  1. This means that VMWare goes out the window on Xen High-Performance x86 Virtualization Released · · Score: 1

I use VMWare at work because I still must use Windows for some dreary office tasks. If this works well, I would be able to chuck VMWare out! That is a very good thing, because VMWare is expensive and performance is pretty lackluster in my opinion.

  2. Now teachers can cheat as well on MIT Open Courseware with 500 Courses · · Score: 1

This makes it possible for teachers to steal lectures, handouts and lab assigments just as students have been able to plagiarize the work of others for years. Finally some equality restored!

More seriously, if publishing course materials this way becomes a trend, it will become much easier to compare different educational establishments even across national borders.

  3. Office 98 only exists for MacOS on MS vs. Open Source Office Suite Compatibility · · Score: 5, Informative

We used Office 2000, which succeeded in opening all Office files, but we venture to guess that Office 98, say, would have had difficulties with some of them.

The only version of Office that is called Office 98 is for MacOS, as far as I know. For Windows the more recent versions are 95, 97, 2000 and XP.

It is also very interesting to see the difficulties for Microsoft's Office suite when it comes to the interoperabilities between Office 97 on Windows and Office 98 on MacOS. At a company I worked at in 1998, we had both Macs and Windows machines, and amazingly enough, it was not trivial to make some documents written in Office 97 on a Windows machine work in Office 98 on a Mac (and vice versa).

  4. I Use Enlightenment on EvilWM - Minimalist Window Manager · · Score: 1
Being an enlightenment user I can only say this: EvilWM is just too ugly for me to ever want to use it. I have been an E user for approximately three years or so, and even though I still use more or less the same version (E 0.16.5), I still haven't seen anything that even remotely looks as good. I think it's pretty easy on system resources as well (at least compared to KDE and Gnome, don't know about these "minimalistic" WMs).

There are thre main reasons why I use E:

The pager. I have never used a better pager app than the one that's available in Enlightenment.

Speed. This WM is lightning fast. Switching between virtual desktops and moving windows around seems to be very efficiently implemented.

Configurability. In E you can configure desktop shortcuts to do anything short of making coffee.

The only issue I have with E is stability. Unfortunately it crashes once in a while (say once every two months or so), but it isn't so bad that I can't live with it.

  5. XDocs might threaten pdf in workflow environments on Microsoft takes on PDF · · Score: 5, Interesting

XDocs might be a threat to pdf in the field of online forms processing, as described in this zdnet article. Today pdf is used extensively in organizations that administer large quantities of paper forms that are sent to them.

But I don't think it can threaten pdf in other areas, because pdf is very, very established as the standard for online read-only documents. For instance, when I was looking for a new job earlier this year, I used Open Office to generate pdf files containing my applications that I sent to employers, and I didn't get a single complaint that they couldn't read it.

As I understood it, Corel Explorer has features that Konqueror will have in KDE 2. I'm not entirely sure, but I think I read on KDE's site that Konqueror (the new file manager oand web browser in KDE 2) will have the ability to browse SMB shares. In addition, I sure hope that the KDE control center will have the same Windows-like interface for changing screen resolution that the Corel Control Center has.

  7. Probably for the best on Gateway Sells Rights to Amiga Name · · Score: 1

I guess this was for the best, because Gateway haven't been logical or coherent in their management of Amiga. But then again, who has? The Amiga must be the most mis-managed computer in the history of Man Kind. It's totally unbelievable that such an incredible succession of inept businessmen have laid their greedy hands on the Amiga, just to ruin it a bit more. By now, miracles are needed if the Amiga is to resurrect.

    Sad but true, I'm afraid.

  8. OSS companies should contribute on Who Enforces the Open Source Licenses? · · Score: 2

I think that it would be a good idea if there were an organization of some sort that kept an eye on Open Source legal issues. Companies like Red Hat or SuSe that are comitted to OSS could then contribute funds to demonstrate just how comitted they are.

  9. Re:The Church on Windows 2000 to be banned in Germany? · · Score: 1

You're wrong. Executive Software is part of WISE (World Institute of Scientology Enterprises), and that bothers the Germans. As they say in the article, the Germans consider WISE an organisation committed to spying on and undermining the economy. The fact that individuals who are scientologists may have contributed to the coding of Linux, or that individuals employed by Red Hat (or others) may be scientologists wouldn't bring about the same reactions in Germany.

  10. Re:Microsoft tried to sink them? HOW???? on What the Amiga Pioneers Are Doing Now · · Score: 1

As far as I know, Microsoft didn't have anything to do with the killing off of the Amiga. Commodore did such a good job on their own, that any help from the competition was unnecessary. The problem was that they didn't seem to develop their product much after 1985. I think that was when the A500 came, and after that came nothing until the A1200 which came much too late (1991? 1992? Something like that).

Commodore also tried to make products that we, the Amiga community, didn't want. They made a gaming console type of thing, that I forget the name of, that they thought the Amiga 500 owners would buy instead of their beloved computers. We didn't want that. What we wanted was computers that continued to be as far ahead as they were in 1985! Just think! How good would the Amiga be if there were one that were as far ahead as it used to be?

The Amiga has been so badly handled in the past, that I have a very hard time believing in a second coming for it. There has been a lot of talk lately, but I have seen very little actual things happen. For now, Linux rules!

  11. AMD sales increase? on Possible EU Embargo on Pentium III · · Score: 2

A European wide sales embargo on Intel PIII would mean that AMD's K7 would have that market to itself... That would be a wet dream come true for AMD, I guess.

IF the embargo comes, and I must say I find it unlikely, it's a good thing that AMD makes excellent processors. There aren't any big European processor manufacturers that I know of, so this can't be some new brilliant protectionist policy.

    1. The so called bombes, developed by polish scientists and improved by Alan Turing & co, that broke the german enigma codes during WWII. This was truly advanced stuff in those days!
    2. As was stated in the article, putting Apollo 11 on the moon is truly amazing stuff.
    3. Xerox's invention of the desktop metaphor, which was later used by Apple, Microsoft and of coursse X Windows. This way of using computers will probably be dominant for a long time yet.
