  1. Re:raspberry for chinese boards on Inside the Raspberry Pi Factory · · Score: 1

I just hopped onto the Raspberry Pi bandwagon. I received two boards over the weekend (made in China) and both can't keep the USB/Ethernet on... I'm the last post in the parent's link.... It's very frustrating (even for an experience electrical and computer engineer) and I hope that they can get their quality control under ... control. I'd hate to see something as awesome as the Raspberry Pi ruined during it's early life because of poor hardware manufacturing. Without RTFA, I expect this recent post is to get some good PR out about the recent glut of defective boards.

But what about the price performance? These devices are all priced at the same level or even above than the iPad. All things being equal, the larger market of the has a network effort bonus that maks the iPad appear more valuable. Even the summary states these tablets are, "every bit as capable", in the technology sense, meaning the tech between the two is basically even. Once these Android tablets can offer a device cheaper than an iPad, then we can talk about serious competition.

The 0s and 1s are still distinguishable because HDMI uses transition minimized differential signaling (TMDS). Basically, noise is picked up on all the wires and therefore can be ignored.

Basically, it's using a form of Low-Voltage Differential Signaling

For example the xbox SDK was only available to elite developers. XBMC is an awesome program that has been forced into the underground because they are not an official SDK developer, even though their product is IMHO way better then anything Microsoft sanctions.
Same thing happened to Nintendo in the 80's.

But the XBOX is my device and I can do what I want with it, but Microsoft isn't going to support it. Java, Firefox, and Skype can all be ported to the iphone (anyone heard of Installer.app), it just won't be supported through their software distribution channel. While I think it's a shame, it's their right.

Finally for those who say they can't hack this device, they certainly haven't tried. (IRC anyone?)

Oh and if Apple's TOS say it's illegal for me to run a ported Java, they can try and stop me, right after they pry the phone from my cold, dead, body.

  15. Re:Maybe use block frequency converters? on The Journey of Radios From Hardware to Software · · Score: 1

The problem with block downcoverters is that that is not truly a software radio and limits flexibility immediately, by reducing the spectrum available. This is the limiting factor of an modern day SDR system. Without the block downcoverters though it's hard to keep unwanted signals out (CDMA with a higher signal power then WiFi for example). But with modern day hardware and signal processing capabilities a novel prefilter can be designed, say with 20MHz tuning blocks that are to be completely digitized by an ADC (at a reasonable amount of power, say 10uW).

You wouldn't be able to get that from reading the Popular Science article, but check out the website for BMS (http://www.biomimetic-systems.com/, check under technology). It has to do with the fact that it uses a biomedical approach unlike conventional devices of this type. Those devices, like you said work well in a laboratory environment but fail miserably once you remove them their happy place!
