Not quite true on the Paramedic statement. Most paramedics operate on what is called Standing Orders or protocol. The doctor who is supervising the paramedic program in your area is tasked with creating a standard response to most types of calls that will be encountered in the field. As long as the paramedic stays within this protocol they are allowed to start IV's and administer drugs all without contacting medical control.
Even EMT-I (Intermediates) are allowed to administer certain drugs without any direction from medical control as it has already been spelled out in the Standing Orders.

Now if this drug proved to be useful and was added by the doctor overseeing the paramedic program then a paramedic could administer this drug in the field for a suspected spinal injury without medical control intervention.

Funny because I am a 36 year old COBOL developer and we have no gray beards on my team. We have close to fifteen COBOL developers and none of them are older than 50, with a median age of 34 between the group.

Also I have worked with a few gray beards in my time and I have found them to by polite and very knowledgeable. Some of which could write CICS programs that do more unique display routines than some of your current gui's.

If someone is truly interested in getting into COBOL for the first time your best bet is to find a company that will offer to train you. Most companies are realizing that developing the talent local and keeping things in house is actually cheaper than out sourcing as they will be able to retain the talent once the project is up and running and have an in house staff for support.

Another avenue might be to start inquiring with some of the major contracting companies, as they provide a large part of the workforce for open COBOL positions. Some of them have their own training programs.

  5. I am happy on Why COBOL Could Come Back · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am so glad that COBOL is not a sexy language. Why? Because it keeps the majority of coders out and keeps the need for developers at a high premium. This allows those of us that know COBOL and actually enjoy coding it to laugh all the way to the bank.

I have been coding COBOL/DB2 for ten years now and have never once felt that I could not get another job doing the same thing making the same or more money.

You can make the statement that COBOL is a dead language all you want but banks, insurance companies, telecoms, energy companies, etc. will continue to use and develop new project around COBOL because "no one has ever been fired for going blue".

You go ahead and continue to develop your little web apps and I will know I have a stable job out look for the next 30 years.

I would have to respectfully disagree with you here. I could not afford to go to college and at the time I graduated from HS had no intentions of going to college. I just hated the acedemic lifestyle.

I joined the military and served 8 years.

I would take just about any 22 year old with four years of experience from the military over a 22 year old that just graduated from college. There is alot to say for experience.

Also when I left the military it was for a job at a big bank. They hired me not because of some degree or even a cert but because of the job experience that I had.

Now grant it I was in a unique situation where the bank hired me to go into an "Academy" program where they basically trained a class of people, mostly new college grads, a few military folks, and a couple of retreads from other careers to become technical and business analysts. This was done to see if they could lower the turnover rate.
After 6 months of training I started working in a group coding COBOL, DB2, and the like on the mainframe. In the past 5 years at the bank I have never once felt worried about layoffs.

I guess the moral of my long winded rant is that college is not the end all be all that everyone likes to make it out to be.

To add to the usefulness of VR, it does have some very good uses. I saw a show the other day on the Dicovery Channel talking about Zoophobia (fear of animals). And how one group was using VR to desensitize the patient to the encounter of spiders. Before the desensitizing the patient could not get closer than 6' from a spider without feeling major anxiety. But after a several hour session of VR where the patient would first push the VR spider into a sink and wash them down the drain to finally touching a fake spider that was hooked into the VR world and actually hold it and inspect it. After the 2 hour session the patient was actually able to touch a real spider and has not had a bout of Zoophobia since.

Also the Government uses VR to build there ships in VR from the ground up to include every single nut and bolt to make sure that the design is viable. Hopefully John can bring this technology into the everyday usage. With someone with this much knowledge and clout if anyone can do it I believe John can.

Well I work for Bank Of America on the mainframe side of the shop and IBM already has Unix(AIX) running on S/390. It is called Unix System Services. You are right about it running in a virtual environment. As a matter of fact they(IBM) have already got Apache running in this environment. Their goal is to eventually get the Lotus Domino servers running in this environment also. We are in the process of setting up a all java based reporting system that will have live real time acess and update capability to DB2. The reasoning behind the use of a machine like the mainframe is the fact we will have up to 100,000 people acessing dynamically created reports all delivered through the corporate intranet to the banking centers. Especially with the new JDBC drivers that DB2 is now supporting it really runs smoothly. I even talked to some of the IBM reps who said to most software it looks just like they are running on AIX and then the Unix System Services make the apropriate calls to S/390. I guess my real question would be why would IBM want to port Linux for the mainframe when they already have AIX running smoothly there?? Can anyone tell me what you gain from running Linux instead of Unix???? Just my two cents on the subject.
