  1. *Lament* on Tom's Hardware benchmarks K6-3 and PIII · · Score: 1

Each time AMD releases something new I get worked up, hoping that finally they've got something that can compete with Intel. Each time however they always are shown to be six months behind at least. A few friends who are close to the K7 development have said it's a killer processor, but considering what Intel will have coming out at the same time, I have serious doubts about it being AMD's savior.

It seems they can't learn from their own mistakes. The biggest knock against AMD for a long time has been terrible floating point performance, yet they've never done anything about it. I wish they would just shake things up and break away from their apparent mindset of, "Intel is doing this in 6 months, we have to do it in 12 then," and do something completely different. If AMD ever wants to truly be taken seriously and end the constant talk of how this is the end, I don't see what else they can do.

  2. as lovely as this is... on Quake 3 article with Linux · · Score: 1

I'm not a Quake fan, mostly because it just seems kind of mindless, but I'll toss my support behind it and buy a copy. If it means we get more games that I really do like then it's worth the cost.

  3. It compiled! on Gnome 0.99.8 released · · Score: 1

Oh my god, someone mark this date as the first time in history someone other than the core developers managed to get gnome-libs & gnome-core to compile.

I hate to say it, but even though E is being promoted as the standard gnome wm, it works much better and is much faster with icewm.

  4. What exactly doesn't work? on Ask Slashdot: Upgrading Red Hat 5.2 to Linux 2.2.0 · · Score: 1

I'm using 5.1, and the only changes I made were the upgrade of net-tools and modutils. 2.2.1 is running smoothly so far.

  5. Could we please move on? on KDE 1.1 is out · · Score: 1

The Gnome/KDE flamewars are getting rather.. old. If you like Gnome, use that. If you like KDE, use that. If you don't like either, don't use either one. If your idea of a good time involves baiting people or using massive amounts of four letter words in the description of the one you don't like, get a life.

  6. You think so? on What do you Need to Start an ISP · · Score: 1

I'm just west of Minneapolis (~20 minutes), and we don't have DSL or cable currently available. It's not like no one lives out this way, the potential customer base is large enough for anyone who really wanted to get in on it here. I'd assume that this isn't unique to Minnesota, so when people say it's too late to start an isp they're not really looking at the big picture.

  7. Er.. on BeOS targeting Music Professionals · · Score: 1

First I heard Be was targetting the high-end graphics industry. Then I heard it was average joe user's desktop, and now it's the music sector. What's the deal, does anyone actually know what's going on over there?

You do realize that's the exact same thing people said about Linux until last year, right?

  9. KPPP Problems on The Road To Linux -- The Summit, but not the Peak · · Score: 1

The most likely cause of KPPP not working is the simple permission settings of pppd. By default Red Hat sets it so that only root can (or is supposed to) be the one to bring it up and down. All I had to do was change permission so my group could use it and everything worked peachy keen.

  10. Here's what I think.. on BellAtlantic ADSL absurdity · · Score: 1

I think Apple struck a deal with Bell Atlantic to only support the iMac, at least in the early stages. Kind of like how MS bought out ISP's Netscape contracts then paid them to use IE instead.

"Oh, you want to use this new ADSL? Well even though you just bough a new PPC, we only support the iMac. You'll have to go buy one of those now."

  11. Uh.. on Descent Into Linux (Part Two) · · Score: 1

I'm glad slashdot is trying to provide actual content, and sometimes this guy's articles are decent, but I've noticed a pattern. Each one seems to, at some point, go into this "geek outreach" mode, as if he's trying desperately to prove he's one of use too, whatever that means.
And doesn't anyone edit these things? The grammatical and structure errors are truly frightening. This is a good direction to go in, but it needs a ton of work and more thought put into it.

  12. Cool? on Cooler Cases · · Score: 1

After seeing the SGI boxes and the new G3 towers, these things look like garbage; just your average case with some colored plastic glued on.

  13. Well, I looked at it again on Linux.com Finally Has Content · · Score: 1

And I still hate it. I hardly ever post comments, but here I am posting to this for the second time just because I hate linux.com so much.

Having spent the better part of the last two years trying to prove to friends and people I work with Linux is for real, it's garbage like this that can undo all the work almost instantly. Linux is at a point where it needs to be promoted not only as tons of fun, but as a professional and personal solution for the proprietary garbage people have been fed for the last two decades.

Seeing FrontPage mentioned seriously offends me. M$ and what they stand for is the exact polar opposite of what Open Source projects like Linux stand for. Claiming the use of FP is necessary because the tools for creating sites under Linux essentially suck is not good promotion. If you can't do the job right, let someone who can do it for you.

  14. Does TSE count as this cyber terrorism? on Linux.com Finally Has Content · · Score: 1

Considering how cheap bandwidth is with various places that will host a site (like he.net), I don't know why they appear to be running it off a 386 over a 14.4 dialup. As for it being not so pretty, even the old linux.org site was infinitely better. I had to scroll three screens over to see the header text.

This is also a prime example of why frames have such a bad reputation. I've seen 12 y/o kids put together nicer junk over on geocities in their first attempt. At least the people behind linux.com managed to tile a background, sorta.

And what's the deal with using Microshaft FrontPage? That's not exactly the best way to promote Linux as an alternative, or at least I don't think it is.

  15. I don't really see an advantage on Corel Netwinder GS Available · · Score: 1

Thanks to a place called pricewatch, I can go build an x86 box with an amd running at 400mhz, four times the ram, and use scsi hardware for about $800 less. Not only that, but my box would end up being much more configurable. I'm all for being able to drop the server on to the network and just using it, but not at sacrificing all of that flexibility. The Netwinder is a good idea, and I'll probably get one just for vanity, but it just has too many design flaws to really be a great server. If they cut the prices and pushed Netwinder as more of a workstation they're probably sell a ton more.
