Yeh dude! I canceled my cable too, but then the modem stoped working. What's up with that? Oh well, that was $45/month I didn't have to pay anymore.
I hear you on that french fry thing. I once gave a girl a DNA sample and she came back with a whole person that looked LIKE ME. Talk about recombinant DNA techonogy and free stuff, wow.
OK, let's parse. I suppose this is what you mean by "hypothetical market":
Simple imaginary scenario. Generating electricity causes soot which causes cancer. When you pay for the electricity at cost, someone else's health subsidizes your extra-large refrigerator.
The plant where I work, a boiling water reactor, makes 1 GigaWatt carbon and soot free.
Now back to Joe San Diego. He's got no idea what you are talking about because you make no sense. He hears you blithering on about costs, but all he sees is a decline in his standard of living. I think he's going to get tired of you retoric like this:
To me it means first that the cost of every product should reflect not only how much money it took the producer to produce it, but also the cost of cleaning up the mess that third parties are left with as a result of both its consumption and its production. Second, green means that we should not party at the expense of our grandchildren. Taken together, what I want to say simply is that green means fair. But then again, I am a green-red colorblind.
Dude, that's so queer and jargon heavy it would even make Stalin cringe. The costs of production are always passed on as long as they are mandated by law. Disposal costs are also passed on, so long as the law requires the disposal in question, and it generally does. The regulated utilities are garanteed a certian percentage profit, all costs are passed on to Joe San Diego. We are all paying for these things, I'm afraid of what you might want to charge for.
You do not have a political future. You missunderstand what the people want because you think you know better than they do. This would be OK if you displayed any thechnical epertise, but you don't. Your arrogance has made you blind and incomprhensible.
The estimate is 100 years, they we will be forced to dig up and use spent fuel with all the burnup we are putting on it now. Reprocessing alone can take care of this problem but breeding is better. Plutonium is not the nastiest stuff you can ever deal with, Jimmy Carter and other anti "military-industrial complex" types were afraid of people making bombs with the stuff. Suprise, suprise, 30 years later everyone's got the bomb anyway.
If Joe San-Diego doesn't want a powerplant in his backyard, I assume that is because it disturbs him to some degree. If you want a powerplant in his backyard, I suggest you offer Joe enough to get him to change his mind.
While the attempted environmental extortion is admirable, the world will not reward people like this. Reality is that Joe San-Diego did not want a powerplant in his back yard yesterday. Today, he has to pay an absorbident amount for an artificially limited commodity.
Poor Joe. He's going to suffer rolling blackouts and all that. Burgalars will rob him while his alarm is off. His food will rot when the fridge is turned off. His house will mold and mildew while his AC is off, his air indoors will be worse than that outside and his health will suffer. His children will get asthma and he'll have to pay for expensive medicine and hospital trips. His trafic lights will be unreliable and his car rides will take longer and be more dangerous. One day, after an automobile accident at a broken traffic light, his hospital might loose power and all the OR gadgets will sputter and fail.
Oh well, that's too bad for Joe.
Yes, Bogus man, you have no clue.

Somewhere along the line I picked up a degree in Nuclear Physics. It is somewhat bogus since the research I did was in particle physics...
I agree. To speak with athority on power generation you should get a degree in Nuclear Engineering, work in a plant, and know what you are talking about.
The only reason Chernobyl went up and Three Mile Island did not is luck. Both reactors were designed using inadequate computing power. Chernobyl went critical because there was a region of positive feedback in the operation cycle that was not uncovered using the two dimensional simulation techniques used in both the USSR and the US at the time.
BzzzT! Wrong, this had nothing to do with inadequate computer simulations. US reactors, at least, were tested out with models, then prototypes and pilot stations. These are the kinds of things men have been using instead of computers for all of human history but the last 40 years or so.
Both accidents were caused by operators overcoming automated saftey features. At Chernobyl, the operators were testing safety features at low reactor power levels and outside electricity turned off. They were not supposed to do that. At TMI, operators failed to believe their insturments and turned off systems that would have shut the plant down safely. There the similarities end.
Chernobyl suffered a steam explosion and uncotrolled release because of poor design goals. It was a dual purpose reactor providing both electricity and plutonium. The core was water cooled and graphite moderated, the graphite serving to promote plutonium ingrowth. It was also an easy access reactor, with nothing between it and the world but heavy concrete blocks. When the operators got everything just wrong and core power jumped from 0 to 1000% in a thousanth of a second or so, they were doomed. The heat released immediatly precluded control rod insertion, leaving the core overpowered and uncontrollable. It then got hot enough to make a steam and hydrogen explosion that blew those concrete blocks off with such force that they destroyed the refueling crane above. Without further barriers to release, the contents of the core were free to kill operators and make a mess for miles around. Nasty, but it won't happen at a US plant because we don't have easy access reactors. We have contained reactors desinged only to make power.
Like most lies, the DMCA is vauge. This is so it can be interpreted favorably to the creeps that put it up. Its language can be compared to any of the psycho bable from the last 8 years of Clinton rule. You can also compare it to bimbo talk:
I just need some space to figure this out.
I'd go on, but it's hard for me to think like that.
The next step is the death of all analog phone lines. They are a public service many people no longer wish to subsidize. If you look at your phone bill, you will realise that the $9 basic service is really costing you $35 a month after all of the taxes and what not are added in, before any long distance charges. This is more than the cost of cell phone service. As more people understand this and get comfortable living without a land line there will be fewer paying custormers to service those land lines and they will go tits up. DSL may be the only thing that land lines are good for.
Kitty Hawk - Two madcap bike makers today became the first men to take to the skys in powered heavier than air machines. Their brief flight marks an era in history, but it will take years for anything useful to come of it.
"Damn fools are going to break their necks!" observed one bystander, R. Dvork. "And what for? I could walk faster than that thing. They will never replace my horse."
Rumors are circulating about the craft being used by the Army for observations. The craft's frailty stands against it. In fact, the first one blew over and broke.
But wait, there's much much more!

What a Mega Troll this John Dork is. A Google search pulled up 422 hits for his full name. This article , which proclaims him "digerati" also just about defines troll to describe him.
Here is a list of BS articles from the last year of so. ZDnet was nice enough to inclued a description of each. "Stop the Insanity! If an OS could rest in place for five years, computing would vastly improve." Is an amusing one.
There's more but I'd rather go look at a radioactive contaminated area right now.
Arab, mostly Islamic, slavers in East Africa were some of the worst. British explorers in the 19th century found the people there overwhelmed and shattered. Mohammad Ali had 10,000 slaves put to death when he died.
Other abductions practiced by men who professed Islam were even more sinister. The pre Napolianic rulers of Egypt were homosexuals who propagated themselves by abducting boys from the Rusian steps. Most of us are familiar with cartoon harems and their eunich gaurds. Think about it a while. The behavior of Turks as they invaded East Europe rivals anthing in the Spanish Inquisition.
All men do such things, regardless of religion. Hindus, Jews, Budists, Shintoist, have all commited attrocities. Only the neo pagans under Hitler or Stalin's neo atheists have proved more cruel.
I don't pay my government to spy on me or buy data like that. If a private firm wishes to spend money tracking my root beer drinking habits and it involves no coersion, so be it. My government should not spend a dime either compiling such data or looking at it.
The BIOS of my Athalon mobo sees LILO as a boot sector virus. I'm not sure what it would do if I let it because I turned the machine off and disabled the stupid check. A protective feature that could not be turned off would be an easy way to implement what you fear.
Crash? MS "optimized" hardware, I can't belive it!
Red Hat and Debian run my "complex" general purpose cyrix mediaGX boxes just fine. 98 on the other hand has BSoD fits every other day. Surely, the Xbox will not run as well under either. I have my doubts about the Xbox running Linux at all and kind of wonder why anyone would bother.
More power to the folks who work on this, but this one is not for me. There are so many platforms to work with that are less encumbered and do really cool things. If MS treats its hardware specs like software specs, this box will be be different and broken every year.
I am a judicial clerk for the most important judge in the country on tech issues right now.
Keep reading here, those courts need lots of help.
Now for logic. Mean what you say and say what you mean. This would be much easier for big companies if they did not think they could OWN common and popularly used phrases like "priceless". Without such arrogance there would be no need for drones and their pointless missives to unreal infringers of property that requires very little intelect to steal from the public. This arrogance is compounded when people like you, impressed by the magnitude and costs of the whole insane chase, conclude that the property in question must be real because fools have spent so much defending it. Behavior like this gives the whole concept of intelectual property and all of it's participents (especially you!) a bad name.
That's right, it is an add campain over a changed default, and we are it's first suckers:
The Clippy site will include e-mail and a variety of "viral" marketing tools that Microsoft hopes users will use to e-mail portions of the ad material -- like songs and presentations animated with Macromedia Flash -- to one another.
Hmmm, like "I love you" or "Millisa" or just a mail flood? MS does know virus and DoS. Yes, that stupid animation was a DoS, my computer churning to do things I didn't ask it to instead of what I want it to. I can only imagine what kinds of trojans are going to end up in all those cute clippy films they expect people will mail to EVERYONE they know. How I hate that. I'm sure to get five of these things a day in my junk mail accounts. Grrrr!
For a large company like Mastercard, it is a worthwhile investment to have a staff of cubicled drones, supervised by a third-rate attorney, who is in turn supervised by far better atttorneys up the line, to mail merge and send threatening letters to people who refer to their trademarks, trade dresses, or other intellectual property in manners which they would not prefer.
That's it! We are laughing at this stupid waste of money! Most people here do not think such an abuse of email and the law is a good business practice to be implemented by "far better attorneys" aka clueless corporate twits. They may want people to roll over, for fear of not knowing any better, but what they've got is this burst of laughter in their face.
Now get back to droning! If your PHB sees this he might, just might, UNDERSTAND and fire the whole cubicle floor of you loosers. If he really gets it, he might quit spending tons of money on adverts and drop rates to drum up business. Duh.
Then there is the government and big business (one and the same...thanks Bush) spying on which television shows I recorded from afar.
Isn't it a little early to be blaming the Bush? I'd rather blame the jerk who oversaw the last 8 years of mega mergers, tax increases, rights decay and general stupidity.
To think Orwel, think ubiquitous ever connected web cams. Think of not being able to turn them off. Think of the police watching them all the time. Think of Socialist London. Orwell was English and his party afiliation was Engsoc. He only missed by 20 years and nuclear war. One is sure to bring the other, then he will have been right.
If you live in Sunny California, and the dispatcher thinks he needs to reduce some of his "major loads". A 90F house is not what I want to find when I get home.
What is all this mizer BS about?! You are going to loooooose $ trying to save on your AC bill if you thermally cycle your house enough to make humidity, mold, rot, termites, and moths happy. Air Conditioning was invented to give us all filtered hygenic air of the kind only a few can afford to breath is some of the world's nicest places. Build more nuclear power plants and live your life in health and comfort!
I hate all of this stuff. Faced with scarcity, nice people think of ways to sacrifice themselves, jackasses think about how to sacrifice their neighbors, and smart people fix the problem. Let's be smart, please.
Thanks, you just saved me a little money. I will not be buying a DVD player to replace my still working VCR until that little screw you goes away. Now I see the real reason DeCSS was squashed.
Of course, I should have known it would be that way. Some dumb asses think adverts should be put everywhere. Commercial free telivision? Sure, it's called cable, just pay us $40/month and... right!
How do you square that with the fact that diesel vehicles are responsible for more than half of US air polution? You can't.
Diesel has many strong points, but cleanliness is not one of them. It's true that you get less NOx because deisel does not burn as hot as gassoline. This is because diesel is made of heavier chains that may or may not burn perfectly as they break down. The result is the light hydrocarbon and soot exhaust we all associate with standing behind a city bus. It's not easy to clean up a mess like that. Think of oil burning locomotives and ships from the first half of the 20th century. Nasty. It can be cleaned up a bit but there is a cost.
Internet Appliances can be more than they are.
I can't wait to put a cell phone on my visor, and I know that these things should be much cheaper. With 256Megs of RAM going for less than $75, much more can go into one of these little things for much less than is being charged. As limited as it is, my crummy little visor makes my laptop seem encumbered.
In the mean time the price differential should be all the business model a reputable company needs to make plenty of money.
Yeah, but 90% of/.ers wouldn't believe them anyway.
90% is too low. No one should believe and report anything they can not verify themselves.
If comments are a guide, the other 10% are making up excuses for the sneaky blood suckers. This is much too high, as are their mutual masturbation +5 scores.
