GPL V3 does not keep people from checking the version of their packages. It's only a GPL violation if you keep the user from modifying or changing their own software.

Yes, anyone can analyze the official source code, but not one can see the source code that was compiled and installed on any given machine by a [random] technician.

That's what package checks, like those used by Debian, are good for. A state or county can set up a package repository and be sure that any qualified technician can get and install it without trouble. Indeed, the process is fool proof enough that the local election commission can do it themselves. This is much better than having a single company do everything, especially a company with a shady record like Dibold.

  3. Don't confuse DRM with Security. on Will the Next Election Be Hacked? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe we should just GET RID OF ELECTRONIC VOTING until somebody can make uncrackable DRM software.

DRM has no place in an election. DRM is about restricting the rights of a computer owner. WiMP, for example, has DRM but the OS that uses it is still unfit for network use. DRM is not what the local election commission needs to keep elections honest.

What they need is free and secure software. If the software is free, it can be inspected by anyone with any doubt. If it's secure, inspections won't harm the vote. The problem is that Dibold and M$ own the software used in voting machines and anyone using them has to take the machine's honesty as a mater of faith rather than knowledge. That kind of centralized power is easy to abuse. When election commissions use free software, they own the equipment and can verify it's honesty. This increases the number of people overseeing the process, which makes it exponentially more difficult to rig. The public should accept nothing less.

Only a free election will be an honest election.

Architects are great for making buildings and they should be up to speed with basic layout, fire codes and all that. The devil being dealt with here is interior details.

An Interior Designer is what you really want for most office layout. Interior Design focuses on how to use interior spaces, and there's a large subspecialty dedicated to office space. They deal with color, lighting, workflow, power and communication details. The same reflections that waste window light might improve audio privacy, but that's a high price to pay for the floor space. Actual line of site privacy is provided by the partition which divides the desk in two, creating two ... cubicles.

So what? How many years did it take XP to cross the 50% line? Five years on it's barely crossed 80% of the Windoze market share. IDC estimates there are only 400,000,000 XP users today. Each new version of Windoze has taken longer to penetrate because each has been that much more outrageously bloated than it's predecessor. If nothing else has changed, it will be shocking to see so many Vista users in two years.

Changes make their target even less likely. M$'s established users have had enough of the upgrade train. 95 to 98 was bad, 98 to XP was worse and XP to Vista is freaking impossible. You can only fool people so many times and they have plenty of options now. Free alternatives are not only good enough, they are better in many ways. Even if you don't want to go free, you can go Mac and not spend as much as Vista will require. Worse for M$, a large portion of the new computer market is going to come from Europe and the developing world and free software enjoys tremendous advantages there. M$'s language support can't hold a candle to free software even where people have the money to be owned by a US company. Where people don't really have money to waste on basic operating software, free software rules. M$'s growth potential is strictly limited and their user base will collapse soon after Vista flops. The monopoly is based on lies which will vanish in two years.

It's all downhill for M$ now. Most people realize the M$ monopoly is in trouble. It's supposed strength is not going to sell Zune, which will be yet another failure of theirs to own the entertainment market. That failure is another punch to the M$ monopoly myth. It can't happen soon enough.

  16. OK, I can do that. Copyright needs real reform. on Hollywood Says Piracy Has Ripple Effect · · Score: 1

Show their assumptions & conclusions to be faulty.

I don't need to read their bullshit report to do that, the answer is right in the US constitution. Recall the copyright establishment clause of section eight with me:

    To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries;

Notice the term "limited"? DRM is forever and therefore unconstitutional.

More fundamentally, the reason for copyright has nothing to do with publishers, or publishers making money. The motivator is the public good. The whole purpose of the limited exclusive franchies granted for works of art and inventions is to grow the public domain. The founding fathers wanted people to share instead of keeping things to themselves. They knew that education only comes from sharing and that no one can advance the state of the art unless they are familiar with that state to begin with. At the time, they thought it would help to encourage artists and inventors by creating an exclusive use right at the cost of free speech and action. The term they thought fair, two hundred and twenty years ago, when paper and publishing was fiercely expensive? Fourteen years.

So, the fundamental assumptions of the copyright warriors are totally bogus:

    • Ideas and works of art are not the natural property of the creator and should not have owners.
    • Copyright was not established for the benefit of creators, mush less publishers.
    • Lower costs of duplication do not require harsher copyright laws, they mandate the end of copyright as we know it.

The public good will be served much better when patents are issued for real inventions and other works of art are once more made public domain while relevant, that is within the life span of the author. Things are so bad right now that no laws at all would be an improvement. Yes, this will bring more art and more money for more people. Education makes art and people will always pay for both.
