As for waste that can't be converted to anything useful, would that matter much anyway since you are literally converting the particles to energy, then back into particles? You could pretty much make any element in the end, as long as you had enough energy.
I think the best we could do just now (or any foreseeable future) would be closer to a re-sequencer than a "replicator" to be honest. (unless that teleporter research brings anything useful before we have re-sequencing devices in commercial use...unlikely sadly)

Improving how cells are killed and "recycled" by neighbours would be money better spent IMO, well there is cancer research kinda already doing that.

I have to agree with you here
GoogleOS is already here in functionality, just not officially.

We have Docs & Spreadsheets, calenders, e-mail, chat, maps, image manipulation (to an extent).
And this is only the beginning (and this is not my words either, Google Blogs words, the official one)

The next year for Google will be getting more stuff out of beta (gmail for sure) and start to unify more of the interfaces.

Some people seem against "WebOSes", i don't think they are that bad.
Also, what if you are on a computer that doesn't have all these networking tools you need, pretty much every single OS from the past 5-10 years has a web browser.
And say you didn't have permissions to tweak networking settings either, another good reason.

I can get all (or better) programs that i use for Windows on Linux and quite a few i use regularly actually run better on Linux as well. (Blender for a good example)

I can see Windows being in trouble within the next 5-10 years as Mac support grows (it will eventually) since Apples move to x86.
As much as Microsoft continue to say it, regardless of the fact that Vista might be a gamers dream.. it certainly doesn't have me or several PC gamers i know going "nucking futs" for it.

One big reason as to why the "logging on to Live and seeing user-created content" won't happen is all down to one simple reason: it will take away from actual game developers. Thats why its solely tied in with the Creator Club thing, they don't want something like this to be BIG big, but big enough to inspire software developers/indie games developers into full-time game development. I mean look at Geometry Wars, that was (and still is) a very popular game, i remember even seeing on a forum that someone would get it simply to play that (no lies! honestly said that after he played it on his friends) I'm honestly not sure where Microsoft are going, they have been making too many contradictions that my mind has gave up following them. First 1080p doesn't matter, "hay guys, look what we can do!", then bringing down Sonys attempts at running Linux for user-created content, now they are doing it. ARGH! MY HEAD!
