What do you mean if politicians get involved? They are already involved. They have been. It's all fun and games until it's not in your favor. I'm not the biggest Microsoft-lover out there, but I dont' hate them by any means. I have one of their certifications. I also don't like some of the things they do. But when the political mess was all AGAINST Microsoft (and it still is I might add), all the *nix camps sat back and laughed about it and said it was great -- about time. But when Microsoft figures out that this whole case was caused because they forgot to grease some palms along the way, everyone gets upset. Politics works both ways. This whole charade was made because someone wasn't happy that MS had all that money and they weren't giving any of it to "compaign contribution" or lobbying as they like to call it. OK. So this may be flamebait of sorts, but it's neccessary flamebait. You can't have a discussion about this without stepping on someone's toes.
My point in this whole jumbled rant is that the politicians always try to get involved. Sometimes you like what they are "restricting". Sometimes you are NOT. You cheer for the governement when you like what they are doing and you complain when you don't. My contention is that you should complain all the time. Government regulation will bite you in the ass in the end. Whether it's an agreement between the Gov't and the NAACP to remove GOOD literature from the school system, a fight to take the right to freedom OF religion away from people (notice it says freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion), or whatever your cause. If you support the governement in taking away those rights because you don't agree with them, I promise you it will come back to haunt you later. This is no different. If you don't want the governement stepping in when Linux or BSD or whatever OS makes it's way to the top, then I highly suggest you support Microsoft in this struggle to free themselves from Government regulation. It will only restrict YOUR freedom by siding with the government.
Nuff said - kill my karma and flame me for whatever reason you feel neccessary.
The question is, if the ISP drops the site due to being scared of the legalities, could you consider that harassment? You know the automobile industry had similar problems back in the day. A new company would start up and the current manufacturers would threaten their suppliers not to supply to them. I know this is a whole other situation and it wasn't dealing with patents, but the premise was the same. They have threatened those who supply your domain with a home in hopes that they will drop your domain. Could this sort of thing be considered harassment? I don't know. I'm not a lawyer. However, I would send a NICE letter to the school stating your disagreement with the situation and imply the fact that they should not harass you further. If they want to speak to you about the domain, they should speak to YOU and not the ISP.
I tried that and it failed. I went to http://lpf.ai.mit.edu/ and that worked. Don't mean to correct ya, just helping anyone else out that wanted to hit the site.
This is awesome. Although, in some states, a non-compete which doesn't allow you to continue working in your field anywhere else is illegal (Namely south carolina). OK, so if you wanted to play games on a small machine, why wouldn't you buy a gameboy? Aren't they just a bit less expensive and now come in color? Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but I just can't imagine forking out a couple hundrd bucks on a machine so I can play sim city on the airplane and then pretend I'm looking up a contact when the boss sits down next to me. Either he's going to think I'm very slow at looking things up ("you've been looking for that phone number for an hour now"), or that the palm he bought me is useless. *shrug*

If anyone ever argues that this country is run by the corporations that exist here, simply take a look at how alike a politician is to a corporation. Both of them do what it takes to make the "other guy" look bad instead of trying to actually make a change for the good. If half the energy they spend on bashing each other would be spent on improving their work, our country would be 10 times more advanced than it is now, IMHO.
I find it amuzing when people say "it wasn't really productive". Productivity is objective. I can sit all day and not "accomplish" anything physical, yet in my mind I have sorted out many things. Sure, people would say I'm lazy and using excuses. But I'm not.
The cDc has been "productive" as long as I have known of their existance. Whether playing practical jokes or coding BO or other hacks. They have contributed, at the very MINIMUM, fear to the software society. Enough fear to make SOME software vendors actually test their products before shipping. Aside from that, I could go on for hours on what they have done "productively", but that wouldn't be very productive now would it? *grin*
It's not. This is the second one that went this way along with a few posts. I guess it's more of a popularity contest than anything. Someone didn't like my.sig or something.
The concept is wonderful. I'm so sick of having to do half of my business on the web only to have to wait for an application or something else to hit snail mail before I can continue. I had to do this with my online back, with E-Trade, with credit cards and with my credit report. Mostly financial information needs a true signature to complete. While this is a great step in the right direction.. almost.. there is a problem. We not only have someone storing a signature on file to use elsewhere but the criminal aspect is immense. So you require realtime signatures ? Fine, I could code a program to take your signature and not only "re-write" it real-time, but vary it slightly from each signature so that it appears not to be a carbon copy. It's going to be almost impossible to do this realistically. I would almost prefer, for my own safty, that this not be legally binding. Signatures would have to be "disputable" like credit card transactions are now.
"The important thing about Linux (and Open Source and the Web) is that it shifts the balance of power back to the independent developers, the underfunded experimental coolness-of-the-thing-itself startup-type hackers"
For the time, yes it does bring back that power and the interest in the changing/hacking/creating a new environment that fits your exact needs. However, if one thing has proved evident in everything I have ever experienced, money motivates all too well. My concern is that all the recent hype and corporate adoption of *nix will corrupt what most of the geeks find to be "experimental coolness-of-the-thing-itself". What's to happen when those how have set the standards for these platforms pass on? Just look at what happened to the internet once John Postel left us.
Woman was formed after man. See verse 18 through 25. No offense taken. Most creationists are, however, correct to a point in their belief that we "shouldn't play God". Let's consider that when the monks copied the scrolls of the Bible, they would take a bath before writing the name of God. This was out of respect. Similarly, "most creationists" also do not want man to upset God in trying to "take His place" so to speak. I just happen to believe differently. God will reveal all when His Kingdom is at hand.
You know, back in the day, a man would help another man shingle his house for.... a meal or another favor of equal value. I say we all start using this same system again. Would make it hard for a tax audit no? The SEC amoung other bloated corporate/government agencies are doing business as usual to keep the rich people rich and in power and the poor people poor and out of power. Anyone read Animal Farm recently?
Ahh, but I do mean this to a point. While it may be possible for you to hunt me down and kill me, that would only be possible if The Lord had willed it to happen. Had God not wanted us to have the ability to re-create on this world, He would have made it impossible. For one such example, let us think of how many have gone after the "somewhat discovered" Noah's Ark. My belief is that God does not want man to actually be able to photograph and document this because he doesn't want people worshiping the ship. Everyone that has been near this thing has either died or couldn't get close enough to tell you with 100% certainanty what it was. God doesn't want it to happen, or doesn't want it to happen yet and therefore it hasn't.
At one time, I had thought that smaller, more specialized processors would be needed to handle different devices. In stead of having a huge processor (PII/PIII) that can do everything, we would have many different chips performing single tasks. This may be so when we get down to intelligent appliances. However, with the age of the pda/cellphone/etc etc upon us I have to wonder just how small we can get and still have good functionality. You had an article about IBM's wearable PC coming out next year. With that and the pdQ and more devices to come, I tend to think the smaller the better. If we have a "factory" in our house, it's our own fault. It will be almost impossible to specialize in "everything" and therefore it will be unneccessary to have spare chips laying around. While I'm in favor of smaller chips, I would much rather have a smaller GOOD chip that didn't have all the built-in video and sound additions to it. Sure I want color in my pda/cellphone and I want sound, but it's not neccessary for me to play EverQuest or Half-Life on this device when I'm board. And even if I could, I could handle not having high-res graphics on it... I can save that for the machine at home!
I'll agree. I'm one of the most right-wing baptist, "Bible-thumping" believers you'll find. God set certain laws in place on this earth. Just because man creates life from existing life doesn't mean he's "playing God". He is simply using the same principals that God set in motion on this earth to replicate. Furthermore, if you truly believe, as I do, that God created man in His own likeness then you'd realize that this includes the desire to "create". I believe if God didn't intend for this to happen, he would have made it impossible to do what we have thus far. Using science to prove creation is much better than placing science and God on opposite sides.
I watched a special on the history chan. dealing with mummification in egypt. The problem with trying to get DNA from mummies or other artifacts is that you only get about 150 unit chains at best. That is very small compared to what we can get from the living. I'm scared to think what animals we might have to execute because they "didn't turn out right". Bad/Old DNA will have to be researched more I feal.
