  1. We all knew this was coming on EFF Files First Anti-DMCA Lawsuit · · Score: 1

It's about time the DMCA got it's day in court. It will be interesting to see how the judge rules on this case. IMHO, I could see the DMCA being struck down, and a group of lawyers with a technical background (probably the lawyers handling the cases against 2600 and Napster) will draft a new copyright act that will protect copyright, but allow for fair use online, and propose that before Congress. I'm sure with such copyright law as the one suggested, corporations would not be able to control the flow of information via licensing or other insane methods.

  2. I disagree with this statement on Hormel Gracefully Concedes On SPAM vs. Spam · · Score: 1

  3. Can't we give CoS a taste of their own medicine? on Scientology Critic Flees U.S. Over Usenet Posts, Pickets · · Score: 1

If CoS wants to play hardball with the legal system, I say that the next time CoS hauls someone into court, the defendant's testimony and evidence should bring into consideration by the jury the legal tactics used by CoS, and hopefully, the jury will rule in the favor of the defense, and perhaps it will bring some momentum to keeping the CoS goons in check.

  5. One incident I saw on Technology vs. Cheating at the University of Virginia · · Score: 1

In the Databases class that I took this semester, I recalled a incident of cheating among three students (one of which is a grad student). The three students submitted an assignment which was to write views in SQL. The three students turned in three copies of the same SQL code. The TA caught this by looking at the code, and saw that there were bugs in the code in the same places on all three submissions. As a grade, each student got 1/3 of the total points that the assignment was graded as.

  6. It's Linux from now on on New Microsoft Feature: Planned Obsolescence · · Score: 1

Seems like registering for UNIX Systems Administration last semester was a smart move on my part. If Rich Uncle Billy Gates wants to play around with license agreements, then all this consumer has to say is "NO WAY! I'm switching to Linux, whether you like it or not!" Besides the money I save on a licensing fee is better off going into my gas tank.

  8. They're barking up the wrong tree on Gaming Companies Being Sued Over Columbine · · Score: 1

On Friday, Thompson made public a letter he has sent to John Carmack, one of the original "Doom" creators and founder of Texas-based id Software, on behalf of the Todd family.

He called on Carmack to prohibit the sale and distribution of all video games rated for mature audiences to children under 17 - and to do it by April 30. The letter did not specifically threaten a lawsuit, but the statute of limitations for Evan Todd won't expire until he turns 18 in June.

The software developers are not responsible for distribution of the games to the end users. I believe the letter should go to the store where the game was purchased at. I hope that this case gets thrown out, just like the one mentioned after the shooting in Paducah, KY. There's no merit behind this suit.

I applaud Sean's father for standing up and saying "Enough is enough". As mentioned earlier in this discussion, if there are any /. lawyers out there that want to help out here, please do so.

I remember one day in high school, where a student came up behind me, and knocked me off balance. The staff who witnessed the event saw one student and hauled him off to the principal's office, and then a few minutes later, sent an aide to the class that I was in to call me down, where this student apologized to me. One thing that I noticed was that the student that got punished was not the student that I believed commited the act against me. One lesson that bullies need to learn is that their actions against one person may end up affecting more than that one person.

  23. What I feel needs to be done on Improving CS Education? · · Score: 1

I'm about to graduate from Kent State with my CS degree. In the five years that I spent in taking classes (both in CS and in Computer Technology), I have discovered the following.

More money needs to be spent on upgrading the labs. If the university is spending money on new construction and renovations to existing buildings, then there should be some money budgeted to improving the education. By improving the education is how you get your students to stay in the university.

Professors need to care more for their students. Of all the professors that I've had, only four have shown that they care about their students learning the subject matter. The classes that I've taken with these profs, I have done well in.

Exams either need to be programming projects, or open book. Outside of the university, people are not going to tell you that you can't use any references to complete a programming assignment. You also can't learn every single detail about everything that is taught in any CS program. This is why I kept all of my books, and only study if I really need to commit something to memory.

Why would someone want to waste valuable programming energy to do such a silly task of getting first post. I've done first post myself a while back, and I did it the old way, by luck that a fresh article got posted. I'll also admit that when the article ran about one of the original developers for Unix quitting, I had moderator access at the time, and modded up the FP because I thought it was funny. Several others did the same.
