  1. BitTorrent has Live TV Streaming? on BitTorrent is Shutting Down Its Live TV Streaming Service (variety.com) · · Score: 1

News to me. Can't say I'm surprised it's getting shut down!

I honestly don't understand how anything live could be transmitted via BitTorrent in the first place. Unless it's some kind of deviation from the standard protocol that forces all the parts to be in order? Seems like it would still be substantially delayed from "live."

  2. I just adore BrickerBot more and more each story I read about it. This is the best solution, and sadly the financial impact is the only way to make these companies take security seriously.

It absolutely is if they are prohibiting him from publishing his research. That has nothing to do with whether he is allowed to use the title professionally. It's not like they just said he had to remove the word engineer and then it was okay. It had nothing to do with protecting the public interest.

  4. Does this apply to software engineers as well? What about a custodial or maintenance engineer? I mean, it's one thing if you're portraying yourself as an engineer to clients or the public for securing a job *in engineering*. That could be construed as a consumer protection. This is just completely idiotic.

  5. Re:T-mobile mvnos on Slashdot Asks: Which Wireless Carrier Do You Prefer? · · Score: 1

That's pretty great, particularly because you still have unlimited 128 kbps data, the plan is only about the amount of "high sped" data you have. On the 2G plan, $35 for the first 3 months, then $200/year after that? That's hard to beat.

  6. Google Fi on Slashdot Asks: Which Wireless Carrier Do You Prefer? · · Score: 1

Why choose? I prefer to be on T-Mobile, Spring, *and* U.S. Cellular. This thirst for unlimited data is ridiculous. What I want more than anything is a cheap data-only plan, so I can just use Google Voice/Hangouts for the 3 voice calls I make a year.

  10. 39% of U.S. households? What? on FCC Takes First Step Toward Allowing More Broadcast TV Mergers (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

I've never heard of a broadcast TV station having a range of more than around a hundred kilometres. How could any broadcast station ever begin to reach anywhere near 39% (49 million!) households? Even stations in New York City are only reaching 19-20 million people, according to the FTC.

  11. So step off. It's actually really easy. Stand up for software Freedom. If you stay, you get what you deserve.

  12. People who choose to use proprietary operating systems need to accept whatever their corporate overlords spoon-feed to them. I hope this "developer" (normally referred to as a cracker) goes to jail for violating some kind of DMCA or license agreement or something.

"We" have done this. Over and over and over. XMPP, Diaspora, GNU social, etc. etc. The fact is, apps these days are all about marketing. Getting the plebs to use anything that isn't advertised and made to seem trendy and popular will never happen. The only hope we have is getting these larger corporations on board with standards-compliance, and sadly that seems to have disappeared as well.

Usenet and e-mail may have been lacking in certain regards, but they at least adhered to an interoperable standard that allowed people to use whichever client they want. This advantage cannot be underestimated.

  16. I don't have any of them installed! I must be awesome. Or something. I do have Messenger Lite installed, though, just because so many people insist on using it to communicate. It's very frustrating. I wish Facebook would find a way to add RCS compatibility for Messenger and WhatsApp. Standards are a good thing. *sigh*

Are they just a bunch of Apple fanboys, or trying to piggyback on the fruit's recent popularity and trendiness? It's amazing how quickly people forget what terrible machines they were at the time. There's a reason Apple practically went out of business! Then again, I suspect all the iPhone-loving millennials never even knew in the first place.
