  1. Re:Fake movie on Hollywood Is Losing the Battle Against Online Trolls (hollywoodreporter.com) · · Score: 4, Insightful

Turkey lost any and all of the credibility it had earned over the years when they "elected" Erdogan and his disgusting Muslim buddies to ruin the country.

  2. Yet another reason to hate Turks? on Hollywood Is Losing the Battle Against Online Trolls (hollywoodreporter.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

Honestly, sometimes I think these idiots deserve Sultan Erdogan. What a pathetic display this was. Of course there are plenty of good, decent, progressive Turks out there, and it's very sad that their voices can rarely be heard over these idiot children. Very sad indeed. I can't imagine anyone taking an IMDB rating seriously, but the fact that they are refusing to do anything to combat this is equally disturbing. "Nothing they can do" is total bullshit.

  3. Roku should either be dead, or adopting Android TV. It's obnoxious to have yet another incompatible, proprietary platform out there. Just like Nokia finally came into the Android fold, so should Roku. Their software leaves much to be desired.

  4. Soon to come: DRM chips in commodity memory modules that prevent them from being used in non-Apple hardware.

  5. What is this, 2003? Come on, that is ridiculous. Also, does anyone really care about wifi in this day and age of mobile data? If they had actually joined FON, I would be thrilled, but otherwise this is pretty pointless.

  6. Next: Android on YouTube Has a Secret 'Dark Mode' (thenextweb.com) · · Score: 1

Interesting that they're doing this now, after they ruined the Android UI by making it all-white. I would very much like to see this integrated as an option in Android, instead of having to reply on third-party overlays with Substratum and hackish "team black out" versions of apps.

  7. Re:Weird... on Alphabet Wants Its Lawsuit Against Uber To Play Out Publicly (recode.net) · · Score: 1

Used to? They still do. Uber and Lyft just showed up for me yesterday. Google is ultimately an advertising company and I doubt they're going to take them down over this. I'm just pissed because I actually followed on of those initial Uber adverts when it was first added to Maps that offered a $10 or $15 credit on your first ride. Nope. No credit at all. Assholes.

  8. Should be released as Open Source on Alphabet Wants Its Lawsuit Against Uber To Play Out Publicly (recode.net) · · Score: 1

All of the code should be released as Open Source. There's no reason I should have to trust my very *life* to proprietary software. Make Uber pay Google for using their software, then force *both* companies to release all of the code and continue development jointly, *in public*. This is the answer.

  10. Time to free the data on How Google Book Search Got Lost (backchannel.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

Google Books always seemed like a great idea, but the idea of the search giant owning all of the data always made me incredibly uncomfortable. This data should be in the public domain. Authors should feel *privileged* to submit their works for inclusion in the database, not fighting it. It seems that, at least recently, Google Books has served primarily as a means to drive book *sales*. That's not an admirable goal. It's time for Google Books to be converted to a community-driven effort, like Wikipedia. Release all the data under a Free database license that ensures the data can not be used commercially and allow the community to help with the effort. This would be an incredible achievement for humanity in general. Oh well, one can dream...

  11. Yuri did the same thing as a monkey. I know it's an honour to be "the first" and all that, but he definitely doesn't deserve any of the acclaim for the accomplishment. Glad to see this, even if the accolades are coming a little late.

  12. It's not as bad as you're suggesting, since those tasks the vehicles are carrying out are currently being done by some other means, that would no longer be necessary. Still, it's a good point and why we need to prohibit individual ownership of these vehicles.

  13. In what universe is 13 *years* just to hit 25% "very quickly?" We need to put a plan in place that *prohibits* humans driving cars at all. 2030 seems like a good goal for that. Only then will self-driving cars realise their full potential, in terms of safety, efficiency, environmental savings. Individuals need to be prohibited from purchasing vehicles, unless they can justify the expense for a work-related reason or living out in the middle of nowhere.

  14. Disgusting on Canadian Town Picks Uber For Public Transit (cnet.com) · · Score: 1

I actually love Uber, but this is a *terrible* move. Two of the greatest advantages of public transit: traffic reduction and reduced carbon emissions, will not be realised with this scheme. Car sharing is a much better idea, so that hundreds of Uber vehicles aren't just randomly driving around all the time pumping CO2 into the air. It would also be more convenient and far less expensive not having to pay drivers.

Once automated vehicles are a reality, this would be a great solution, but we're a long way away from that. Even in that case, people should be expected to share their ride as much as possible.

  15. I imagine (hope?) this means they'll be switching to Wayland. The only reason Mir existed was for their mobile convergence platform and Unity 8. Without them, there's no reason to use it.

  16. Why would they do that when Kubuntu is already excellent? Also I can see no compelling reason to compete with Mint.

  17. Wait, too late. I'm blown away by this announcement! Canonical has been *so* invested in Unity over the years, in spite of a ridiculous amount of resistance from the community. I don't think Unity 7 is awful, though I certainly welcome the move to pure GNOME. Unity 8 has indeed been a disaster, but I really wanted Ubuntu Phone to take off. Particularly once Android support is added. I really hope this effort will continue, as Google is closing Android more and more each release.

My biggest interest is in retaining locally integrated menus. I find these incredibly useful. I can't stand a global menu bar, but reclaiming the screen real-estate menus take up is a huge advantage. I know many GNOME apps have Chrome-style master menus in their title bars, but I would much rather have a full menu available with shortcut keys and on hover.

I don't understand how anyone with any technical aptitude could choose a Samsung mobile device. They don't respect their customers at all. The thing's loaded with proprietary software, locked bootloaders, and all manner of other user-unfriendly "features." Not to mention they cripple Android with buggy, bloated software. And all that's before you even consider phones starting on fire and exploding. You might as well buy some crappy Apple product—seems like the difference is negligible these days. If only Android had been released under a responsible license like the GPL we wouldn't have to deal with this shit. They are incredibly overpriced as well. Just say no!
