But you don't really need to know all its features, or the whole standard library. For most applications, the basic knowledge of classes, pointers, templates and such is sufficient. Add Qt if you want graphical interface. None of these things takes a decade of learning.
If you want to get accepted into GSoC (at least by serious projects), you have to have something to show. It also requires a serious commitment, and it's expected that you'll continue working on that project. So it's not really a great way to start contributing.
On the other hand, I found the non-paid and non-binding Season of KDE much better for starting, because the pressure on both students and mentors is much lower.
I participated in both programs only as a student, so I have no information from the mentoring side.
I don't know, but that used to be the way with a HP printer and Ubuntu. All that was needed was the hplip package (or was it hpijs or both). Now I have ArchLinux and a Samsung, and I had to install drivers from the repository and manually click "Find new printers" in the CUPS web interface.

They are good for really long processes (OS or window-system startup, game loading), because they give confirmation that something is really happening. However, they have to have progress bars or at least something (I like KDE's system with icons) by which you can tell how far it is.
However, I have noticed a recent trend towards splash screens with an endless loop and no connection to what's actualy happening. Window 7 has such a screen, so does Ubuntu. This is something I'm very annoyed by, because I always think it's complete before it actually is.
Between not watching TV, having AdBlock on computers and AdFree on my phone, I can't remember the last time I saw one.
It has more gaps than any other system - you have to constantly mind them.
That's why I prefer the Moscow Metro. Because there, the gap minds you.
No, not really. The problem is that reality is increasingly out of touch with sense.
I see something more along the lines of https://xkcd.com/117/

Every American police department has at least one Porsche. Don't tell me Need4Speed lied to me?
Bad analogies. The 'c' in "car" does not stand for "wheeled". The first 'D' in "DVD" does stand for "digital". So you're actually undershooting it.
Yes, and most of them don't find anything wrong with it.
And you tell me this now after I've spent all my school years finding it?

You forgot Google. Burn in hell you heretic!
Yes, and it works quite well I noticed.
However, this patent will most likely include "in the cloud" and/or other buzzwords.
But his name was Steve! This fact alone should be enough to disperse any doubt of his contributions to society.
And Windows with a link to Ubuntu.

2. Eat an Apple

Ok, so let's all move at least 96,000km away from the base station.
Oh wait.

That's also how it works with HP printers on Linux. For others, you may have to select your model from the menu.
What's the problem here?
1. Children who think they can do anything.
2. Parents who make sure their children are not wrong.
A graphical GUI interface in Visual Basic. I hear its good for this internetz stuff.

You forgot to mention the Deflector Dish. That single mistake inverted the polarity of received mod points.
