A bit OT, but BackupPC RULES! It has saved my ass more than a few times. Anyone with a 24x7 Linux server and a few GB of spare disk should be running it to backup all your other boxes, laptops, etc.

  2. Re:3D Sound? on Doom 3 Hardware Guide Debuts · · Score: 1

No shit, I am so sick of the state of the PC sound world these days... The Dolby Content Encoder you need to output real-time DD over SPDIF is only available on nForce *motherboards*. Hello??? This should be standard on every soundcard too. Dolby Digital is actually an open spec (A52) and there are open source encoders and decoders, so it should be possible to create a competing encoder product... maybe... although in the retail space they might get their ass sued off by Dolby.

I think whenever you see the term "5.1" used in the PC world, it generally always means analog 5.1 channel outputs. PC DVD players will convert DD/DTS into the analog outputs, or use SPDIF if you want, but I think all surround PC speaker systems use 5.1 analog connections. This is a bonus for high-res DVD audio where digital is banned, but kind of a pain for standard audio.

I think I will stick with some good headphones for a while.

I wonder why they didn't include HomePlug support, (ethernet over the power lines in your house). It's slow (I get about 3mbit between opposite sides of my house) but more than enough for media files.

Since this thing doubles as a wall wart and powerline ethernet requires a direct plug connection without a power strip, it should have been a no-brainer to include.

Heh, just the other day I was hacking a Perl script while playing with my 9 month old son on the floor. Wireless laptops are great. ;) It can be done, just don't burn yourself out on coding. Make sure your employer knows you only want to work a normal 40 hour week, and if you do any side coding on your own time (open source, contract, etc), make sure your wife knows what the deal is and understands why you're spending time doing that. It helps if the coding brings in much-needed extra money, but I still manage to find time for open source.

I also find nothing puts a baby to sleep better than laying on your lap while you are typing away on the keyboard. Well... when he's too tired to bang as hard as he can on the keys that is. :)

  8. IMO, don't bother on Home Theater Keyboards? · · Score: 1

I bought a Logitech bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and while they work great 15 feet away on my couch, they are simply too big and bulky to be practical. They are basically gathering dust. I now control everything on my HTPC via the wonderful MX-500 remote. I originally intended to play some games on my HTPC+HDTV but it's just too hard to play decently on a couch with a keyboard on your lap. Nowadays I mainly use the box for mp3's, video (TV episodes and the like), and emulators using Xbox controllers. When I bust out the emulators I tend to just control the box using VNC from a laptop rather than get out the keyboard and mouse.

So bottom line, think long and hard about whether or not you'll really use it. A good bluetooth setup isn't cheap so be sure it's worth it.

You could tunnel all of your internet traffic through a proxy server over an SSH connection. If you got busted you could quickly delete the private key so there is no way to recover the encrypted data. You could setup a telephone interface to do this so you could delete the file from jail in case you didn't have enough time previously. Would this classify as tampering with evidence? Probably, but that's gotta be a lesser charge than child porn or whatever else you are trying to keep them from seeing.

My local grocery store Giant Eagle tried this out a year and a half ago. They offered a free trial for something like 3 or 6 months, where there was no delivery fee. I used it weekly and it was great!! Then they discontinued the service because I guess not enough people were willing to pay the $9.95 delivery fee. I was shopping weekly at the time so I wasn't going to spend $40/month on delivery. I suggested they should start offering a $4.95 service where they would shop for you and you could pick up the bags at the store, but that never happened.

Now it's gone, and now I shop every 2 weeks buying a lot more stuff each time, so it might be worth the money now, but I'm out of luck. :(

ext3 does NOT journal data by default, it only "orders" it (data=ordered). This is still better than what any of the other filesystems do. You have to explicity define data=journal in fstab to get full data journaling. There is a performance hit but it's what I use on all my RAID5 data filesystems and it's great. I used to use reiserfs until a huge crash corrupted massive amounts of files and directories. I don't think I'll be going without data journaling protection for a while.

The only issue ever has been the XPSP1 initial corp key which was easily fixed by changing your key. Nowadays everyone uses the 6-in-1 or 8-in-1 CDs that include all versions (MSDN, Pro, Home, etc) and one even includes Partition Magic on the bootable CD, how's that for the best damn feature ever! Never had an issue at all.. MS doesn't care about the pirates, it builds mindshare and they know if they made things too difficult there would be that much more incentive for everyone to switch to Linux.
