all the while, security keeps records confidential, and personal information secure.
But using some basic reasoning skills, what seems more likely:
1) A parasite, known to kill bees, and found widely in bee-hives, is killing bees, contributing to their declined population. or 2) Despite a complete lack of evidence, despite the sudden decrease in population, despite years of low populations having happened before the introduction of cell phones; cell phones did it.
How is this modded insightful? Did everyone miss the joke?
And really, you never fully own a lot of things. Your computer, for instance. You own it, but do you own the idea that created it? The right to manufacture more?
Well, the discs add up to a lot more than the player. With the cost of the discs (about $30 each for dual layer,) the equation would be something like this:
X = n/50*30+800 =.3n
Where n is storage, in Gb, and X is dollars. But of course, x occurs at a negative; about $-800, or n=2,666
So assuming the best, blu-ray is still never as efficient as external hard drives.
And whoever modded this troll? You're delusional. Off-topic? Yes. Flame-bait? Certainly. But not trolling.
Anyway on subject: Although silly and pointless, the regulations do contain one decent idea! Half of all news should be positive. Now, I'm not advocating ignoring the bad news. No, that is why the idea is insane. No, I mean find some positives. Those stories we used to see about how the blind woman with the ironically blind seeing eye dog found love in a deaf man with no sense of touch? Although typically nauseating, are a wonderful, and necessary break from the rest of the world. To be honest, if you have such a bleak point of view that you think happy news doesn't matter? Why bother living?
Huh... I never knew there was anyone offended by this, either. I suppose I can stop writing it, as well. Of course, part of me still wants to write something like that... *contemplates ranting about people paying $600 to be beta testers....*
Anyway, I can see the benefit to the hybrid player. Why sell two products when you can just have one? Less costs = more profits:) But I'm still not convinced there's a point to either format. DVD is fine. It's the same problem with XP Vs Vista, or as it was with N64 Vs Gamecube, etc. There's not much incentive to switch, since it's not a big enough improvement to justify the cost.. Better resolution? Sure. Enough for most to care? Not really. More space? Yup. Do most DVDs actually use the entire 4.7 Gb? No. Better copy-protection? Sure. Does ANY consumer care? No.
The problem is that many people do care. Even more unfortunately, Americans seem to have a hard time distinguishing between what to ignore (Swift boat veterans paid to speak against John Kerry,) and what may be a real reflection of character (George Bush skipping out on his Air Force duty.)
What, other than DiVX sucking?
:)
I know people that use real-player. Nothing will stop people that really don't want to pay
Which raises the point: Bob was a dumber idea than clippy.
:/
Also, can we tag this article flamebait?
Might we start with everyone having a computer in their home in the next ten years?

Just because people like apple doesn't make it bad.
And one of the key traits of jealousy is baseless attacks.
Come on, you can do it! Just say it with me: "Apple makes clearly superior products."
Wasn't that easy?
Mr. Reid was then quoted as saying "I don't want none o y'all wankers lookin' at my pr0n!"

Apparently they're all Minnesotan or Canadian.
I almost get the feeling you are the student in question here, given your irrational hostility. Here's the problem in simple terms:
He did something against the rules, he got caught, it's his own fault.
But, he should have come forward to a professor or administrator first; or just not used the bypass. THe way he did it wasn't exactly his best idea.
And, is windows really suited for use anywhere else?

I'm suing calculus, for undue mental distress.
Hmmmm, I think you're listening to too much air america :)
So, then, the point of life is misery? If so, I'll take the alternative.
Oh, if only I had friends in the FBI.

Honestly, I'd need a much bigger TV before I'd care :)
Which is precisely the problem. Too much upfront cost.
As soon as every teacher is more credible than Wikipedia, go ahead.
