I also have an Geforce 4. Its a Geforce 4 MX 420, a very old model. But its still working and I'm happy with it. There's only one bug working with Beryl. Nvidia told me that they are on the way for a solution.
Why I'm responsing is to inform you that it is possible, even with an old Geforce 4 to get the new kernel. All you have to do is to install the Nvidia Legacy Driver. They are still supported and updated, just not as frequently as the normal driver.
You can get the legacy driver here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-9639.html
Good luck with them!
Acutally the 'sometimes' is correct. I'm able to run windows-only applications (including games) without tweaking wine for it. Of course there are things where you have to tweak wine a bit, but fortunately many applications work "out of the box".
But despite of that I think its better for linux newbies to get common to native linux applications. Because most of the time they are better anyway:)
It's the same here in Germany. I'm using Pidgin with ICQ, AIM, YIM and MSN but almost ALL of my german contacts only have ICQ. Also if you ask someone if they have a IM address its most probably ICQ.
I also know many people from the Netherlands and it seems to me that most people there (if not all;)) use MSN. In the USA I think AIM is the number 1, but in this case I may be wrong.
So the kind of IM service people use really has to be somehow regionally.
Actually I'm also using a proxy but I don't have to tell Pidgin anything about it. On the Network tab of the preferences I've selected the following:
STUN server: [none]
Autodetect IP address: [checked]
Manuall specify range of ports to listen on: [unchecked] you have to open / tunnel all the ports for the protocols you're using.
Proxy type: [No proxy]
Hope that helps.
It does not have to do anything with licensing things. They removed the icons for each protocol because the developer thing that it actually is not important to see which user uses which protocol. The only thing which matters is to chat with them. But you can still see the protocol icon if you hover the buddy.
I think this is definitively a step back, but on the other hand I don't care too much for the icons. At least it looks better now.
Software is absolutely not a problem for Linux of MacOS. The onliest problem are games, which also is the most important reason that there are still so many people using windows. Many of my friends would have switched to linux if all the windows games would be run on linux. But I got all the games Im interested in running on linux so I dont have a problem with any kind of software.
Oh, yeah.... Finally we got ALSA support. Thats so cool.
In the past I'd never been able to have sound with any Flash-Media. If I wanted to get sound I always needed to restart my firefox (with some hundreds of open windows) and shut down all my other sound applications before. The aoss trick hasnt worked for me so its so cool to have ALSA support now... Now I'm able to access sites like youtube.com and myspace.com without having any troubles...
Thanks Adobe for releasing this version...

Nice image, but I like this one even more.
Correct... but the point is that all other areas are very well covered by linux application. There's just a lack of games.
