    You should check out rdiff backup. It's really nice for server to server harddisk backups. Don't know if it works with windows though.

    You are probably right about bash being non standard but if you need bash for a script just install bash. It's free software and most probably supported on your platform of choice.

    It's not like a vendor lock in or anything like that.

    You don't really need the install cd to install gentoo. Any CD distro like knoppix work just as well.

    Don't believe Apple. They tell you anything to sell a computer. It's not a UNIX either, you have to be certified to be a UNIX. Something Apple never got around to, maybe because they are not compatible enough.

    It is also a good place to start if you want more graphics in a gentoo install. Knoppix sometimes find hardware better then the gentoo install CD and it has all that is needed to install it. Which of course is basically nothing if you have a net connection.

    In a standard pc if a part fail I can go out and buy that part for 100$ max, any part. I will go so far as to say I don't need no warranty because parts are so cheap and easy to install.

    If the mb on your sweet mac goes out you probably can't even buy it without shipping your computer to Apple. Sound like shit to me.

    The patent doesn't cover *mouse* clicks. It covers a way to get at least 3 different actions from the "application buttons" on your PDA --- short click, long click, and double-click.

    As it is you can pretty much ignore the one of them you don't like. If you run Gnome or kde booth ways works pretty well.

    Or you can see the X way as the "Quick'n dirty" copy and paste and the Gnome/KDE as the more solid.

    Another way is to place the cursor in the addressbar and press ctrl+u to delete whats there. Press middle to paste in. This works on most textinputs. Gtk and QT too I think.

    Sun invents standards such as NFS you know, and then share the speces with the rest of the world. Apple invents obscure quicktime formats and sues anyone who tries to use their DRM.

    Sun have given openoffice to the community, Apple gives a kernel nobody gives a shit about.

    Yeah. Apple is the pro opensource/pro standards of the two companies. It sounds more to me like a freerider on the open source wave.

    You make it sound like wine doesn't work today. It runs office if you want to, but why bother when it also runs star wars kotor (winex). It's not vaporware anymore.

    It's a fast cpu-emulator with JIT compilation and such. About 100 times faster than bochs.

    As you probably know with Q3 you could by the cheaper windows version and download Linux binaries. I'm pretty sure Carmack understands that too. Not to mention it was quite a while since Q3 was released, the market has hopefully grown a bit.
