If publishers are really contributing nothing to academic publishing, and just charge high prices and force you to sign away your rights (which I think is a fair characterization), here's a crazy idea: stop publishing through them! In other words if you resarch and make dicoveries for 100 "units of work" and manage to get only 10 published then your measured value is the same as the guy who made 10 units and made that 10 published.

And that's because most people feel a sudden relief by dumping the Registry, Spyware, Patch Floodings, WGA Crap and several other annoyances that come bundled with XP. Let alone the crapware that most of the delaers install on any new machine. (For instance my previous laptop was crapped to death with norton AV and custom device drivers - and I still feel a bit unsure when dualbooting XP on the new macbook)

4) Be limited to use only a specific brand of nails - In case this is overturned by a clever hacker all the nails can cease to work (see playsforsure against old MS DRM)
5) whatever else limiting to you but more profitable to them
6) Get sued if you lent/use a hammer from another person
7) Pay for a hammer that can be used to build 10 houses - Ops, sorry, after the sale terms are changes: only 7 houses (Apple FairPlay Cd burning)
From my humble point of view as noone would use such a tool . Conclusions: those corporations have been looking actively for extincion and fully deserve it.
