  1. When you set an iPhone unlock code, you have an option for "Custom Alphanumeric Code", "Custom Numeric Code" and "4-Digit Numeric Code". Which of these you choose probably makes a big difference to how many passwords are possible.

Apple made their bed when they advertised the iPhone as a way to defeat the police.

I guess that's one way of looking at it. Myself, I saw it more as Apple saying "here's a big lock you can use to keep your private information private from everyone*". Judging by how the market has acted since, I'd say the people have given their approval.

    * No, you can't just let the good guys in, it doesn't work that way. Either there's a screen door on the submarine or there isn't.

I'm the only person I've ever met who has more than a 4 digit code to unlock my phone, and I don't even have anything to hide!

Well, yeah, but that's not what they're doing. They're trying to brute force the unlock code, which without this software will wipe the phone after 10 failed unlock attempts. If the guy only has a 4 digit code, this will take considerably less than "hundreds of billions of years", or even (probably) the time it would take to get coffee.

Interesting but flawed analogy. While a road exists only in one country at a time for a given location, a site on the internet "exists" in as many countries that have a connection to the 'net. To refine your analogy to conform to this situation, suddenly the road exists in all countries at once. How do you propose to legally (everywhere) drive on both sides of the road at the same time?

I feel like I'm feeding a troll here but I need to say... Should this guy turn out to be your boss (or future potential boss), loan officer etc., your sanctimonious judgement of other people will probably not win you any brownie points. Ideally people should always stop in time for a red light and police should always act reasonably towards the people they are there to protect. Unfortunately we do not live in an ideal world (shocker, I know). People occasionally run red lights and cops sometimes abuse people.

In our society, it's vitally important that ignorance gets exposed in public. This includes people saying ignorant things you don't agree with. Fortunately, you can avail yourself of the very same public forums to espouse your own views in opposition. As soon as we have people deciding who can talk in public and who can't, we've lost something important. We have employed censors. If we can bring the stupid to light, we get a situation like the Westboro Baptist Church. They still get to shout their message from the rooftops and they earn all the derision they receive.
